Travel chaos, millions of pounds lost, and a sudden surge in the sales of GCSEGeography text books were the immediate results of the impossible to pronounceEyjafjallajoekull volcano eruption last month. The eruption affected sportsmen andpoker players alike, as the intercontinental nature of Formula 1, football and pokertours left players and fans unable to get to their required destinations, whilstmillions of holidaymakers were left stranded abroad.

It always amazes me how much of a deal is made over something like this, and itwas this last point about holidaymakers that struck me, not as pathetic, but typically British. Sure, there wouldhave been people who desperately needed to get back to the UK for personal reasons or urgent work relatedbusiness. But the majority of those who made the news were merely coming back from holiday.

The first stranded Brit who I heard from was a middle-aged male on holiday in Tenerife. Serious questions wereput to him by the BBC Radio 5 Live presenter, who had clearly been just as disillusioned with his interviewee asI was, and who would have been hoping to have heard from a man in a frantic quest to get home to the churchbefore the love of his life made a terrible error by getting married to the wrong man, or something like that.

Instead we heard how he had managed to stay an extra week in the villa he had rented whilst discussing theterrible and unfortunate events with the other tourists at the resort, by the pool. There was no confirmation atthe time, but we are probably safe to assume this man was sipping a cocktail whilst the interview was goingon, possibly with the football on in the background and almost certainly with a Hawaiian shirt on.

The media of course, after running out of things to say about the volcano, reverted to classic filler stories of howstranded Brits made their way home in the absence of flights, which I have to say, always stand for a good read. There was the chief executive of a London-based company who bought a child’s bicycle - which he was forcedto ride up the ramp - so he would be allowed to travel on a ferry as a bike passenger. There was the family fromManchester who bought a clapped out old motor in Spain, drove it all the way back without filling up withpetrol, and then flogged it on eBay as soon as they got home. And there was the young lady from Cornwall, whowith no money to her name, made friends with a travelling nomad dolphin and persuaded it to give her a lifthome in return for a can of tinned tuna upon arrival.

But amongst all the chaos, there was at least some good news for the volcano, as after erupting in the middleof the week, it got its own day named after it: Ash Wednesday. And it is now my third favourite volcano, justbehind the only two others I can remember from GCSE geography, Etna and Vesuvius.

May all your profits be large ones.Fred Palley, Editor

With the Olympics nowjust two years away, TheDepartment for Culture,

Media and Sport will be desperatelyconcerned with doing everythingwithin their power to ensure Britainwins as many Gold Medals aspossible in 2012. Well, if thebehaviour of the Lithuaniangovernment is anything to go by,then confirming the status of Pokeras an official sport could be the wayforward. The country, whosepopulation stands at 3,340,000,confirmed poker as an official sportat the end of March after theDepartment of Physical Educationand Sports recognised theLithuanian Sports Poker Federation(LSPF) as an official federation. Theruling essentially means the LSPFcan now hold non-commercial pokertournaments outside of casinos –something that was previously illegalin the country. Loudmouth Tony Gwill be delighted with the news, andwill presumably be offered the roleof team captain in any Lithuaniannational poker team.Lithuania’s official national sport isBasketball, with the national teamcurrently lying sixth in theInternational Basketball Federation’srankings.

The World’s second largest pokersite was forced to face aFederal Grand Jury in

Manhatten last month after aninvestigation into money laundering atFull Tilt, which started last October, tooka further twist.Chris Ferguson, Howard Lederer andseveral other Full Tilt players, who part-own the company, were also targets ofthe investigation but Ferguson andLederer filed a motion to dismiss thecharges. Those hoping for Hollywood tales ofdrug-money, child trafficking, and illegalarms sales will be disappointed though,as the investigation merelyencapsulates suggestions that Full TiltPoker has been operating inside the USand accepting money from US players. This, of course, would be illegal underthe terms of the Unlawful Internet

Gambling Enforcement Act, althoughthe UIGEA is not scheduled to comeinto play until June 1st after a six monthdelay was agre Will He? Won’t He? edlast December. Further twists and turnscan be guaranteed as

Punters were left reeling lastmonth after a bookie who hadincorrectly priced a scorecast in

Tottenham’s match with Chelsea, refused to payout the full price ofsuccessful bets. The unnamed bookieon Tottenham High Road had pricedJermain Defoe to score first and Spursto win 2-1 at a whopping 185/1, whenthe price should have been closer to the25/1 region.Defoe blasted home a penalty for Spursin the first half before Gareth Baleadded a second shortly before the

break. An abundance of wasted Spursopportunities meant that when FrankLampard pulled a goal back for Chelseain injury time, punters believed it wastheir luck day and expected to pocket£1850 from just a £10 stake. The bookkeeper refused to pay out thefull price though, claiming it would notpayout when such a ‘clerical’ error inthe pricing had been mistakenly made.Punters were paid out at 35/1; betterodds than they should have expectedbut not as much as they would havehoped for.

