FEDERAL RESERVE II.4.2 statistical release For immediate release June 20, 1962 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended June 13: Increases of $398 million in loans adjusted, $437 million in holdings of "other" securities, and $1,265 million in demand deposits adjusted and a decrease of $593 million in U. S. Government demand deposits. Commercial and industrial loans increased in all but one district and a net of $103 million; during the week ended June 14, 1961, these loans increased $358 million partially reflecting quarterly tax data needs. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U. S. Government securities increased $214 million, but their loans for purchasing or carrying "other" securities decreased $82 million. Loans to sales and personal financing institutions decreased $6 million and loans to "other" nonbanlt financial institutions increased $51 million, as compared with increases of $57 million and $40 million, respectively, during the week ended June 14, I961. Real estate loans increased $77 million. "Other" loans increased $43 million. Holdings of Treasury bills by weekly reporting member banks increased by $85 million] and the combined t o t a l of Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds decreased by $93 million. Holdings of "other" securities increased $216 million in New York City, $82 million in the City of Chicago, $32 million in the San Francisco District, $30 million in the St. Louis District and by smaller amounts in all but one other district. Demand deposits adjusted increased $526 million i n New York City, $149 million in the Cleveland District, $109 million in the Chicago District, and by lesser amounts in all other districts. Savings deposits increased $92 million and "other" time deposits of individuals, partnerships, and corporations increased $108 million of which $90 million was in the New York District. Borrowings of weekly reporting member banks from Federal Reserve Banks increased $47 million and borrowings from others increased $318 million.     The condi t ion s ta tement of weekly r epo r t i ng member banks in l ead ing c i t i e s

    shows the fo l lowing p r i n c i p a l changes f o r the week ended June 13: Increases of

    t h e i r loans f o r purchas ing o r ca r ry ing "other" s e c u r i t i e s decreased $82 m i l l i o n .

    t o "o ther" nonbanlt f i n a n c i a l i n s t i t u t i o n s increased $51 m i l l i o n , as compared with

    inc reases of $57 m i l l i o n and $40 m i l l i o n , r e s p e c t i v e l y , dur ing the week ended

    June 14, I961. Real e s t a t e loans increased $77 m i l l i o n . "Other" loans increased

    $43 m i l l i o n .

    Holdings of Treasury b i l l s by weekly r epo r t i ng member banks increased by

    $85 m i l l i on ] and the combined t o t a l of Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds

    decreased by $93 m i l l i o n . Holdings of "other" s e c u r i t i e s i nc reased $216 m i l l i o n in
