A meeting was held on April 251995 at EPAs offices in Boston Massachusetts between RISWMCGZA and EPAHNUS The purpose of the meeting was to discuss EPAs April 14 1995 OU2RI Response Summary Review Comments and the scope of the OU2 Risk Assessment General agreement was reached on the numbers and types of samples to be collected as part of the OU2RI RISWMC will be providing EPA and RIDEM with a list of area sites potentially contributing to contamination within the OU2 study area to initiate an agency file RISWMC will perform a screening level risk assessment of the Upper Simmons Reservoir sediments to determine if additional sampling and analytical data is

necessary to complete the OU2 study General agreement was also reached on most aspects of the OU2Risk Assessment scope One major point still to be determined is the future use of groundwater on properties RISWMC does not currently own It was decided that RISWMC would move forward with preparation of the OU2RA Draft Work Plan which would include a proposed groundwater use scenario for EPA to evaluate Agreements reached at the meeting as to the form of deliverables are reflected in the schedule presented below
Operable Unit 2Task 4 Well Installations
GZA has evaluated the VOC screening geophysical analysis and hydraulic conductivity testing of the 310 foot deep bedrock well (MW95-ML9) at the Central Landfill Superfund site Based on these data we recommend installation of two 2-inch ID PVC wells screened from 133 to 143 feet and 275 to 295 feet below ground surface and one 1-inch ID PVC well screened from 85 to 95 feet The recommendation for the placement of a 1-inch ID well is based on our discussions with EPA hydrologist Mr Al Klinger who suggested that an installation of this type carefully sampled with a peristaltic pump would be acceptable for organic and inorganic analysis Well screens are to be installed as described in the OU2Task 4 field sampling plan which includes a sand filter packs extending 2 feet above and below the screens For your use in reviewing these recommendations we have attached 1) draft log of the boring 2) a table summarizing field screening results laboratory screening and hydraulic conductivity testing results 3) the borehole geophysical report completed in April 1995 by Hager GeoScience Inc and 4) a sketch of the proposed well cluster sampling zones
In order to make well placement recommendations GZA evaluated each borehole testing zone based on a three-components which were numerically rated for each zone (ie 10 foot long packer testing and groundwater sampling zone) Where necessary raw scores were adjusted to compensate for any lack of chemical testing data We weighted the estimated hydraulic conductivities more heavily than the other factors (50 Hydraulic Conductivity data 25 Chemical data and 25 Geophysical data) In estimating hydraulic conductivities we adjusted flow data to compensate for observed vertical leakage around the packers
The table below represents results of our comparison detailing the top ten zones in rank order The complete comparative rankings are provided on Table 1 attached

Having used this comparison to narrow the scope these ten test zones were then grouped by depth and more thoroughly reviewed It is clear that the highest ranking zones are concentrated at the top of the uncased portion of the borehole This provides further evidence that groundwater contaminant transport at the site occurs at relatively shallow depths However the intent of this deep borehole is to monitor deeper fractures for possible landfill-derived contamination because MW95-ML9 is part of a well cluster which already contains screens in the shallower fractured bedrock Therefore GZA recommended well placements which span the deeper hydraulically active testing zones
In selecting the deepest screened zone (designated MW95-ML9C) we reviewed the available data and concluded that Zone 2 had chemical geophysical and hydraulic properties which fulfill the selection criteria The geophysical data shows both a caliper enlargement and a temperature differential anomaly at 290 feet below ground surface which roughly corresponds with a horizontal fracture with a 05 inch aperture identified by the Acoustic Televiewer (ATV) Given roughly equivalent hydraulic conductivities and higher chemical screening results than neighboring zones GZA feels it would be imprudent to not sample the ground waters from this depth In order to compensate for the low absolute hydraulic conductivities observed at this depth we recommend installing a 20-foot screened interval which spans two zones of fracturing observed on the ATV logs
The two upper wells (designated MW95-ML9A and -ML9B) were selected based on our ranking criteria which inclusive of filter sand packs placed them at 1 and 2 respectively The upper most zone would have spanned the bedrocksteel casing interface (as described on the attached boring log) for this reason the well was shifted down to a point below the 6-inch casing

