Welcome to our 12th annual sale. Another year of luck, just enough rain, just enough hay. We have a very consistent set of bulls on offer. We continue to select using EPD’s from gain ability to calving ease to superb maternal traits AND calm dispositions. Something to be said about calm, we walk in the pens and spend time around our cattle every day. We believe it is our obligation as purebred breeders to provide you, the customer, with trouble free genetics that positively affect your profit margin. It is also important that we sell you a bull based on what you need, so don’t hesitate to ask for our help in your selection, we know the parents. These bulls all pass semen tests and you can trust we stand behind our product. Dennis and I want to say the bulls we offer get better every year, it is a subjective thing. They sure are impressive this year-2018!!! The reason why? A few seconds while sorting cows in the alley on a dusty hot day in July, I stop and ask “why are we doing this” and as 111Z and her bull calf 95E goes by, a favorite pair, the question is answered, “it is our passion for cattle”. Selecting sires, awaiting the new born calf and what she brought us this year, watching them grow over the summer, selecting the keepers in the fall, it is enjoyable. BUll ManageMentYarrow Creek Farm & RanchThe sale bulls were raised on milk and grass (no creep). Bulls are weaned first week in September and introduced to a low % grain (oats/barley) ration and free choice hay. Ration is gradually increased for growth and gainability. Lots of straw at all times.

The Fort Macleod Veterinary Clinic is pleased to

provide Veterinary services to Yarrow Creek Farm and

Ranch. They have a well-developed herd health program.

All breeding females receive an annual vaccination with

the Express line of vaccines ensuring some of the best

protection against IBR, BVD Type 1 and 2, BRSV and PI3

as well as a complete scour vaccination protocol. Calves

receive vaccinations at birth (Inforce) and at weaning

calves are properly vaccinated with Pyramid 5 Presponse

and a 7way Clostridial Somnus vaccine. Breeding females

are boosted prior to breeding with the Express line of

Vaccines. The herd receives routine deworming and

ectoparasite control. This year all Bulls entering the sale

will have received at least one dose of Fusoguard to aid in

the reduction of Foot Rot. You can be confident that the

Bulls purchased from Yarrow Creek Angus come with a

solid health foundation.

The Fort Macleod Veterinary Clinic is happy to provide

veterinary service to Wes and Carolyn Gurney. We are

involved with all of the Gurney’s operation including

breeding soundness evaluations. Currently Wes’s bull

calves receive a 5 way viral modified live vaccine with

Pasteurella and a 7 way Clostridial Somnus vaccine at

weaning (Pyramid 5 with Presponse and Fermicon 7). All

bull calves have received treatment for both ecto and

endo-parasites. Bulls will also have been fully vaccinated

with Fusoguard to aid in the prevention of food rot.

BUll ManageMentGurney Land & LivestockAll cows are run under commercial conditions, meaning the calves get no special treatment like creep feed and the cows are on pasture for 10 months of the year. The bulls were weaned on September 20th and Herd Health protocol (below) was followed. Bulls are fed 1% of their body weight of rolled barley and a mix of 2nd and 3rd cut alfalfa silage.

We had selected a 116B a Mama’s Boy son from U2 to carry on the Mama’s Boy 167X line as I was really impressed with bulls. 116B is definitely following in his sire’s foot steps. His calves are averaging 80lbs and having YW index’s of 106; so we know these calves perform. He is also a good carcass bull with EPD’s at 8%, 9% & 8% in Yield Grade, REA, and Fat. You don’t find many bulls with those kind of carcass numbers in ALL those traits. He’s definitely a carcass grade improver.

Back in 2014 when we purchased APEX we knew he was a good bull but we didn’t know how good. Well after 3 calf crops and females now milking you really find out how good a bull truly is. With his dark deep cherry red color with pigmented feet he passes that on nicely but where he truly has shined is in Calving EASE. He went from a -1.2 BW to a -4.3 BW (Top 5% averaging 81lbs on calves). Also on CE went from a +7.0 to a +12.0 (now top 1%). His Yield grade, Ribeye and Fat are all in the top 10% too. He has ultimately changed our herd to the better.

Excalibur is almost the same type of bull as 103E but with a little more punch. The dam Priscilla 1106 is a moderate framed cow with a perfect udder and lots of milk.
