FEDERAL RESERVE For immediate release April 11, 1962 H.4.2 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BAUKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended April 4: Decreases of $162 million in loans adjusted and $291 million in holdings of U. S. Government securities; increases of $111 million in holdings of "other" securities, $255 million in reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks, $1,183 million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks, and $177 million in time and savings deposits; and decreases of $156 million in demand deposits adjusted and $1,136 million in U. S. Government demand deposits. Commercial and industrial loans increased in eight districts and a net of $50 million; during the comparable week a year ago, these loans decreased $147 mil- lion. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U. S. Government securities decreased $256 million, but their loans for purchasing or carrying "other" securities increased $47 million. Loans to sales and personal financing insti- tutions decreased $42 million and loans to "other" nonbank financial institutions decreased $16 million, as compared with an increase of $60 million and a decrease of $64 million, respectively, during the similar week in 1961. Holdings of Treasury bills by weekly reporting member banks decreased $350 million, Treasury certificates decreased $26 million, and the combined t o t a l of Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds increased $85 million. Demand deposits adjusted decreased $128 million in the Dallas District and $124 million in the Chicago District, and by smaller amounts in six other dis- tricts, but they increased $228 million in the San Francisco District. Savings deposits increased $84 million and "other" time deposits of individuals, partner- ships, and corporations increased $83 million. Borrowings of weekly reporting member banks from Federal Reserve Banks decreased $83 million and borrowings from others decreased $79 million. Commercial and i n d u s t r i a l loans increased in e ight d i s t r i c t s and a net of

$50 mi l l ion ; during the comparable week a year ago, these loans decreased $147 mil-

l i o n . Loans t o brokers and dealers f o r purchasing or carrying U. S. Government

s e c u r i t i e s decreased $256 mi l l ion , but t h e i r loans f o r purchasing or carrying "other"

s e c u r i t i e s increased $47 m i l l i o n . Loans to sa les and personal f inancing i n s t i -

tu t ions decreased $42 mi l l ion and loans to "other" nonbank f i n a n c i a l i n s t i t u t i o n s

decreased $16 mi l l ion , as compared with an increase of $60 mi l l ion and a decrease of

$64 mi l l ion , r e spec t ive ly , during the s imi la r week in 1961.

Holdings of Treasury b i l l s by weekly repor t ing member banks decreased $350

mi l l ion , Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s decreased $26 mi l l ion , and the combined t o t a l of

Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds increased $85 m i l l i o n .

Demand deposi ts ad jus ted decreased $128 mi l l ion in the Dallas D i s t r i c t

and $124 mi l l ion in the Chicago D i s t r i c t , and by smaller amounts in s i x other d i s -

t r i c t s , but they increased $228 mi l l ion in the San Francisco D i s t r i c t . Savings

deposi ts increased $84 mi l l ion and "other" time deposi ts of ind iv idua l s , pa r tner -

ships , and corporat ions increased $83 m i l l i on .

Borrowings of weekly repor t ing member banks from Federal Reserve Banks

decreased $83 mi l l ion and borrowings from others decreased $79 m i l l i o n . Loans to

domestic commercial banks decreased $71 mi l l i on .