A meeting was held on April 251995 at EPAs offices in Boston Massachusetts between RISWMCGZA and EPAHNUS The purpose of the meeting was to discuss EPAs April 14 1995 OU2RI Response Summary Review Comments and the scope of the OU2 Risk Assessment General agreement was reached on the numbers and types of samples to be collected as part of the OU2RI RISWMC will be providing EPA and RIDEM with a list of area sites potentially contributing to contamination within the OU2 study area to initiate an agency file RISWMC will perform a screening level risk assessment of the Upper Simmons Reservoir sediments to determine if additional sampling and analytical data is

necessary to complete the OU2 study General agreement was also reached on most aspects of the OU2Risk Assessment scope One major point still to be determined is the future use of groundwater on properties RISWMC does not currently own It was decided that RISWMC would move forward with preparation of the OU2RA Draft Work Plan which would include a proposed groundwater use scenario for EPA to evaluate Agreements reached at the meeting as to the form of deliverables are reflected in the schedule presented below
Operable Unit 2Task 4 Well Installations
GZA has evaluated the VOC screening geophysical analysis and hydraulic conductivity testing of the 310 foot deep bedrock well (MW95-ML9) at the Central Landfill Superfund site Based on these data we recommend installation of two 2-inch ID PVC wells screened from 133 to 143 feet and 275 to 295 feet below ground surface and one 1-inch ID PVC well screened from 85 to 95 feet The recommendation for the placement of a 1-inch ID well is based on our discussions with EPA hydrologist Mr Al Klinger who suggested that an installation of this type carefully sampled with a peristaltic pump would be acceptable for organic and inorganic analysis Well screens are to be installed as described in the OU2Task 4 field sampling plan which includes a sand filter packs extending 2 feet above and below the screens For your use in reviewing these recommendations we have attached 1) draft log of the boring 2) a table summarizing field screening results laboratory screening and hydraulic conductivity testing results 3) the borehole geophysical report completed in April 1995 by Hager GeoScience Inc and 4) a sketch of the proposed well cluster sampling zones
In order to make well placement recommendations GZA evaluated each borehole testing zone based on a three-components which were numerically rated for each zone (ie 10 foot long packer testing and groundwater sampling zone) Where necessary raw scores were adjusted to compensate for any lack of chemical testing data We weighted the estimated hydraulic conductivities more heavily than the other factors (50 Hydraulic Conductivity data 25 Chemical data and 25 Geophysical data) In estimating hydraulic conductivities we adjusted flow data to compensate for observed vertical leakage around the packers
The table below represents results of our comparison detailing the top ten zones in rank order The complete comparative rankings are provided on Table 1 attached

Having used this comparison to narrow the scope these ten test zones were then grouped by depth and more thoroughly reviewed It is clear that the highest ranking zones are concentrated at the top of the uncased portion of the borehole This provides further evidence that groundwater contaminant transport at the site occurs at relatively shallow depths However the intent of this deep borehole is to monitor deeper fractures for possible landfill-derived contamination because MW95-ML9 is part of a well cluster which already contains screens in the shallower fractured bedrock Therefore GZA recommended well placements which span the deeper hydraulically active testing zones
In selecting the deepest screened zone (designated MW95-ML9C) we reviewed the available data and concluded that Zone 2 had chemical geophysical and hydraulic properties which fulfill the selection criteria The geophysical data shows both a caliper enlargement and a temperature differential anomaly at 290 feet below ground surface which roughly corresponds with a horizontal fracture with a 05 inch aperture identified by the Acoustic Televiewer (ATV) Given roughly equivalent hydraulic conductivities and higher chemical screening results than neighboring zones GZA feels it would be imprudent to not sample the ground waters from this depth In order to compensate for the low absolute hydraulic conductivities observed at this depth we recommend installing a 20-foot screened interval which spans two zones of fracturing observed on the ATV logs
The two upper wells (designated MW95-ML9A and -ML9B) were selected based on our ranking criteria which inclusive of filter sand packs placed them at 1 and 2 respectively The upper most zone would have spanned the bedrocksteel casing interface (as described on the attached boring log) for this reason the well was shifted down to a point below the 6-inch casing

