Whatʼs an Accounting Technician?

Accounting technicians are highly skilled accounting staff and are widelyemployed throughout the public sector, industry and commerce and inprivate accountancy practices.

They are involved in the day-to-day practical work of accountancy includingthe preparation of financial information and accounts, and can work on theirown or alongside professional accountants.

Accounting technicians can play a wide range of roles in any organisation, from Assistant Accountant to Office Manager to Financial Controller. Forinstance, they might do financial accounting and calculate sales profits, stock value, wages and salaries. They may also carry out auditing, checkfinancial records, examine expenses and look at tax returns.

Who are IATI?

The Institute of Accounting Technicians in Ireland (IATI) is the leading accountingtechnician body in Ireland with over 10,000 members and students.

Established in 1983, IATI prides itself on providing an internationally recognisedbusiness qualification and on promoting the highest educational, technical andethical standards to its members.

The IATI qualification differs from many other academic programmes as itcombines professional exams with practical work experience. As members of theInstitute, individuals are entitled to put the letters MIATI after their name, seen bymany employers as essential when hiring.

IATI is a partner body with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland and anassociate member of the International Federation of Accountants. It has offices inDublin and Belfast and links with local networks throughout Ireland.

Why would I be interested?

Accounting technicians enjoy excellent career prospects and there isalways a strong demand for their skills in the marketplace.

They can work in a wide variety of finance roles for many types oforganisations, including manufacturing companies, local and centralgovernment, the health service, banks and insurance companies andprivate accountancy firms. Self-employment is also a possibility forqualified technicians.

In addition, many who qualify as accounting technicians go on to continuetheir studies, using their qualification as a stepping stone to eventuallybecoming professional accountants and members of one of the senioraccounting bodies.

Who studies to be an Accounting Technician?

IATI students come from all walks of life. For example, you may already be workingor going to college, or perhaps you are a mature student who wants to get backinto the workforce. You could even be currently working in an accounting relatedarea, and although experienced, wish to pursue a formal qualification.

Can you tell me about the IATI qualification?

The IATI Accounting Technician qualification consists of two elements, which canbe completed simultaneously or at different phases:

• Two years study course• Two years relevant work experience

Depending on your circumstances, the qualification can be studied full-time, part-time or on a correspondence basis, allowing students to study at a pace that fitstheir lives.

How do I become an Accounting Technician?

“Students come from all walks of life.”

Page 7: h

Full-timeFull-time courses are available in a wide number of colleges aimed at studentswho want to devote themselves full-time to preparing for the IATI qualification.Typically speaking, these courses are usually run over four days.

Part-timeIf you want to study part-time, there are many courses available. Thesenormally involve evening lectures twice a week, although some colleges willdeliver day-time options for part-time students.

CorrespondenceIf itʼs not convenient to attend a lecture-based course, you can enrol as acorrespondence student. This way you can study from home usingtutorial materials.

Obviously, these course options have different time commitments and thus willimpact your availability for gaining work experience - assuming you do notalready have the required two years experience.

For instance, students choosing to study part-time or on a correspondence basiscan opt to work during the day while they are studying at night, and gain valuableexperience towards their qualification. For those studying full-time, it will take alittle longer to gain the required work experience and qualify.