All Bets Are On In France

With their superior culinaryskills and their laissez faireattitudes to life, the French

have long since looked down theirnoses at us Brits. They don’t like oursummer invasions of their southernbeaches, they don’t like our fantastical

following of our football teams, andthey don’t like our gambling. But now,one of those looks set to change asFrance looks set to legalise onlinepoker and sports betting. The French Parliament passed a billlast month to end the state monopolyover online poker, which has restrictedits growth while creating a ‘blackmarket’ of betting and poker sites, andwill legalize and regulate online poker, sports betting and horse racing.French Budget Minister, FrancoisBaroin, said: “This will allow us toprogressively dry up the black marketin online gambling by creating a legaloffer which obeys the rules.” Sportand poker will be taxed by thegovernment, at 7.5% and 2%respectively, and the bill is expectedto come into play in time for France’sopening World Cup match on June11th, after receiving a parliamentarymajority of 299 votes to 223.

Prince William is now as short as 1/2to get engaged to his long timegirlfriend, Kate Middleton, this year,

while a Royal Wedding taking place in 2010is now available at evens.William Hill have cut the odds after a flurryof rumours on the future King proposinghave circulated over the past few weeks.Rupert Adams, spokesman for William Hillsaid: “We saw a 1000% increase in betsfor a Royal engagement in 48 hours in Apriland we can only hope Wills dithers for a bitlonger or we will be facing a monsterpayout.” The 27-year-old air to the thronehas been dating Kate Middleton since2003, when the two were flatmates at StAndrew’s university in Scotland. A shortsplit in 2007 did put a brief halt toproceedings and William Hill now clearlybelieve the couple are set to tie the knot. Those who think the Prince will wait until2011 to propose can get odds of 6/4 on a2011 engagement, and given that William’sfather didn’t marry Princess Dianna until hewas 33, there is every chance he will holdout a few more months before asking thequestion. The news comes after a WilliamHill near Windsor Castle refused to take a£2,000 bet from a man who they fearedwas friends with the Prince. Thesupposedly well-dressed and posh punterwas not allowed to make the bet after theshop manager, Luke Tear, thought he mighthave insider knowledge. Tear told The Sunnewspaper: “He wore a blazer, smarttrousers, gleaming shoes and tie – not likeour daily punters. We smelt a rat andturned him down so he put his wedge ofnotes back in his pocket, about turned andmarched out.” The crucial question, ofcourse, if the couple do get engaged, willbe when would the couple actually be ableto get married. With 2010 being a WorldCup year, there are only four free Saturdaysbefore the 2010/2011 football seasonstarts. Looks like it’ll be 2011 then.

ABetting company Bodog have announcedthey will be ignoring any contribution thatThierry Henry makes at this summer’s World

Cup after the Irishman and European MD, KeithMcDonnell, said he would not be able to enjoy thetournament with Henry involved. The markets affected by Bodog’s decision will includetop scorer, first scorer and each-way markets as wellas outright match markets. When France take on Uruguay, for example, on theopening day of the tournament, if France win thegame 2-1 and Thierry Henry is on the scoresheet, punters backing a draw will still be paid out as Henry’sgoal will be ruled out. Punters backing a France win, however, will also be paid out as the rule will not applyto winning bets.Henry’s goals will also be mucked in the top scorercharts, meaning if Wayne Rooney finishes second topscorer behind Henry in the Golden Boot market,Rooney will be deemed the victor (bets on Henry willstill be paid out though). The decision came after Thierry Henry’s infamoushandball saw France edge the Republic of Ireland intheir World Cup play-off last year. Keith McDonnellexplained Bodog’s decision, saying: “I want to enjoythe World Cup and the only way I can do that is ifThierry Henry is no longer part of it. He has alreadyruined my World Cup and I want to make sure he cando no more damage”And with less time to worry about Thierry Henry, punters will be able can devote more of their busyschedule to studying the form of the delightfulBodog girls...

