PURDUE UNIVERSITY
Project Summary
• Development of management tools for the ReStore to increase efficiency
• Design of a software tracking system for the ReStore product inventory
PURDUE UNIVERSITY
Semester Tasks
• Design and Implement a bar coding system
• Update User Interface• Update and revise User’s Manual• Compile and catalog an inventory of
items at the ReStore– To be completed in the Spring Semester
PURDUE UNIVERSITY
Barcoding System
• Barcode scanner– Quick access to item Product ID through
barcode– Easy access and management of item record in
inventory database
• Barcode printer– Allows labeling of store products– Initially purchased printer needed replacement– Newly purchased printer to be installed in the
Spring Semester
PURDUE UNIVERSITY
User Interface
• Barcoding Functions– Scanner input fields– Barcode printing software
• Software Improvements– Recommendations from ReStore staff– Simple search functionality– Improved speed and code efficiency
PURDUE UNIVERSITY
Next Steps
• Testing of new barcode printer• Final delivery review for system• Compile inventory of ReSale store items
PURDUE UNIVERSITY
Project Summary
• There is no concrete way, currently, to show the benefits of the Habitat program to the community, both locally and nationally.
• Grants are given based on ability to show standard of living improvements, so HFHI needs a way to show how they help improve homeowner quality of life.
PURDUE UNIVERSITY
Semester Tasks
• Create a centralized database on a secure server
• The web-based program will consist of three main parts:
• A Survey Generator • Homeowner Response Collection\Input• Statistical Analysis
PURDUE UNIVERSITY
Technical Solution
• The current program relies on a single main database to hold the surveys, responses, and a list of questions and answers.
• HFHI standards are to use Microsoft products and HFHI’s current databases are created with Microsoft Access; following their standards we are also calling the queries with SQL statements.
PURDUE UNIVERSITY
Create Survey (1)
Affiliates send paper copy to the homeowners through
regular mail
Homeowner fills
out survey (paper form) (2)
Homeowners send paper copy to the affiliates through regular mail
Affiliates enter homeowner responses
into the secure Database
(web-based) (3)
Changes m
ade to the database are logged
and saved.
National, State, & Local levels each can uses the
statistical analysis tools to show “Standard of Living” changes (4)
Basic Process
Main DatabaseHere is a look at each of the 5 tables in the database*note these are filled with example data
(above) Table used to record answers for statistical analysis
(above) Table used to record surveys for unique survey forms that can be used
multiple times
(above) Table used to record questions and answers for use in creating surveys
(below) Example of a created survey that has been saved for later use
PURDUE UNIVERSITY
User can pick to create a new survey or to select a previously created survey.
Drop down list of previously create surveys.
Selecting a survey and clicking edit brings you to this screen which allows the user to modify or delete questions already in the survey, or add a new survey to the survey.

PURDUE UNIVERSITY
If a survey is selected and the fill button chosen, this is the screen that the user is brought to. It shows all the questions and answers that are on that survey.

This is the confirmation screen after the responses are recorded in database.

PURDUE UNIVERSITY
Project Summary
• Design and implement – National scale multimedia tools to enhance
construction proficiency of volunteers– Database that organizes Habitat’s large amount of
information into an easier, more maintainable format.
• Create a set of standards and specifications for the presentation of the construction tutorial tools
• Develop a template for future additions to construction tutorial
PURDUE UNIVERSITY
Semester Tasks
• Climate Zone Database– Working prototype.– Getting feedback.
• Construction Tutorials– Framing and siding completed.– Getting feedback on volunteer “quick
reference” cards. (Madison, WI – EPICS team)
PURDUE UNIVERSITY
Climate Zone Database
• Allows a user to access vast amount of information, but only see what information pertains to their particular climate zone.
• Organizes HFHI’s massive amount of information into a central location.
PURDUE UNIVERSITY
Types of Tutorials
• Wall Tutorial– Outlines how to create walls and put them in place– Includes info on creating door and window openings
• Flooring Tutorial– Outlines sub-floor placement
• Multimedia– Framing video
• Copyrights currently in process
– Pictures• Necessary pictures are placed within the tutorials for
further explanation
