A fter seven years out of theWTA Tour because ofinjury and modelling

commitments, Russian sensationAnna Kournikova will compete atWimbledon later this month, much tothe delight of her fans the worldover. The 28-year-old formerWimbledon semi-finalist will play inthe veterans doubles event alongsideher former doubles partner and 1997Wimbledon champion, MartinaHingis, who has not played herselfsince testing positive for cocaine in2007. The fearsome duo won theAustralian Open doubles in 1999 and2002 and referred to themselves asthe ‘Spice Girls of Tennis’ thanks totheir swashbuckling looks anddubious singing abilities. Whetherthey will become known as ‘OldSpice’ at this year’s veterans event isunclear at the moment, butconsidering both are young enoughto play in the Ladies Singles eventthey may decide against the namechange just yet. No odds wereavailable for the Russian and theSwiss as GX went to print, but youcan be rest assured that if the twoare not favourites for the trophy withthe bookmakers, they’ll certainly befavourites with the crowd.

“T he age of chivalry is dead.” Atleast according to new onlinecasino, Mr Green, it is. The

site, which launched in Sweden in 2008 beforeopening in the UK last month, claims theBritish Gentleman is now a thing of the pastafter its survey results revealed only half of UKwomen consider their partner to be a truegent. The courtesy of having car doors openedfor them is something which only 11% ofwomen enjoy while only 36% of womenreceive regular compliments from their fella.UK country manager for MrGreen.com, KatMcClure, said: “Traditionally, men were theones who held doors open for their partner,

paid the bill on a date and were evensupposed to walk on the side of the pavementwhich is closest to the road. But it seems thishas become a thing of the past and thetraditional gentleman is a dying breed.” The results however, also reveal that 93% ofmen claim to act in a gentlemanly mannertowards women. This comes in spite of thefact that 53% of men say they would happilyask a woman her age or weight while 75% saythey would eye up other hot women even ifthey were on a date of their own.Mr Green will be releasing a guide tobecoming a true gentleman in the comingmonths.

FORMULA POKER

F ormula One is the latest sport thatlooks set to be targeted by thepoker world after several poker-

related developments consumed F1 in recentmonths. The most recent of these came lastmonth when Full Tilt Poker agreed asponsorship deal with Virgin Racing that willsee the FullTiltPoker.net logo adorn the Virginteam’s driving uniform, apparel, and mostimportantly, the car. In Full Tilt’s second raceas a team sponsor at the Monaco Grand Prix, things couldn’t have gone better for thepoker site as Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso foundhimself at the back of the race after just twolaps following his penalty and pit-stop afterthe deployment of the safety car. This meantthat Virgin’s Lucas di Grassi, who was oneplace in front of Alonso, valiantly held upAlonso for a few laps, ensuring the TVcameras focused on the back rather than thefront end of the race, and allowed the Full Tiltlogo to be beamed around the world for afew minutes at least.

Chris Ferguson, the former World Series ofPoker winner said on behalf of Full Tilt:“With two leaders in their respective fieldscoming together, this is sure to be agroundbreaking partnership on the globalcanvas, providing yet another level ofexcitement for all fans. We are very excitedto be associated with such a stellar brand asVirgin Racing.”Full Tilt’s foray into Formula One followsmoves by Party Poker to sponsor particularF1 drivers on the circuit. Italian driverGiancarlo Fisichella, who drives for Ferrari, isalready a part of Team Party, while 20-year-old Spanish ace, Jamie Alguersuari – theToro Rosso driver – has also recently joinedthe team.Fisicella admitted that several other F1 driversare keen poker players and said: “I am notgoing into too much detail but several of mymates are good players: Kubica, Alonso,Heidfeld, Glock and Rosberg are the ones Iwould pick out. They all love it!”

