111! ?$ST2s?P F E D E R A L R E S E R V E statistical release For immediate release April 24, 1963 H.4.2 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BAMS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended April 17: Increases of $317 million in loans adjusted, $598 million in holdings of U. S. Government securities, $338 million in holdings of "other" securities, $1,254 million in demand deposits adjusted, and a decrease of $98 million in time and savings deposits. Commercial and industrial loans increased in eight districts and a net of $4 million; during the comparable week a year ago these loans increased $17 million. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U. S. Government securities increased $87 million, and their loans for purchasing or carrying "other" securities increased $18 million. Loans to sales and personal financing institutions decreased $4l million and loans to "other" nonbank financial institutions increased $30 million, as compared with increases of $56 million and $36 million, respectively, during the similar week in 1962. Real estate loans increased $67 million. "Other" loans increased $133 million. Holdings of Treasury bills by weekly reporting member banks increased $573 million, Treasury certificates increased $l4 million, and the combined t o t a l of Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds increased $11 million. Demand deposits adjusted increased in all but one district and included increases of $536 million i n t h e New York District, $168 million in the Chicago District, $163 million in the San Francisco District, $159 million in the Cleveland District and by lesser amounts in seven other districts. Savings deposits decreased $144 million and "other" time deposits of individuals, partnerships, and corporations decreased $59 million. Borrowings of weekly reporting member banks from Federal Reserve Banks decreased $236 million but borrowings from others increased $150 million.     $573 m i l l i o n , Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s increased $ l4 m i l l i o n , and t h e combined t o t a l

    of Treasury notes and U. S . Government bonds inc reased $11 m i l l i o n .
