FEDERAL RESERVE statistic on release For immediate release May 31, 1962 H.4.2 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BAMS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended May 23: Decreases of $710 million in loans adjusted; and increases of $195 million in holding of U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s and $200 million in demand deposits adjusted; and decreases of $204 million in U. S. Government demand deposits and $1,049 million in demand deposits credited to domestic commercial banks. Commercial and industrial loans decreased in all but two districts and a net of $145 million; during the comparable week a year ago, these loans decreased $297 million. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U. 8. Govern- ment securities decreased $556 million. Loans to sales and personal financing institutions decreased $72 million. Real estate loans increased $51 million. Holdings of Treasury bills by weekly reporting member banks increased $139 million, Treasury certificates decreased $24 million, and the combined total of Treasury notes and U . S . Government bonds increased $80 million. "other" securities increased $35 million. Demand deposits adjusted increased $54 million each in the Cleveland and Richmond D i s t r i c t s , $50 million in the Dallas District, $46 million in the New York D i s t r i c t , $43 million in the Chicago District, but they decreased $74 million in the San Francisco District, and $37 million in the Boston District. Savings deposits increased $90 million and "other" time deposits of individuals, partnerships, and corporations increased $109 million. Borrowings of weekly reporting member banks from Federal Reserve Banks decreased $130 million and borrowings from others decreased $66 million.
