DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL OF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
Winstone is a 2-1/2 story frame and stone Queen Anne style house built in 1885 and located on the north side of Trappe Church Road southwest of the intersection of Trappe Church Road and Darlington Road (Md. Route 161) near Darlington, Harford County, Maryland.
The house is typical of the Queen Anne style in its irregular massing and variety of window treatments, decorative trim and exterior wall coverings. The main elevation faces south toward a panoramic view of the Deer Creek valley. A porte-cochere with stone arches dominates the facade. A polygonal bay-windowed dormer projects from the pitched roof of the porte-cochere. A projecting bay window on the ground floor is topped by a balustraded porch on the second floor. At the third floor level, two large projecting dormers jut out over the lower floor, supported in part by a large carved stone bracket at the southwest corner. The dormers have shingled faces and paired windows. Each dormer has different carved wood trim.
The west elevation has a screened porch extending across the entire facade and around the corner of the house onto the north elevation. An exterior stone and brick chimney is enclosed by the porch. French doors flank the chimney. Single windows are on the second floor and paired windows with paneled and balustraded trim are on the top floor.
The north or rear elevation has the greatest variety of window styles and arrangement. The first floor has a bay window projecting onto the porch. A polygonal cormer similar to that Oil the south elevation projects from the roof on the third floor level. A second shed type dormer appears to be original, but the windows are proba1;ly modern replacements. At the northeast corner of the house is a one story shingled wing containing the kitchen and service area.s.
The east elevation has further window styles on two gabled projections. A second exterior chimney rises from one projection. A third chimney is located near the center of the house.
The unified architectural design is enhanced by the repetition of some ornamental details on both the interior and exterior. A stylized sunburst motif of terra cotta tiles set into the brick chimneys is repeated in the carved door frames of the first floor rooms. The interior woodwork of most of the house shows a high level of craftsmanship. The dining room has a high paneled wainscot with a plate rail. The ceiling has an overlay wood grid of Jacobean-style strapwork. The living room ceiling also has strapwork surrounding a plain central panel. The main stair hall gives access to all the first floor rooms and has a large fireplace with a field of fleur-de-lys on the surround. The stair rises to a spacious landing with bookshelves along the wall for a reading nook backed by a series of casement windows.
The current owner of the house has the original working plans and detail sheets dated 1885. These sheets show that there have been few major alterations CONTINUE ON SEPARATE SHEET IF NECESSARY

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Winstone is an excellent example of the Queen Anne architectural style. This is one of at least five or six houses in the Darlington area designed by or attributed to the Philadelphia firm of Cope and Stewardson, an important and distinguished team working in the late 19th century. The other known Cope and Stewardson houses in the area are: Grace Memorial Church Rectory (HA-79), Red Gate (HA-208), Grey Gables (HA-310), Roscrea (HA-311), and Westacre (HA-322).
The firm (Walter Cope and John and Efllyn Stewardson) gained a nationwide reputation for their work in the collegiate Gothic style for Princeton University and Bryn Hawr College. Their finest work is considered by many to be Brookings Hall at Washington University in St. Louis. This building was used as the Administration Building of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904. Cope also designed the 1908 Municipal Building (later named the District Building) in Washington, D.C.
Daniel Clark Wharton Smith was a Philadelphia''doctor \lho apparehtly built Winstone as a summer estate and later retired there.
Note: This form consolidates original survey number HA-324 (Coachman's House).

in the house since its construction. One significant change is the replacement of the many original stained glass windows. The owner also has a chain of title researched and bound in the 1890's which details the original 1683 tract of Elberton from which Winstone was subdivided. A landscaping plan and some late 19th or early 20th century photographs of the house are also retained by the owners.
Fifty feet northeast of the house is a stone guest house with a gazebo entrance on its southwest corner. The house is basically a rectangle with a single room with a fireplace on the ground floor and one room on the second floor. Like the main house, the guest house has a variety of window treatments, including a two-sided oriel window on the west elevation. At the north end of the guest house is a square shingled tower which once supported a windmill. Facing the guest house across a small courtyard is the stable which has a stone base and a shingled frame upper structure. At the southwest corner is a turret corresponding in general outline and location with the gazebo porch of the guest house. The stable and guest house are connected on the north by a concrete block garage extension. A frame barn is located about 75 yards west of the guest house.