We’re almost there. The longwait is nearly over. On 1stJune Fabio Capello willname his squad for

England’s first competitive tournamentsince the winker Ronaldo and Portugalknocked our nation’s football team out ofthe 2006 World Cup on penalties.

After the failure to qualify for Euro 2008followed by a solid qualifying campaign, there is a huge level of expectation onFabio Capello to lead our country to victory. It’s been four long years for England fanswaiting to see their team play at thehighest level, but the question now is whowill be trusted to wear the three lions?

There are sure to be decisions that willleave eyebrows raised. Sven’s selectionof Theo Walcott four years ago camecompletely out of the blue. At the time,Walcott hadn’t made a single appearancefor Arsenal and was still only seventeenyears old.

Before that in 2002, Sven left out FrankLampard for the Korea/Japan World Cupdespite appearing in every single matchof Chelsea’s league campaign. In hisfirst year at Stamford Bridge, Lampardalso helped his new club to the F.A. Cupfinal but a loss in that game and Sven’sdecision to leave him out meant Frankwas left with the blues.

Glen Hoddle’s call to leave out PaulGascoigne in 1998 reportedly led to Gazzawrecking the then England manager’shotel room. The theatrical midfielder hadplayed a big part in England’s qualificationbut never played for his country again.

A man for the big occasion, Gascoignecould have sparkled on an internationalstage and would surely have been aheadof David Batty in the penalty queue.

And so to the players vying to be a part ofEngland’s bid to lift the World Cup Trophyin South Africa.

Who Will Make the WorldCup Cut?

With Fabio Capello set to name his 23-man World Cupsquad on the first day of June, England’s players have

THE DEFINITES.After injuring himself whilst onChampions League duty, the wholecountry sweated whilst waiting on theprognosis for Wayne Rooney’s ankleinjury. Rooney then aggravated it furtherwhen he surprisingly played again littlemore than a week later. When it wasannounced his injury was not as seriousas first feared it felt like we’d been let offthe hook, so let’s hope it stays that way.

A fit Rooney who has scored freely forUnited this season is our only hope ofvictory in South Africa so provided hedoes stay fit, he’ll be on the plane, maybe even on his own one.

What a year it’s been so far for JohnTerry. A mainstay in the media spotlight, but also for club and country, Terry willsee the World Cup as his chance toremind the nation of what a goodfootballer he is despite being stripped ofthe captaincy.

Expected to lead the team out againstthe USA on 12th June, Rio Ferdinand’sinclusion seems a certainty and despitea shaky return after the summer, he hasimproved to marshal the Premiership’smeanest defence.

While Liverpool have had a poorseason, Steven Gerrard has not.Continually carrying his teammates atclub level, Gerrard will be grateful to beplaying alongside genuinely world classplayers.

Frank Lampard, who recently becameChelsea’s third highest goal scorer of alltime, has shone at the heart of theblues midfield this term and the timehas finally come for Lampard andGerrard to display the same form fortheir country as they have for theirclubs.

Fabio Capello sees Gareth Barry as theanchor needed in midfield to

incorporate both Lampard and Gerrardinto the England starting line-up. Barryhas played more games under Capellothan anyone else.

The majority of bookmakers havestopped taking bets on these sixplayers (as well as a handful of others)but the betting exchanges however, willremain open until the very last minute,so there’s still a chance to gamble onthese players.

Odds of less than 1.1 for all six meansthere isn’t much value in backing them, but laying one or two - Rio Ferdinand inparticular - seems to be the only way ofmaking any money.

Ferdinand has been plagued by injuriesthis season and there’s a chance hisfragile back could flare up and rule himout of the squad – such an unpatrioticbet though, means punters celebratingit should keep their winnings quiet.

Page 11: GX Digital Example UK May 2010

THE LIKELY LADS.Aston Villa have a strong contingent ofEnglish players hoping to make it to SouthAfrica and James Milner will be headingthe queue of Villa players hoping to makethe grade. Having been in scintillating formon the way to the League Cup Final andthe FA Cup Semi-Final, Capello has evengone as far as saying he has beenEngland’s most improved player thisseason.