CHIVALRY IS DEAD. LONG LIVE CHIVALRY9

One of CardRunners’ toppoker training instructors,Cole South, has left the

poker training site after claiming hisinvolvement with the site hasresulted in him being ‘spread toothin’ in other aspects of his life.South, who also owned part of thesite before selling his share, beganplaying poker in 2005 as a 17-year-old and is currently studyingEconomics at GeorgetownUniversity in Washington DC.In a lengthy statement about hisdeparture, South said: “In the pastyear I have at the same time been afull time student, a professional pokerplayer, and an owner/instructor of apoker training site, and I’ve foundmyself spread too thin, LeavingCardRunners has been an incrediblytough decision for me, but it willallow me to focus on playing pokerand completing my degree.”The site has since added 25 newPros to its instructor team, all ofwhom will coach either: No LimitHoldem, Pot Limit Omaha, OmahaHigh/Low, Limit Holdem, Sit N Goesand Studd/Razz. G is for...GoalsMichael Owen’s blistering solo run against Argentina in 1998, DiegoMaradona’s mesmerising weaving dribble against England in 1986,Carlos Alberto’s ruthless finish after a breathtaking team move forBrazil in 1970; the World Cup has a penchant for producing some ofthe greatest goals ever. Our personal favourite was when Dutchmagician Dennis Bergkamp plucked Frank de Boer’s 60-yard-passstraight out of the sky during their 1998 quarter final before nut-megging Roberto Ayala and smashing the ball into the back of theArgentinean net, sending the Argentines packing in the process.

J is for...Jules RimetRegardless of how many teams go on to win the WorldCup, only five sides have ever lifted the Jules Rimet trophy, and only five ever will. The original trophy was named afterFrench Football Federation and FIFA president, Jules Rimet, who remains FIFA’s longest serving president thanks to his 33years of service. Rimet was the man who proposed staging thefirst World Cup in 1930 but never lived to see France win theWorld Cup as he died in 1950. The coveted trophy wasfamously stolen whilst on public display in London before the1966 World Cup before being found by a dog named Picklesseven days later. It was stolen for good in 1983.

I is for... If OnlyIf only Peter Bonetti had caught thatshot. If only the referee had seenMaradona’s handball. If only ChrisWaddle had tucked it into the corner. If only we didn’t have a Turnip incharge. If only David Beckham hadn’tkicked out. If only Sol Campbell’sheader had stood. If only Sven hadtaken an extra striker. If only, if only,if only: The perennial story ofEngland’s World Cup hopes.

K is for...KitThere’s no doubting it,wearing a football shirt hasa negative stigma attachedto it. Sporting a black andwhite striped kit to a blacktie awards ceremony isalmost always frownedupon - even in Newcastle.Yet when it comes to theWorld Cup, wearing afootball kit – it doesn’tmatter whose kit as longas it’s colourful – is ofparamount importance.Retro Brazilian tops are thetimeless classics, butHolland, Argentina andItaly tops also doextremely well during thetournament. Notable otherkits to have made theirown unique mark on thefashion stakes are theCameroonian sleevelesstops from 2002 and thearray of muti-colour dream-coats worn by Mexicangoalkeeper Jorge Campos.

H is for...HeadbuttThe most talented French footballer tograce the earth, Zinedine Zidanecemented himself into French legendwhen his two goals on home soil in the1998 World Cup final put France on theway to their first World Cup triumph.Eight years later though, after singlehandedly carrying an ageing French sideto the 2006 final with masterfulperformances against Spain and Brazil,he single headedly ended his side’shopes with a brutal headbutt to MarcoMaterazzi’s chest. In Zizou’s defence, ifever a player was to get sent off for aheadbutt while the whole world waswatching, this was the way to do it. Itwas the last thing he ever did for France.

TEN STADIUMS WILL HOST THE 64 MATCHES AT THIS SUMMER’S WORLD CUP, WITH AHANDFUL BEING PURPOSELY-BUILT AND THE REST RENOVATED FOR THE GREATEST

Soccer City JohannesburgCapacity: 91,141

Built in 1987, Soccer City is seen as thehome of football in South Africa andhosted Nelson Mandela’s first rallyfollowing his release from prison in1990. It has undergone a £192millionrefit for the World Cup with an outershell fitted in order for the stadium toresemble traditional African pottery. The stadium is located in Soweto, theheart of South African football. Thecountry’s two major teams, OrlandoPirates and Kaizer Chiefs are basedthere, as are two other Premier Leagueteams, Bidvest Wits and MorokaSwallows. Soccer City will host both theopening ceremony on June 11th andthe World Cup final on July 11th.

