    Providing a consistent experience

across all customer touch points is

    critical to maintaining trust.

An era where 60 percent of the worlds

population has a mobile phone presents

both opportunities and challenges to the

nancial services industry. People now expect

to be provided with anywhere, anytime

access to information that transcends their

professional and personal lives as well as the

means to act on it. Banks and other nancial

    institutions can seize this opportunity

to transform the way they interact with

customers. But how you implement mobile

solutions is critical to maintaining the trust

that is the heart of the nancial services

    industry. Mobility enables several key

    nancial sectors to provide new

    customer services:

Banks move up the value chain with mobile

    payment solutions.

Merchants send discount oers directly to

credit card holders based on GPS location.

    Insurance companies enable people to

assess damages and le claims directly

from the crash site with a simple scan of

    the vehicle identication number.

Customers deposit checks and pay their bills

    directly from their mobile device.

    Financial analysts help customers manage

portfolios and create wealth with anywhere-

    access to investment information.

Read on to learn how The HP integrated

mobile solutions can help you transform your

    customers nancial services experience to

drive new revenue, higher protability and

    greater competitiveness.

Secure, high-qualitymobile bankingexperiencesMobility is becoming part of daily

life for everyone in the world asbillions of people rapidly embrace

the use of mobile devices. In fact,

research from World Bank cites that

75 percent of the worlds population

    have subscribed to mobile phones1.

    Although the remaining 25 percent

may not own a mobile phone, theyprobably have easy access to one.

Mobile devices are becoming the most

accessible way to connect and conduct business

with anyone and any business, anywhere. As

ownership of mobile devices becomes more

    common and application downloads skyrocket,

lives and lifestyles are rapidly changing. New

forms of access to healthcare, mobile shopping,

and nancial services are transforming how we

interact with customers. Simply stated, mobile

devices are creating a better life experience in

    both developed and developing countries.

For IT leadership in the nancial services

industry, this presents an incredibleopportunity as well as potential disruption to

    infrastructures and business models. There

will be enormous innovation in this space that

will be a key battleground for all nancial

institutions. The primary advantage is, of

course, that you can reach anyone, anytime,

anywhere. Mobile devices enable new types of

services, such as remote check capture, claims

submission at point of accident, and immediate

    person-to-person remittance. In emerging

markets, mobile phones are just now bringing

nancial services to the unbanked (people

    without a bank account), enabling

    nancial inclusion.

    Employees need choice

of mobile devices as wellCustomers expect you to support their device.

    However, IT departments typically oer

employees a limited choice of corporate-

approved mobile devices. This is changing as

banks realize that employees can be more

eective if they get to select their own

    mobile device. Your organization must

    balance employee choice with protecting

    corporate assets.

    Employees bringing their own mobile

device to work is called Bring Your Own

Device (BYOD). The benets of BYOD

include being able to shift device costs

    to employees, improving employee

    satisfaction, and accelerating technology

adoption. Risks include loss of sensitive

corporate data, creating a new penetration

point into the corporate network, and

exposure to fradulent transactions if the

    device is compromised or stolen.

ITs challenge is transforming from a closed

    corporate-device-only policy to a exible

and agile governance policy. This includes

creating a service assurance framework that

    embraces new mobile technology, while

protecting corporate assets. IT must change

their governance policy from supporting only

    corporate-sponsored devices to enabling,

while governing, the employee choice and

use of many mobile devices. This requires

technology to manage the mobile devices,

employee training, a published set of usage

guidelines, and employee buy-in thatcorporate will be managing certain aspects

    of their mobile device.

    Security is critical

Mobility presents several security and risk

    management challenges IT must

    overcome to deliver a high-quality

    customer experience:

Device overload a mix of ever-

    changing form factors, operating

    systems, and security features, along

with dierent update and life cycles.

    App threats often uploaded and

    downloaded without sucient

    security vetting.

    Network threats insecure networks

com bined with a lack of mobile network

    visibility can leave the corporate

    network vulnerable.

Data threats mobile can also expose the

nancial services system to sensitive data

leakage, particularly if the device is lost or the

    employee leaves.

    User threats non-compliance with

    acceptable use and security policies.