Not far behind Milner in that queue will beEmile Heskey, who has returned onceagain to the international scene underFabio Capello. Seven goals in 57internationals is hardly going to worry toomany opposition keepers, but his powerfulapproach play and unselfish game meanshe does create chances for others andcould provide the perfect foil for Rooney. At 1/3 with Blue Square, Heskey is a goodbet to make South Africa.

Earlier this season Ashley Cole was

displaying the kind of form that hadheralded the belief he is the best left backin the world. Injury and a string of tabloidheadlines following his split from wifeCheryl may have derailed his good season, but when fit he is one of England’s bestplayers and so expect him to be in SouthAfrica this summer, even if one of ourfavourite WAGS won’t be. Only injury or apersonal crisis would prevent Cole frommaking the cut, which is why he’s onlyavailable to back on the exchanges.

Despite possessing some defensivefrailties, Glen Johnson seems to be Fabio’sfavourite choice at right back. His chargingforward runs could also provide balance ifCole is picked to do the same on the left.Wes Brown is a solid choice as a secondright-back and is currently priced at 1/2with Paddy Power. Always reliable, hewent to the last World Cup but didn’t play. Rob Green has hardly set the world alightat West Ham this season behind such ashaky defence but has looked solid when

standing between the posts for hiscountry. He started the last friendly againstEgypt and looks to be the favourite for thenumber one jersey in SA.

Joe Hart’s spectacular form this seasonhas meant he has also forced himself intocontention for the World Cup squad. At thestart of the season many deemed theManchester City loanee to be too young tomake the squad this time around but aftera string of fine performances forBirmingham, his odds have dropped to 1/4with Paddy Power and has led hisdoubters to think otherwise.

Joleon Lescott, 4/11 with 888Sport, mayhave been overvalued when ManchesterCity spent £20million on him last summerbut he is still a good player. Despite adistinctly average season, he has featuredin previous squads under Capello and isalso versatile enough to operate at left-back too. This could be Lescott’s savingpoint as in spite of England’s central

20

Page 12: GX Digital Example UK May 2010

defensive concerns, there are others –notably Tottenham’s Michael Dawson –who could edge him out of the squad.Matthew Upson however, who hasstepped in at the heart of the defence forgames against Egypt and Brazil recently, should be included in the squad as backupto Ferdinand and Terry.

Jermain Defoe has been in rich goalscoring form for Spurs this season.Currently his team’s highest scorer, Defoebagged five goals in the 9-1 drubbing ofWigan last November to further his claimsas England’s best finisher and only amiracle will see Defoe miss out this timeround.

Peter Crouch broke the record for mostgoals in a single calendar year last time theWorld Cup came around. Head andshoulders above the rest, his height givesdefences a lot to worry about, even if he isby no means a deadly finisher in the air.Crouch, who is available at 1/6 gets more

goals than Heskey, and couldn’t have donemore in the Egypt game to put his case fora start above Heskey to Capello.

THE MAYBES.Paul Robinson has had a steady ifunspectacular season at Blackburn.Coming in at 10/1 with Paddy Power, theformer England number one’s form hasprompted his club manager, Big SamAllardyce, into urging his goalie to phoneFabio personally and ask why he’s notbeen included recently.

David James is the favourite to take thethird goalie spot and has played moregames in goal than any other underCapello. But is his age finally catching upto him? At 39 James has had an injuryplagued year so far and this will be his lastchance to shine on the international scene. We all remember what happened in hislast tournament in an England shirt againstFrance, but a wise old head could offer theyounger keepers some experience.

Perhaps the best passer of the ball nowBeckham has been ruled out, MichaelCarrick must feel he stands a good chancefor inclusion even if his form forManchester United has dipped noticeably.Brought to United to feed Wayne Rooney,Carrick could be employed to squeeze alittle bit more out of our main man.

The right hand side of midfield is theposition which is still up for grabs withseveral players vying for the role. It isunlikely Capello will pick more than tworight wingers so a handful of thecontenders will miss out. With Milneralmost a shoe-in, the other playerscontesting for the wide roles are TheoWalcott, Aaron Lennon, Shaun Wright-Philips, Joe Cole and Ashley Young.

With his electrifying pace, Walcott cangive opposing defences something toworry about as he showed in the first legof Arsenal’s Champions League Quarter-Final against Barcelona. With the
