GUIDELINES FOR THE USE OF COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY AND
ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION WITHIN THE SU UNDER FACILITIES
MANAGEMENT
This guideline must be read in conjunction with the global University
Communication Policy
• Your SU device (Desktop PC, Laptop, Tablet, PDA) is to be used primarily for University applications and execution of day to day work
• Limited private use is permitted.
CONDITIONS OF USE
• Use for private business of any nature through any form of SU communication system is prohibited
PRIVATE BUSINESS USE
• Social networking is permitted when used to conduct and undertake SU work / projects
• Only limited non-work time use of private
social media is permitted (e.g. Facebook, Twitter) provided that bandwidth and functionality of SU communication systems is not affected.
SOCIAL NETWORKING
• No public opinion about the SU is permitted to be launched by any personnel on any form of communication vehicle such as, email, internet, social media etc.
• Any public communication with media etc. on behalf of the SU must be approved by SU Communication Department
PERSONAL OPINION
• No intimidation, harassment etc. is to be implied or alluded to in any form or means on any type of communication document whether electronic or otherwise
INTIMIDATION/ HARASSMENT
• Access and use of email and Internet is meant solely for SU work, production and communication
• Limited private use is permitted to address day to day personal responsibilities such as banking, medical-aid and limited private communication.
USE OF EMAIL & INTERNET
POTENTIAL HAZARDS WHEN USING ELECTRONIC MEDIA
• Cookies • Home computers• Installation of software• Software supplied by SU• Bulk emails / chain letters• Free software and conditions• Create strong passwords & update regularly

• New systems and procedures of data storage and communication networking are currently being investigated and will be rolled out during 2015
