lAwrEncEVillE — the Aurora theatre contin-ues their 16th “sensational season” with Glen berger’s “underneath the lintel” from the lab series. it runs from thursday through oct. 2.
the one man show is about a dutch librarian (played by steve coulter) who becomes obsessed with a baedeker travel guide, a book that was recently re-turned to the library and it was 113 years overdue.
the librarian has no idea who returned the book and he goes to great depths to find the original person who had the book on loan.
“He is very desperate because he’s trying to jus-tify his own existence in one night,” coulter said. “He is absolutely obsessed with finding this person.”
the librarian looks through his “box of scraps” to find more clues including a 73-year-old dry cleaning slip to the missing iden-tity. He uses 70 pieces of evidence to connect the dots and find what he’s looking for. the audience is with
him for the whole trip.“the audience partici-
pates in the play because he keeps them involved,” coul-ter said. “He always says, ‘now stay with me here.’ He even gets upset when the audience laughs, but he’s a very dear character. He has lived alone his entire life.”
those who watch the show will be very enter-tained, but they may walk away with more than just a night at the theater.
“i think the audience will feel less alone in the world (after watching the play),” coulter said. “the character is so alone, but there is a tre-mendous meaning for being here, no matter what you’ve lost or what you’ve failed at. there is a simple joy of just being here.”
the performance is spon-sored by Georgia Gwinnett college. For more informa-tion, visit auroratheatre.com or call 678-226-6222.

Fall is slowly approach-ing. with the change of the season, the air becomes crisp and chilly. it is the perfect atmosphere to tell ghost stories and lucky for you, there are two places who narrate the best tales for a spooky good time.
the Aurora theatre guides curious ghost fanat-ics through historic law-renceville either by walk-ing tours or on a trolley. the tours are offered every Friday and saturday night in september and every night in october.
the tours begin after the sun goes down at 8:30 p.m. in front of the theater.
A guide walks the group around the downtown square to numerous loca-tions with paranormal ac-tivity.
“what really creeps peo-ple out is that when you go inside the jail, and it’s been preserved since the 1800s. you hear the story of what happened there, and you see in the wall where the person has clearly chipped away trying to escape. you get a better understanding that this was a person, and that there is a haunting as-sociated with this person’s unjust demise and treat-ment,” Al stilo, director of sales and marketing for the Aurora theatre said.
For more information on the Aurora theatre tours, times and ticket prices, visit www.auroratheatre.
com or www.scarystroll.com.
the city of norcross also has bone chilling ghost tours thursday through saturday nights from 6:30 to 11 p.m.
Guides walk groups through the city chroni-cling stories of southern spirits who haven’t quite left norcross yet. many of the tales are tragic, like t.b. ray, who was shot and left at his door step, or Effie nash who has never checked out of the bruns-wick inn.
their stories and soul have been lingering for decades, trapped in limbo between worlds.
For more information about the tour, visit www.norcrossghost.com or call 404-934-4805.

Picasso, Jasper Johns, andy warhol, constantin brancusi, Jackson pol-lock, Fernand léger, ro-mare bearden, alexander calder, louise bourgeois, giorgio de chirico, mar-cel duchamp, Joan miró and piet mondrian.
“these artists ushered in new ways of thinking that forever transformed the artistic landscapes of europe and the u.S. and reinvented the very idea of art,” said michael e. Shapiro, the High’s nancy and Holcombe t. green, Jr. director. “our visitors will see the de-velopment of each artist’s signature style and the works considered to be among their best, giving the residents of our city, state and region a unique opportunity to experience the historic foundations of modern art.”
Visitors to the High will glance through the vari-ous forms of art created by these men — cubism to Surrealism to abstract art. there is something for everyone, including metal and wood work by calder and brancusi.
pablo picasso’s most famous paintings to be at the exhibit are “girl be-fore a mirror” depicting his young mistress ma-rie-thérèse walter and “night Fishing at an-tibes,” which was painted right before world war ii began
Jackson pollock’s drip-py “number 1a” will be on display for visitors to interpret for themselves and andy warhol’s infa-mous “Self-portrait” will stare at you for hours.
“this exhibition will offer our visitors a per-sonal encounter with the modern masters un-like any exhibition in the
past,” Shapiro said.the High museum has
collaborated with new york city’s the muse-um of modern art since 1997 to present large ex-
hibitions, including this one.

Broadway sensation ‘Wicked’ comes to the Fox Theatre this fallGoodvs.Evil
By Meghan Kotowskistaff writer
meghan.kotowski @gwinnettdailypost.com
AtlAntA — they’re not in Kansas anymore — they’re in Georgia.
the broadway sensa-tion “wicked” comes to the Fabulous Fox theatre wednesday through oct. 9 with the story of the residents in the land of oz before dorothy and toto come to town.
For those of you who are “wizard of oz” fans, you will learn the back story of Glinda the Good witch (played by Aman-
da Jane cooper) and the wicked witch of the west (played by dee roscioli). before they received their infamous titles, the witch-es met as students at shiz university.
Glinda was a popular blonde with unstoppable ambition and a sunny dis-position while Elphaba (or the wicked witch) was awkward, emerald green and went against most mainstream ideas.
somehow, the two polar opposites become friends, but there is eventually a rift in the relationship. the women have different opinions about the gov-
ernment, they fall in love with the same man and Elphaba begins to walk down a darker path. And as they say, the rest is his-tory.
As the women drift apart, dorothy comes to oz, but it is a side note in the play. locations and situations while the ruby red slippered girl is in town are woven into the messy web of drama to highlight events from l. Frank baum’s 1900 clas-sic “the wonderful wiz-ard of oz.”
besides the overall plot, there are undertones of moral issues in society for
the audience to take into consideration.
“it’s really a philosoph-ical story,” mark Jacoby who plays the wizard said. “it treats the nature of good vs. evil. which is really each and how do we distinguish them?”
He later added, “through names like ‘wicked’ witch, Glinda the ‘Good,’ the ‘wonder-ful’ wizard of oz, this story turns these ideas on their head.”
the wizard also has flaws shown to the audi-ence. He may have the power and control in oz as the mystical, magical
character, but soon that is dispelled.
“there’s an aura around his representation,” Jaco-by said. “He’s an ordinary guy and you find that out sooner in the story than in the ‘wizard of oz.’”
“wicked’s” music and lyrics were written by ste-phen schwartz and winnie Holzman wrote the script. the musical was adapted from the book “wicked: the life and times of the wicked witch of the west” by Gregory magu-ire.
“it’s different than the musical,” Jacoby said. “i would say that ‘wicked’ is
more inspired than based on the book.”
the show is recommend for children 8 years old and up. the stage effects and content may frighten younger views. Abso-lutely no children under 4 years old admitted.
“it’s a really good story with really vivid charac-ters and great stage pro-duction,” Jacoby said. “there is a tie between entertainment of the piece and battle between good and evil.”