Ellis ParkJohannesburgCapacity: 62,567

Constructed in 1982 as a modern, integratedstadium offering outstanding sight lines fromevery seat, Ellis Park stands within a worldclass sporting precinct 15 minutes walk fromthe city centre, and offers outstanding office, security and medical features. Johannesburgstands out on the Highveld at 1750 metresand is notorious for its cold nights: good forthe European sides who prefer to play incooler weather, bad for those unaccustomedto playing at altitude. The second of theJohannesburg stadiums played host to thememorable moment when Nelson Mandela,in the Springboks shirt that once symbolisedAfrikaaner supremacy, presented the WilliamWebb Ellis Trophy to Francois Pienaar, thenation’s captain who had just led South Africato the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

GX WORLD CUP SPECIAL

When the game's best players go head to head over 64 matches at this summer'sWorld Cup, the one word on everybody's lips will be 'Goals'. Who will score them, how many will they score, where will they be scored? Wally Downes assesses all.Words WALLY DOWNES Pictures ACTION IMAGES

Carlos Alberto, Dennis Bergkamp,Johann Cruyff: just three names

synonymous with great world cup goals. But you won't find a betting shop takingpunts on who will score the prettiest goalat South Africa 2010. Quantity rules overquality when it comes to the golden bootbut there has been a distinct lack of greedin front of goal in recent years.

You have to go as far back as 1970 for thelast time a player hit a two-figure haul -Gerd Muller crashing home 10 for theGermans - as since then, six has been themagic number in six of the last nineWorld Cups.

Ronaldo raised a few eyebrows when heturned up to Japan and Korea in 2002looking rather portly but he was hungryfor goals as he topped the table with a

handsome eight notches. This yearthere is a plethora of talent on show, old heads and new blood, worldfootball is in fine shape and there aregoals galore throughout the world'sleagues week in, week out. If pointsmean prizes then goals at this WorldCup could certainly make you money.

If the Boot fits...Wear it

Wayne Rooney will be vying for achance to swap the protective,

plastic boot we have becomeworryingly used to seeing him sporttowards the end of the season for agolden one. A return of 26 PremierLeague goals left him second in thedomestic scoring charts behind

Chelsea's Didier Drogba and theManchester United talisman can bebacked at 12/1 to do the business forEngland in the summer. Selection will notbe a problem as the ex-Evertonian will bethe first name on the team-sheet and histemper problems are fast becoming adistant memory. This year Wazza haseven weighed in with his fair share ofheaders and England's seeminglystraightforward group makes Rooney anattractive prospect, for once.

Jose Mourinho and his Inter Milancharges proved in the Champions Leaguethat Lionel Messi is in fact a mere mortallike the rest of us. The little magician, nicknamed 'The Flea', has had a fabulousseason with Barcelona and the hopes ofArgentina rest, in part, on his diminutive

had turned into Brawn. And funnily enougha couple of weeks after we’d been workingon the BMW deal, the owners changedand we had to drop it – those are just thevagaries of sport.”

The NextStep With football’s finances increasingly in thespot light, it seems only a matter of timebefore clubs themselves look to introducegenerous player/team performance bonuses. The majority of clubs attempting to enticeworld class players with healthy contractsbut even more lucrative goal bonuses, willsoon realise there must be a way ofoperating that makes more financial sense.

It looked for a while that Portsmouthwouldn’t be able to put a team out in lastmonth’s FA Cup final because of thebonuses they were set to pay out. Andalthough their players either forfeited orrenegotiated their deals, had thosebonuses been hedged there would havebeen no problem (on the FA cup bonusfront at least).

As it is, the World Cup will be the majorfocus of the bonus business this summer, but with the Ryder Cup, the EuropeanChampionships and the Olympics on thehorizon, it won’t be long before retailerstoo are offering bonuses on just aboutevery team, player and sport going. Andthat can only be a good thing forHedgehog.

The CannyBonus PunterThe next time you buy a new TV whereyou might get money back if a certainsporting event occurs, or where you mightget a discount from a sports holidaypackage if that team or club prove to besuccessful, if you’re a truly canny punter, you can hedge it yourself.

For example, if you’ve bought a TV for£1500, and you’ve been promised £750back if England win the World Cup, youcould lay England on the betting exchangesto hedge your own bonus, meaning thatregardless of the result, you’d get a freediscount either way.