    A comprehensive approach helps

    ensure security and consistency

    Mobility presents fnancial services IT

professionals with a platform that can drive

    innovation and competitive advantage. It

can also bring challenges in the areas of

security and risk management. Fortunately, a

    comprehensive mobility framework addresses

    three core problem areas:

    The mobile workplace

    Mobile device management

    Mobile process integration

Moving up thevalue chain withmobile walletsThere is a turf war underway in

the mobile payment space. Newentrants, including Google, Apple,

    and mobile service providers, are

hard at work displacing banks as

    the primary provider of payment

services in the virtual world. The

    payment container that resides

on the consumers mobile deviceis often referred to as a mobile

    wallet. And analysts estimate that

as many as 200 dierent wallets

will be in the marketplace soon.

Mobile wallets can play a strategic role

Although a lot of current focus is on the

payment, its important to remember that

these services are low-margin table stakes.

Strategically, mobile wallets can go further

in providing an access point for banks.

For example, they provide an opportunity

to oer higher-value services that help

maintain customer loyalty and trust in your

nancial institution and provide new revenue

    opportunities as well.

In particular, banks can leverage mobile

wallets with existing IT investments to

    inuence purchase decisions. This opens

the door for a Groupon type model, where

the entity that aids in creating the sale for a

merchant is rewarded for their eorts with

a percentage of the sale. This percentage isas much as 25 times higher than is currently

awarded for simply processing the payment.

Banks have many other new technical

options for creating demand and moving

    cash transactions to mobile, including

    location-based couponing and Near Field

    Communications (NFC) for merchant

payments. Prepaid cards are one of thefastest growing and largest nancial services

markets, and these types of payments are also

moving to mobile. But it is the investment in

IT infrastructure that provides the important

    foundation for these new services.

    Cloud computing, security

    and analytics

HP leadership in cloud computing, data

security and analytics can help you create

sustainable value that can be delivered via a

mobile wallet on your customers device.

Cloud computing HP has created a Web-

based secure payment service that can be

called by any mobile application to process

a payment. The payment service utilizes a

    tokenization routine that removes sensitive

information from the phone and associated

applications and replaces it with a substitute

    number, a token.

Security This is the most critical success

factor for implementing mobile wallets as

access points for high-value nancial services.

To build trust, HP can help you manage data as

directed by the consumer and protect that data

    from unauthorized access.

Data analytics HP can help you nd

the sweet spot between discounting and

protability when making oers to mobile

    customers. High-speed, ecient data analytics

    combined with structured and unstructured

data mining tools help you collect and manage

    large amounts of data.

customers. Mobility also oers several new

engagement opportunities to get closer to

customers, provide them with added value,

and continue to rebuild trust in their ability to

    help them.

For example, many banks have developed

    loyalty programs and shopping assistance

where customers can choose to receive

oers, incentives, and coupons from specic

merchants. This is often combined with services

    such as location-based mobile technology

applications, where a coupon can be sent to

the customer as they approach a merchant

all at the customers choice and discretion.

Services such as this provide value and trust for

the customer and additional engagement and

transactions with their banks. Meanwhile, banks

gain greater levels of customer understanding

    and servicing.

New analytic services and capabilities now

allow banks to tailor and target new oers to

    specic customer segments. Using customer

    intelligence, banks can essentially innovate

on the customers behalf to save them

money, save them time, and deliver every

    transaction securely.

    Perceived security

concerns debunkedGenerally, the biggest customer objection to

mobile payments adoption is the perceived

notion of a lack of security. The truth is, mobile

payment technology has many safeguards and

even holds some advantages for the customer.

For example, control is always with the

customer, as their payment device is on their

phone. When making a payment at a merchant,

the device never leaves the customers hand.

Passwords and authentication are a critical

component of every application, and access

can be disabled immediately if lost or stolen.

    23Mobility in Banking Special Edition

    As nancial services industries

across the globe seek to enable

    mobility, the IT departments

within those enterprises are facingsome signicant challenges. A

    smart mobilization strategy must

    consider cost containment, security,

    performance, device diversity, and

    speed to market.

Cost containmentFor the past two decades, over 90 percent of

    enterprise business applications have been

    accessed by employees running corporate

    standard Windows desktop images. Today

however, the popularity of tablets and smart

phones, and the expectation of mobility is

    changing that paradigm.

