Consult your dentist at least once a year for a complete oral checkup (he/she may suggest scaling). Adopt good and regular oral hygiene habits Keep this in mind: Brush your teeth for 2 minutes after each meal. Brushing is essential to combat dental plaque, responsible for gingivitis. Gingivitis is a gum inflammation, expressed by gum swelling and unusual redness, sometimes associated to pain and bleeding either during brushing, or even spontaneously. This first stage is perfectly reversible. Yet, if left untreated, gingivitis may slowly evolve for years and lead to receding gums and falling teeth. This is called periodontitis. There are many different signs. You must be particularly careful if you notice any of these signs and consult your dentist as early as possible: Red and/or swollen gums Persistent bad breath Pain at gum level It usually results from the build up of a deposit on the teeth, known as dental plaque, and onto which bacteria will develop, causing gum inflammation. What are the factors that promote or worsen this pathology? Many factors are likely to have an impact on gum condition, including: Tobacco Diabetes Hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause) Similarly, periodontitis can have consequences on general health: cardiac risks, premature birth, difficult-to-treat diabetes.