Forking out thousands of dollars on rounds ofgolf, even if we were all millionaires, wouldunquestionably put us off golf, speaking to

our friends and ever gambling again. Yet there areways of spicing up your own home games, especiallyif they’re infested with players who tighten up themoment they take down a big pot. Beer can only doso much to loosen them up a bit, so here are thebest prop bets to add to your home games to livenup the play and the table talk.

Colour of the Flop

Just like the name says, you’re betting onthe colour of the flop. One player takesred, another takes black and thedominant colour wins. This propisn’t recommended forcontinuous betting, but if youdo get involved with one otherplayer in particular, the oddsare you’ll come out evenoverall. This is best to play ifyou have an incredibly tightplayer at the table or a playerwho has won a big pot and then

tightened up. It’s an easy way toget cash moving and can also be

useful if you’re on a bad run of cards but want tostay in the action. Another way to liven it up is todouble the payout if the flop is solid red or black.

Suit of the Flop

This prop follows the same rules as betting on thecolour of the flop, and is useful for the samereasons. But this time more players can get involvedand with cash flowing between four players, thegame should loosen up further. You can also use thesame variation as with the flop colour bet and doublethe money if the flop comes out all one suit.

7-2

This game works best if you can get everyone at thetable to agree to it. The idea is that if a player wins onany street with a 7-2 they collect a bounty from eachplayer; five or six big blinds works well. You can usuallyget the game going as well by talking about it at thebeginning of the game - every time there’s a big handall you have to do is mention at the end that you wereexpecting to see the 7-2. Once you put it in people’sheads, every massive pre-flop raise becomes suspect. You will also get players coming in with it to try andbluff later, leading to bigger pots. If everyone agrees toit then it’s a great way to open up the game and addsanother dimension to every big hand.

Slow-rollingdown at thecasino isconsideredpoor form. Andrightly so. It´squite anothermatter at homethough

Martin Jacobson is a 22-year-old

professional poker player

from Stockholm who had

his breakthrough year in

2008-2009 when he final

tabled five major live

tournaments within eight

months. He also has

several big wins online

and is a regular in the

NLH MTT’s.

Even though my housemates and I haveagreed to devote more time to poker thissummer and way less time to partying anddegenerating at table games, we will definitelytake some time off for other things. One of ourmajor problems last year was that we had non-poker playing friends coming down forweekends, and they basically succeeded eachother. Most of them had never been to Vegasbefore so they obviously wanted to do thewhole tour and who can say no to that?

This year we have arranged it so everyonewho’s coming to visit will get there on thesame weekend. We have set the date for the30th of June and are planning a combinedbirthday party for me – I’ll be turning 23 thatday, and my friend Mark, who’ll be turning 25the week before. It will be quite hard to top lastyear’s Bachelor party but I´m sure we´ll find away!

Beyond that, we´ll also be playing some tennisand golf. The heat can really restrict the optionsof outdoor activities in the middle of the summerbut if you hit the court in the afternoon it’susually fine. Vegas also has several floodlit golfcourses that we´re planning on giving a try.

This will be my fourth time in Vegas and everytime I´ve said I´m going to make it over to theGrand Canyon, but it simply never happens. Well, last year we did make it to the Hoover Dam andit was cool but this year it´s definitely time forthe number one cultural stop the state has tooffer. Next to the Hoover Dam is Lake Mead, which is the largest reservoir in the US andshould make a great daytrip if we rent a boat orjet skis.

This summer has all the prerequisites to be evenbetter than last year and with it rapidlyapproaching, I´m starting to get really excitedabout it!

THINGS YOU WON´T REGRETTAKING WITH YOU TO THE WSOP!SweatshirtJust like I mentioned, the air-con is set tothe max which is great because it makesthe air fresh and easy to breathe. Theunavoidable consequence though, isthat this obviously makes it very cold -especially if you´ve got used to theVegas summer heat outside – and italmost feels like you´re suddenly

back in northern Europe. It´s really tough to keepfocused when you shiver to stay warm.

SnacksAll the events have dinner breaks but you´regoing to have to supply your body with morethan one meal during the time of play.Powerbars, Beef Jerky and fresh fruit are all soldin the main hall and perfect to keep your brainworking hard. Nothing worse than playinghungry.