For the IT organizationthis can spell trouble!

IT is now faced with the challenge of containing

the cost of developing, testing and supporting

enterprise applications across a diverse range

    of devices, operating systems, and

    browser combinations.

    Security

Security is often ranked as the number-onechallenge for enterprise mobility and with

good reason. Have you considered what

happens if the device is lost or stolen? Can

the device be used to gain access to sensitive

    enterprise information? Does the device

store passwords or account numbers without

encryption? How do you develop secure mobile

    enterprise applications?

    Performance

The quality of the user experience is greatly

impacted by the end-to-end performance of

    the mobile application. These applications

    transcend multiple layers of technology

and network segments to deliver enterprise

    information when and where needed.

Performance must be validated on real

devices, in real locations around the globe, andacross real carrier networks.

    Device diversity

The rapid integration of mobile technology

into peoples lives is forcing organizations

to support a very diverse range of preferred

    devices including iPhones, iPads, Windows,

Android and Blackberry devices. These devicesuse a variety of mobile browsers including

Chrome, Safari, Silk, IE, and Firefox. The

challenge for IT is to deliver applications to

these devices while still being able to contain

the cost of development, testing and

    ongoing management.

    Speed to market

The race is on to deliver new applications and

    services that increase competitive advantage

through mobility. The challenge however, is

to balance speed of release across a range of

devices with the quality experience todays

    tech savvy users expect.

    Authenticationand consumercloud identity

managementRepeatedly, customer surveys on mobile payment and mobile bankingreturn similar ndings consumers are concerned about security.

Similarly, banks have the same concern, as they control less and less of

the devices used to access accounts. The secure tools to authenticate

customers are limited. Most phones dont come with a triple DES-

    certied PIN pad.

  • 5/26/2018 H P 80364-Industry Edge

    27/46

    27Mobility in Banking Special Edition

Todays industry standard links the consumer

to the payment instrument and the payment

instrument to the phone. This approach is

similar to what is used for home banking:

    provide the consumer with challenge

questions and if the response passes, place

some cookie/token within the application that

    can be checked later.

But unlike home computers, mobile phones

are mobile. They can be easily picked up by

someone else, and if possession is all it takes,

unauthorized payments can be made. Or

perhaps in the future, the phone doesnt even

have to be in the criminals possession for

software to clone or spoof a particular phone.

On the positive side, mobile phones have the

ability to do much greater authentication than

a PC four factors to be exact:

    Something you have: The phone

    Something you know: Your password

Something you are: A biometric prole (voice,

    ngerprint, retina, etc.)

Somewhere you are: A check that ensures

that the phone is in the location requesting

    the authorization

But there has to be some balance, since a

physical location purchase does not have the

same luxury of time as does an ecommerce

transaction. Your order on Amazon can wait

while you run for coee, go to work, watch your

show, etc. In a store, however, throughput at

the cash register is the name of the game. No

one wants to wait while a consumer enters a

PIN, recites keywords, or scans their retina.

Inevitably, consumers will dictate how they

want to be authenticated, and that may dier

for the type of transaction performed. Checking

for the phones presence is ne for a stop at a

petrol station, but a biometric check may be

desired for a big-ticket item purchased in an

    area far from home.

    Mobile banking applications must take

into account this potential change in the

    transaction. Perhaps the authentication is

completed prior to approaching the cash

register, and then the checkout will return to

a simple tap and go. Responding to these

changes requires agile and adaptive banking

and payment applications as well as a variety

of tools to perform the authentication and

    security function.

    28. Mobility in Banking Special Edition

The mobile impactOnce seen as a leading-edge innovation, mobility is quickly becoming

a table-stakes requirement for any competitive enterprise. Customers,

employees and partners now demand and deserve the convenience

and always/anywhere service that only enterprise-class mobility can

provide. Organizations can realize substantial benets from enterprise

mobility. From enhanced productivity and strengthened customer

relationships to reduced risk, greater insights, and accelerated growthand revenue opportunities, the upside of mobility is clear.

Yet to realize the potential of the extended

    enterprise, organizations must address both

the strategic and tactical requirements of

    business mobility including the unique

challenges of enabling mobility within the

    enterprise. Secure, seamless, context-aware

mobile solutions are literally the killer apps

    driving todays most successful organizations.

