deploy applications to meet their objectives today andeasily update or change applications and services as theirenterprise evolves.
For service providers and systems integrators, the MSRplatform and OAA enable innovative, differentiated servicesthat provide higher value to customers and increaseretention. For example, service providers can create andrapidly deploy services as well as customize their offeringto fulfill a customer’s unique mission-critical needs.
Examples of best-of-breed commercial, open source andH3C applications enabled through OAA include:
› enhanced security functionality to fortify anorganization’s multi-layered security strategy;
› network performance-enhancing WAN optimizationand application acceleration that give branch officeand remote employees faster and more reliable accessto the tools and information needed to be successful;and,
› monitoring and management applications to simplifynetwork deployment and management as well asprovide deep visibility in order to make informedbusiness decisions.
Converged Communications SupportIn addition to a comprehensive portfolio of voice gatewayinterfaces, MSR 50 Series routers deliver services up towire-speed T-3/E-3 rates. MSR 50 routers also offeroptional embedded Voice Processing Modules (VPM)and Voice Co-Processing Modules (VCPM), which enableadvanced voice processing for high-performance analogand digital voice services without compromisingperformance of the other modules or of the router.
The VCPM provides local Time Division Multiplexing (TDM)functions while the VPM serves as a Digital SignalProcessor (DSP) to support IP voice communication overthe network. Scalable voice configurations and higherline density are supported through the use of multipleVPMs, based on the number of voice lines required. VPMsand VCPMs reside on a centralized, embedded multi-service processor module, conserving router I/O slotsfor maximum port density and configuration flexibility.Fully-populated, an MSR 50 Series router canaccommodate as many as 480 digital voice channels.
Building on H3C's commitment to open standards, theMSR 50 Series portfolio supports common industry voiceprotocols including Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) andH.323.
Advanced Security and Control
To help protect sensitive information against unauthorizedaccess, MSR 50 Series routers integrate a number ofcompre hensive security services and accessmanagement capabilities, including:
› Hardware-based Standard Network Data Encryption(SNDE) and Advanced Network Data Encryption (ANDE)embedded via Enhanced Services Modules (ESM) slots;
› Progressive encryption methods such as DataEncryption Standard (DES) and 3DES;
› Additional security features such as advanced firewall,Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP), MPLS and IPSecVPNs. SSHv2 and Simple Network ManagementProtocol (SNMP)v3 protect router managementsessions.
As with the voice modules, ESM modules reside on acentralized multi-service processing module, conservingrouter I/O slots for maximum configuration flexibility,port density and routing performance.
Integrated and Flexible Services ArchitectureThe MSR 50-60 and MSR 50-40 are modular in designand deliver integrated, concurrent services on a singleplatform; this creates operational efficiencies, reducesa network's total cost of ownership and powerconsumption, and maximizes valuable rack space. Witha comprehensive set of integrated modules that delivervoice and data interfaces, and routing and switchingcapabilities, MSR 50 Series routers deliver thefunctionality of multiple devices and appliances in asingle platform.
OAA applications are directly integrated into the routerfabric to deliver deep monitoring capabilities andapplication functionality, as well as management via asingle interface.
High-Density Routing and SwitchingPerformanceWhen evaluating multi-service routers, performance,port density and configuration flexibility are all keyconsiderations. The MSR 50 Series portfoliooutperforms competing multi-service routers,delivering packet forwarding performance up to 600Kbps and encryption performance of up to 600 Mbps.
With a comprehensive portfolio of WAN and LAN interfacemodules, these routers deliver concurrent services upto T-3/E-3 rates, in addition to Fast Ethernet and Gigabit

Ethernet LAN connectivity. They also offer in-line Powerover Ethernet (PoE) to provision IP phones, wireless LAN(WLAN) access points and IP security cameras as part ofa unified branch office solution. Furthermore, FlexibleInterface Card (FIC) options include high-density Layer 2 10/100 Mbps Ethernet switching cards forintegrated switching and routing in a single platform tosimplify infrastructure deployments for branch andregional offices.
Resilience and Redundancy for MaximumUptimeMSR 50 Series routers are designed for the highestlevels of availability and resiliency to ensure continuousoperation and to meet the requirements of real-timeapplications such as as VoIP, and live or on-demand video.Hot-swappable modules and power supplies enable quickreplacements without network interruption. Additionalreliability capabilities include configuration rollback,Multilink PPP and Multilink Frame Relay and VirtualRouter Redundancy Protocol (VRRP).
Next-Generation Routing CapabilitiesThe evolution to next-generation networks based on IPv6 isimminent; however, organizations worldwide will followdifferent paths as they transition from today’s IPv4 networks.MSR 50 Series routers offer comprehensive IPv4 andIPv6 routing capabilities to accommodate a variety ofmigration approaches such as IPv4 “islands” on IPv6networks, IPv6 “islands” on IPv4 networks, and inter -connection (with protocol translation) of IPv6 and IPv4networks. This enables a wide array of network designpossibilities.
Through a powerful suite of MPLS features, includingMPLS TE (Traffic Engineering) and Fast Re-Route (FRR),this router portfolio maximizes the benefit of an MPLSbackbone to provide bandwidth optimization, strictquality of service (QoS) guarantees for the transport ofcritical traffic and the ability to quickly re-route trafficfollowing network failures.
Fully Featured Routing PlatformUnlike competitive offerings, MSR 50 Series routersfeature a complete routing and security suite, a robustapplication set and all required operating memory,eliminating the need for costly and inconvenientupgrades. Specifically, the MSR 50 Series portfolioincludes:
› Open, industry standards-based routing capabilitiessuch as: IP and IPX routing; Open Shortest Path First(OSPF), Routing Information Protocol (RIP)v1/2/3;integrated intermediate system to intermediatesystem (IS-IS); multicast routing; QoS; 802.1Q VLANs;and Internet Group Management Protocol(IGMP)v1/2/3;
› Built-in Flash memory and USB slots that holdmultiple configuration files and operating systems forrecovery purposes; and,
› A full complement of memory, including up to 1 Gb ofSDRAM and 256 Mb of Flash memory to support dualsoftware images.
Sophisticated ManagementNetwork infrastructure deployments and upgrades canbe costly and time-consuming for organizations withseveral branch offices or remote locations. The MSR 50router series offers an intuitive, easy-to-use command-line interface (CLI) function that can be securelyaccessed locally or remotely for comprehensiveconfiguration and management, and offers additionalfeatures that provide an extensive set of managementcapabilities.
For example, MSR 50 routers are compatible withindustry-standard NetFlow, an efficient and powerfultechnique for collecting IP traffic information, includinginformation about network users and applications, peakusage times, and traffic volumes. The MSR 50 Series isalso fully manageable via H3C intelligent ManagementCenter (IMC), which provides unified, modular device,user and service management.