Water Clearly crucial to let your body maintain focusand concentration throughout the day. Don´t overconsume it though or you will be missing handswhen running to the bathroom.

Hand soapI will never stop being frighteningly amazed ofhow few people (men way older than me)actually wash their hands after visiting therestrooms. The picture of that, combined withthe sight of players eating at the tables with theirhands makes me want to puke. Poker chipsmust be among the filthiest and most bacteria-infested things there are.

IPod Days can be long and almost unbearable andunless you are at a chat friendly table, of theinteresting kind, it´s great to have some goodplaylists in backup to reduce the risk ofrestlessness. I find it especially helpful to avoidgoing on tilt.

HeadphonesEven though the noise levels are relatively low itcan be nice to rest your ears for a bit with a pairof noise cancelling headphones. Then of course, there´s always a risk you get seated at PhilHellmuth’s table.

US working mobile phone Your process in a poker tournament isunpredictable so I would recommend a mobilephone to get in contact with friends to arrangedinner plans etc. To set a place and time to meetis far from optimal with so many people and younever know when you´ll get moved from onetable to another so it´s easy to get lost.

PassportAsides from needing it to get into the country, you´ll need it to collect your Total Rewardscard, which you need to register for events.

welcomed, once again, by the bwin girls.“As we were walking over the bridge thatcrosses the track, the bwin girls were alllined up on either side waiting to welcomethe bwin executives [Manfred Bodner andNorbet Teufelberer] so we’d timed ourentrances to perfection! The crowds weretaking photos – not of us obviously! – andthen we wondered over to the paddock.”

Valentino Rossi’s paddock was where themajority of the action was, and Sandy wasallowed to check out all the paddocks, aswell as meet the engineers and watch thedrivers prepare for the race.

“Rossi, Pedrosa and Lorenzo were all in thepit lanes and we did the whole pit lane walk. All the pit girls were out holding upumbrellas to keep the drivers in the shade. Itwas amazing. We had our photos taken witheverybody and the only problem was whenmy wife went through my camera and sawall the pit girls in the photos when I gothome!

“One of the Spanish players had beencoming to the GP every year since 1997 and

pointed out to me where he usually stoodon the other side of the track. The majorityof us were first timers but this was anabsolute dream come true for him. And wethen went round the actual track in theBWM’s after the race.”

Sandy had of course, just been witness to afrenetic display of racing in what wasconsidered the best Moto GP´s of recentseasons.

“The race was phenomenal. I don’t normallywatch Moto GP but I think I might startwatching it now. With Lorenzo overtaking

Rossi with six laps left and then Pedrosa onthe last lap, the atmosphere was absolutelyelectric down there.”

The result of such a trip for Sandy has meanthe’ll now be looking to play in more freerollson the site, and has targeted qualifying forthe WSOP in the next few years. “I camesecond in two $18,000 WSOP packages lastyear, and playing there is obviously thepinnacle event. Jerez was just sensationalthough. Cash prizes come and go but it’s thememories of a trip like that which you cantake with you. And to me it was worth a lotmore than the $8,000.”

The Last WordStupendously quick and surprisingly smallgiven Mr Hennessey’s long running love affairwith tuning big Yank muscle cars, the VenomGT is a hybrid in many senses; combiningexpertise from the US and UK to create asuper-powered V8 that is as capable on thetwisty bits as it is on a drag strip. One canonly hope in this instance the Trans-Atlanticpartnership results in a brilliantly balancedSupercar rather than a Bush-Blair generatedwar-zone, although with 1200 Bhp to feed, the extra oil will probably come in handy.

It’s still early days to speculate on the successof the Venom GT, although when you look atthe build quality and size of the Elise and thenincrease the power almost tenfold, it isguaranteed to get the pulse racing. Then most

probably kill you. And if it does, it’s a seriouslyexpensive way to go at $600,000. I justwonder whether $600k is really going to buy arefined and exotic supercar, or the rich man’sequivalent of a Vauxhall Corsa with a great bigturbo strapped to it.

