Zabrze is a city, which has been consistently performing promotion strategy as industrial heritage tourism centre, mainly based on preserved sites of previous coal mining. According to the city development strategy, Zabrze will be crucial point on the European route of industrial heritage, fulfilling its duties as ambassador of industrialheritagetourism development. It is here in Zabrze, where International Tourism Fair of Industrial Heritage and Underground Tourism along with the thematicconference for the representatives of postindustrial sites from all over the world take place every year.

One of postindustrial sites in Zabrze is the Historic “Guido” Coal Mine, which is perceived to be an exceptional monument of mining technology globally. It is worth mentioning that, it is one of four coalmines in Europe, where is possible to go down on the underground tourist route by means of the authentic mine cage. The site is situated on the Industrial Monuments Route of the Silesian Voivodeship, and since 2010 has been the part of European Route of Industrial Heritage.

Guido Mine was set up in 1855 and it was named after the founder count Guido George Frederick Henckel von Donnersmarck. In 1987 the Provincial Conservation Officer registered the old excavations, the buildings of hoisting machine and shaft top on a list of monuments. Due to actions taken by many people, who care about the preservation of the industrial heritage of city, appropriate measures have been taken in order to save this place by adapting it for tourist purposes. In 2007 The Historic “Guido” Coal Mine opened its gates to tourists, acceptingmore and more people enchanted by industrial tourism.

TOURISMAttractiveness of Guido is based on a few areas of activity. The first one is tourism. The sightseeing of Mine begins on the surface, where the tourists may see monumental huge mining machines. Going down under the earth, the visitors have an opportunity to visit two underground routes on levels 170 and 320m.

Level 170, length about 400m, includes original excavations driven in years 1887-1889, in rocks originating from the carboniferous period along with preserved over one hundred years old, fully equipped stables for horses.It is here, where the history of coal and mining industry XIX century is presented.

Level 320 was drilled at the turn of the XIX and XX centuries. It is a system of corridors based on two excavations with a total length of over 2 km, which allow the tourist to discover the real atmosphere of excavations. Main attraction of this level is the display of work of huge mining machines.

CULTUREAnother area of mine activity is culture. Guido Mine is fast-developing culture institution. Within the frameworks of the cyclical action called “The Level of Culture” Guido presents its unique interiors targeted at music and theatre lovers. In this place there is the deepest located theatre and music stage in Europe, where cyclical cultural events take place within the frameworks of two projects: “The Level of Theatre” and “The Level of Music”. An exceptional interior, unusual acoustics and unique atmosphere along with presented culture with the highest standard, create unique enterprise that has no its equivalent not only in Poland, but in Europe.

Apart from the cycle of events in the frameworks of “The Level of Art” there is a set of interesting cultural events provided and many entertaining outdoor activities.

EducationThe Historic „Guido” Coal Mine is considered as one of the most interesting sites on the Industrial Monuments Route of the Silesian Voivodeship. In order to introduce closer the history of Upper Silesia, particularly taking into consideration the history of coal mining our Mine offers rich educational program.

Educational offer is carried out on both levels 170, and 320. In order to enrich the sightseeing of touristic routes apart from the thematic lessons and additional attractions, Guido makes young people to be interested in postindustrial sites, and at the same time leaving in their memory unforgettable and fascinating adventure.

InvestmentsVery important for Zabrze city and Guido Mine is revitalization and reclamation program of postindustrial grounds including over 600ha after heavy industry and 6km of excavations. Currently, Guido is being carrying out revitalization projects of total worth almost 100 million PLN. Due to obtained European Union funds there will be new touristic routes available for the tourists.

According to Guido Mine development plans, in the result of realization of investment plans in Zabrze,there

will be the centre combining both the preservation need of culture technology heritage and creation of unique touristic attraction. Consequently, there will be two,already functioning,underground sites as base, which are: The “Queen Louise” Historical Mine, belonging to the Coal Mining Museum and the Historic “Guido” Coal Mine.

Amazing attraction will be the longest, about 2,5km, hydro-technical construction in European coal mining – The Main Key Hereditary Adit (The Main Adit).

Furthermore, in the result of grounds revitalization there will be Park 12C. It will be the place on the surface of the earth divided into four zones: the Earth, Water, the Air and Fire. The children will have the chance to see how the temperature deep in the earth is increasing, and get to know the basic principles of hydrodynamics by playing with systems of dams and locks situated on the artificial stream, as well asto check how the first camera works – camera obscura.

There will be also an interactive exhibition of the Valley of Coal. The prior subject will be the history of coal, its beginning in carboniferous period, through exploration and usage as fuel, profiting its chemical and physical properties, and also taking advantage of its properties in future technologies,e.i: nanotechnologies and micro-engineering.

Apart from above listed attractions there will be food and hotel services provided for the visitors. As the final effect of all assumed investment activities there will be a magnet,which will attract to the city the tourist from the whole Europe. At this moment it is estimated, that after finishing of projects realization, the complex will be visited at least by 250 thousands of people every year.

To sum up the cooperation with The Historic “Guido” Coal Mine it is not only common realization of enterprises with the highest standards in areas such as culture and tourism, but also in education area. Namely, close perspective of enriching Mine`s offer through starting new touristic routes will make this place the biggest centre of industrial heritage tourism in Europe.