By addressing the unique demands of an on-

the-go app portfolio, organizations can realize

the full potential of true enterprise mobility.

    Embracing the mobility chaos

Mobility is remaking the enterprise landscape,

and is delivering unprecedented opportunitiesas well as signicant new challenges. A

recent Forrester survey1 of more than 4,900

    information workers found that executives

were driving mobility uptake. Ninety percent

of executives use mobile devices while moving

between work, home, and travel, while 35

percent of employees work primarily on oce-

based desktops. The survey also found that

organizations continue to be concerned about

security and the integration of new devices.

To fully realize the promise of mobility,

    enterprises are re-evaluating how technology

is used and embedded in their organizations.Forward-looking enterprises will design

new processes and methods to meet new

    customer and constituent demands. They

will build more exible systems to meet

changing requirements. And they will interact

with customers and stakeholders in more

    convenient, more personal and more

    ecient ways.

    This approach leverages behind-the-scenes

technology to integrate and automate the

value chain, to manage risk, and to accelerate

innovation. It streamlines service delivery to

    customers, employees, partners, and citizens.

And it drives the new mobility enterprise,

giving employees freedom and exibility while

    customer relationships.

    Enabling enterprise mobility

The HP approach to enabling enterprise

mobility is ideal for organizations across all

industries that wish to reach their constituents

across multiple networks and devices. We

    accomplish this by delivering applications,

content, and services in a scalable, secure,

and reliable way. This approach leverages our

    global applications services capabilities to

    provide the architecture, systems engineering,

development, and support services our clients

need. In this way we can help an organization

simplify its applications, extend them where

    necessary, and build mobile business-

    to-business, business-to-consumer, and

    business-to-employee applications.

This approach also leverages the well-dened

    and mature, HP service-oriented architecture

(SOA). HP SOA is supported by development

and security frameworks that create building

    blocks from monolithic legacy applications.

These are used to develop and deploy mobile

applications that are designed with the future

in mind. Our methodology goes beyond cool

devices and ashy user interfaces; it is a

thorough and comprehensive look at how

    mobile applications are developed, deployed,

managed, and governed in mid-sized and

Banco Credito Inversiones of Chile (BCI) wanted to create an innovative,

context-aware mobile application that would drive increased usage by their

credit card holders. And they knew that a compelling user experience was

    critical to success.Location awareness supports

    new services

BCI had an idea that using the Global

Positioning System (GPS) functionality on their

customers mobile devices might provide an

opportunity to deliver higher-value services to

them. Knowing the customers location would

let the bank send discount oers to local

businesses like retail stores and restaurants

in close proximity to the customers current

location. If retailers made more oers, a

percentage of card holders would accept and

make additional charges to their cards.

    Designing the user experience

Together, BCI and HP collaborated on a

wireframe design as proof of concept for

the Benecios mobile app. Next, HP built

the app using native features of the mobile

devices to drag and drop selected categories

to the preference screen, and then nd the

nearest matching oers using the phones

GPS location. BCI customers can then share

the benets and oers they receive with their

family and friends on Facebook and Twitter.

    Launching the app

In the rst four months of operation, theBCI Benecios mobile app was downloaded

to more than 10,000 iPhones and Android

devices. BCI customers are enjoying the

benets of discount oers sent directly to

their mobile devices, while the bank is

    anticipating revenue growth from increased

card activity. Local businesses are also happy

as they look forward to increased sales from

    their promotions through the Benecios

    mobile channel.

    A compelling user experience is

often the most important factor in

the adoption of new mobile apps.

    The nancial services industry in

    particular must deliver a consistent,

    high-quality experience to their

    customers across all touch points

mobile, online, and at the branch

At HP Labs, we see a future in which human

    interaction with technology becomes

completely intuitive, wherever you are. To

get there, were radically simplifying the

user experience by focusing on seamless

collaboration, across devices. And by making

computer and human interactions intuitiveand simplewherever you arethe adoption

of information technology will be far more

    pervasive than it is today.

    From wireframe to deployment

People are looking for fast, context-aware

methods of interfacing with technology. They

expect technology to be easy to use, reliable,

and personalized to transparently enablemobile and immersive experiences. And