The combination of a British chassis andAmerican power plant is a formula that hasrarely been adopted. However, if the successof the legendary AC Cobra is anything to goby, we are in for a serious treat with theVenom GT. Watch this space…

The All England Club will onceagain open its doors to fans, ballboys, line judges and the game’sfinest athletes for a whirlwindfortnight on June 21st.It also happens to be everycameraman’s favourite sportingoccasion thanks to the numberof seductive beauties playing inthe Ladies’ Championships.

As any hardcore tennis fan will tell you, there’s more to the sport than the fourteendays of Murraymania which grip the nationwhen the first ball is served on the lusciousgreen courts of Wimbledon at the end ofJune. They will also be acutely aware that thechances of a Briton winning as dusk filters inthrough the early-evening Centre Court sky atthe end of the fortnight, are nowhere near as

high as the inhabitants of Murray Mount -formerly known as Henman Hill and onoccasion, Rusedski Ridge – would have usbelieve.

Through sheer weight of expectation alone, the febrile belief in British chances is both aburden on our players and a stumbling blockto Tennis gamblers. Regardless of AndyMurray’s form, the public will expect him towin and the bookmakers will set his priceaccordingly; meaning his odds will almostalways be too short. Sure, punters can takeadvantage of the situation by backing hislonger-priced opponents, but securing decentvalue on Andy Murray himself will be anextremely challenging task on its own.

Thankfully though, amidst all the Union Jackwaving and chants of ‘Come on Andy’ – as

well as the witty, hilarious and never-been-done-before shouts of ‘Come On Tim’ whenMurray is playing – there will be somethingelse on display to ease our betting concerns, something even sweeter than thestrawberries and cream synonymous withSW19. The Wimbledon Women.

To the blind Wimbledon-goer, it may behard to fathom the exact species of thosecompeting in the Ladies’ event thanks tothe groaning, grunting and screaming of theparticipants. Yet for the 20/20 vision-ers,and even those who should have gone toSpec Savers, no matter how bad they arefor the ear, the Wimbledon Women aren’thalf easy on the eye. And so in homage tothe Wimbledon Women, here we runthrough those worth looking out for duringthe Wimbledon fortnight.

Odds Not Applicable

Ok, so 23-year-old model BrooklynDecker may not be a tennis playerherself, but she is married toAmerican hotshot Andy Roddick. Andif last year was anything to go bywe’ll be seeing an awful lot more ofher in the crowd during theWimbledon fortnight. Roddicksuffered a heartbreaking defeat atthe hands of Roger Federer in lastyear’s sensational final, butconsidering he has Decker tocomfort him after matches, there’sno need to feel too sorry for him.Roddick and Decker tied the knotlast year and can at last put up adecent challenge to the dominationof hardware kings, Black and Decker.

.Ashley Harkleroad.Nationality American

Age 25

Plays Right-handed

Odds Don’t Bother

The chances of spotting Ashley Harkleroad atWimbledon this summer will depend onwhether you take a copy of Playboy down tocentre court with you or not. This is becausethe American ace took time out of the gamelast year to have a baby boy and is yet tomake a full comeback to the sport. Back toPlayboy then. Harkleroad made the bolddecision to offer an extra dimension oftitillation to tennis fans by posing for Playboy. She appeared on the cover in a tiny whiteskirt with a towel draped around her neck, but there was more to come inside as sheposed naked and literally revealed all. Anyonewho knows anything about Wimbledon willknow she hasn’t won the Women’s title, butthey will know she triumphed in the Girls’Doubles with Gisela Dulko in 2001.

.Mathilde Johansson.Nationality French

Age 25

Plays Right-handed

Odds Je ne sais quoi

One look at Johansson and you’d beforgiven for thinking she’s one of Sven-Goran Erikson’s compatriots. Yet while the25-year-old was born in Gothenburg toSwedish parents, she actually competes forFrance. Despite wining a couple of ITF titlessince turning pro in 2000, Johansson isranked number 251 in the WTA Tour singlesrankings, which means she’s only the 16thbest female French tennis player in theworld – although would be the third bestSwedish player if she competed forSweden. English fans of the baseliner willbe disappointed to hear that Johansson willalmost certainly not qualify for Wimbledonthis year. If she does, I won’t just eat myhat, I’ll smother Johansson withstrawberries and cream and eat her too.