necessary to complete the OU2 study General agreement was also reached on most aspects of the OU2Risk Assessment scope One major point still to be determined is the future use of groundwater on properties RISWMC does not currently own It was decided that RISWMC would move forward with preparation of the OU2RA Draft Work Plan which would include a proposed groundwater use scenario for EPA to evaluate Agreements reached at the meeting as to the form of deliverables are reflected in the schedule presented below
Operable Unit 2Task 4 Well Installations
GZA has evaluated the VOC screening geophysical analysis and hydraulic conductivity testing of the 310 foot deep bedrock well (MW95-ML9) at the Central Landfill Superfund site Based on these data we recommend installation of two 2-inch ID PVC wells screened from 133 to 143 feet and 275 to 295 feet below ground surface and one 1-inch ID PVC well screened from 85 to 95 feet The recommendation for the placement of a 1-inch ID well is based on our discussions with EPA hydrologist Mr Al Klinger who suggested that an installation of this type carefully sampled with a peristaltic pump would be acceptable for organic and inorganic analysis Well screens are to be installed as described in the OU2Task 4 field sampling plan which includes a sand filter packs extending 2 feet above and below the screens For your use in reviewing these recommendations we have attached 1) draft log of the boring 2) a table summarizing field screening results laboratory screening and hydraulic conductivity testing results 3) the borehole geophysical report completed in April 1995 by Hager GeoScience Inc and 4) a sketch of the proposed well cluster sampling zones
In order to make well placement recommendations GZA evaluated each borehole testing zone based on a three-components which were numerically rated for each zone (ie 10 foot long packer testing and groundwater sampling zone) Where necessary raw scores were adjusted to compensate for any lack of chemical testing data We weighted the estimated hydraulic conductivities more heavily than the other factors (50 Hydraulic Conductivity data 25 Chemical data and 25 Geophysical data) In estimating hydraulic conductivities we adjusted flow data to compensate for observed vertical leakage around the packers
The table below represents results of our comparison detailing the top ten zones in rank order The complete comparative rankings are provided on Table 1 attached

Having used this comparison to narrow the scope these ten test zones were then grouped by depth and more thoroughly reviewed It is clear that the highest ranking zones are concentrated at the top of the uncased portion of the borehole This provides further evidence that groundwater contaminant transport at the site occurs at relatively shallow depths However the intent of this deep borehole is to monitor deeper fractures for possible landfill-derived contamination because MW95-ML9 is part of a well cluster which already contains screens in the shallower fractured bedrock Therefore GZA recommended well placements which span the deeper hydraulically active testing zones
In selecting the deepest screened zone (designated MW95-ML9C) we reviewed the available data and concluded that Zone 2 had chemical geophysical and hydraulic properties which fulfill the selection criteria The geophysical data shows both a caliper enlargement and a temperature differential anomaly at 290 feet below ground surface which roughly corresponds with a horizontal fracture with a 05 inch aperture identified by the Acoustic Televiewer (ATV) Given roughly equivalent hydraulic conductivities and higher chemical screening results than neighboring zones GZA feels it would be imprudent to not sample the ground waters from this depth In order to compensate for the low absolute hydraulic conductivities observed at this depth we recommend installing a 20-foot screened interval which spans two zones of fracturing observed on the ATV logs
The two upper wells (designated MW95-ML9A and -ML9B) were selected based on our ranking criteria which inclusive of filter sand packs placed them at 1 and 2 respectively The upper most zone would have spanned the bedrocksteel casing interface (as described on the attached boring log) for this reason the well was shifted down to a point below the 6-inch casing

Having used this comparison to narrow the scope these ten test zones were then grouped by depth and more thoroughly reviewed It is clear that the highest ranking zones are concentrated at the top of the uncased portion of the borehole This provides further evidence that groundwater contaminant transport at the site occurs at relatively shallow depths However the intent of this deep borehole is to monitor deeper fractures for possible landfill-derived contamination because MW95-ML9 is part of a well cluster which already contains screens in the shallower fractured bedrock Therefore GZA recommended well placements which span the deeper hydraulically active testing zones
In selecting the deepest screened zone (designated MW95-ML9C) we reviewed the available data and concluded that Zone 2 had chemical geophysical and hydraulic properties which fulfill the selection criteria The geophysical data shows both a caliper enlargement and a temperature differential anomaly at 290 feet below ground surface which roughly corresponds with a horizontal fracture with a 05 inch aperture identified by the Acoustic Televiewer (ATV) Given roughly equivalent hydraulic conductivities and higher chemical screening results than neighboring zones GZA feels it would be imprudent to not sample the ground waters from this depth In order to compensate for the low absolute hydraulic conductivities observed at this depth we recommend installing a 20-foot screened interval which spans two zones of fracturing observed on the ATV logs
The two upper wells (designated MW95-ML9A and -ML9B) were selected based on our ranking criteria which inclusive of filter sand packs placed them at 1 and 2 respectively The upper most zone would have spanned the bedrocksteel casing interface (as described on the attached boring log) for this reason the well was shifted down to a point below the 6-inch casing
