Guidelines for Discipline Panel Faculty on Using the CHEO Wiki to Post Information on NANSLO Lab Activities

A wiki is merely a website that is easily built using a web content management tool – in this case the PBworks

interface. Wikipidia is probably the largest wiki out there. Wikis allow people to easily review and contribute to

a topic and, in the case of PBworks, post documents that can be shared, modified and re-posted.

The Curriculum Leads, based on their permission level of “Writers,” are able to add and edit wiki pages and post

documents. In your role as Discipline Panel faculty, based on your permission level of “Reader,” you will use this

wiki to review and post comments to wiki pages created by the Curriculum Leads reflecting changes needed.

The Curriculum Leads will edit the wiki pages based on your feedback so that the NANSLO Lab Activity

curriculum being developed closely aligns with your needs.

The finalized NANSLO Lab Activity curriculum will be delivered in a Word format so that you can easily customize

it for your class. All material produced will be subject to CC BY Attribution. It allows you to distribute, remix,

tweak, and build upon this work as long as you credit the original creators of the work. See Openly Licensed

Curriculum on the NANSLO website for more information.

Accessing the CHEO Wiki for the First Time

You have been added to the CHEO wiki as “Reader.” For those of you who have not used a PBworks wiki before,

you will first need to set up a password to allow you to use the “Reader” privileges. See “Setting Up Your Login

and Profile” on pages 4-8 below.

Accessing the CHEO Wiki

To access the CHEO wiki, go to http://cheo.pbworks.com.

Folder/File Structure for NANSLO Activities

In the CHEO wiki, there is a folder entitled “Discipline Panels Workspace.” All work related to the NANSLO Lab

Activities will be placed within this area and will be delivered as wiki pages.

High level information about the NANSLO activities will be placed in the Discipline Panel Workspace folder. For

example, when selecting the Discipline Panels Workspace folder, there is a web page entitled “Letter to Project

Leaders to Expand Discipline Panel Members.” This letter speaks to NANSLO activities in general and was sent

out to the CHEO Project Leadership team asking them to encourage faculty to participate in this initiative as

Discipline Panel members. It has some good talking points on why to use remote web-based labs.

FOLDER STRUCTURE WITHIN THE DISCIPLINE PANELS WORKSPACE

Within the Discipline Panels Workspace, a folder has been created for each NANSLO Lab Activity.

General Folders Within or Outside of the Activities Folders – The Curriculum Lead responsible for an activity

may add other folders. You will only need to review information in these miscellaneous folders if directed to do

so by the Curriculum Lead.

CONTENT IN THE ACTIVITY FOLDER

Overview Page – Each NANSLO Lab Activity will have an “Overview” wiki page. The Curriculum Leader will

develop information on this overview page about that activity, e.g. background information, the focus for the

activity, learning objectives and critical thinking questions. It is the first step in developing the NANSLO Lab

Activity curriculum. You will be asked to comment on the overview page noting additions and modifications

needed. Once final, the information developed here will be used to begin developing the NANSLO Lab Activity.

NANSLO Lab Activity Page – a web-friendly NANSLO Remote Lab Activity template has been developed for each

NANSLO Lab Activity. The Curriculum Leads and others with “Writer” capability will use this web-friendly format

to build the NANSLO Lab Activity information. The Curriculum Lead responsible for the activity will use the

feedback from the Overview Page to begin developing this Lab Activity document.

As additional components of this NANSLO Remote Lab Activity wiki page are developed, you will be asked to

make comments on additions and modifications to this wiki page. Although you can set up PBworks to notify

you as changes occur on wiki pages – see page 6 discussing setting “Preferences,” Curriculum Leads will also use

the appropriate listserv to send out notifications of major changes and requests for review and comment. You

are currently members of those listservs based on the discipline of interest – [email protected];

[email protected]; and [email protected].

Using the Overview and the NANSLO Lab Activity wiki pages as the place to capture comments from you allows

the Curriculum Leads to use one location to capture all the dialogue surrounding the development of that

activity.

The How To’s on Posting Comments to the Discipline Panel Workspace

Setting up Your Login and Profile

There are five permission levels for this wiki:

Page-level only can only access pages you explicitly give them access to.

Readers can view pages, but not edit.

Writers can view and edit pages.

Editors can view, edit, move and delete pages and folders.

Administrators always can do anything on pages and folders.

Discipline Panel faculty have been provided “Reader” permission by the Administrator and have received an

email indicating that this privilege is available.

The “Reader” permission is not automatically available to you. Please follow these steps to allow you to post

comments to wiki pages.

NEW TO PBWORKS

Step 1: If you have not used PBWorks before, you must establish a password to log into the wiki to use the

capabilities available to you. To do so, go to https://my.pbworks.com, a central home for all workspaces under

our PBworks account, and select the “Sign up” link.

5 | P a g e

Step 2: On the “Create a PBworks account” page, do the following:

1. Enter your name, e.g. Sue Smith.

2. Enter the email address used to provide you with access to PBworks.

3. Enter a password.

4. Re-enter the password.

5. Select the “Create Account” button.

Return to https://my.pbworks.com. Complete the following steps:

6 | P a g e

Step 3: Under the “Home” tab, note that all wikis you have access to our listed here. Under preferences, “At

most every hour” is the default. Select the drop-down arrow to select the notification frequency you prefer.

Here is a sample notification that is sent to your email when a change is made to the CHEO wiki.

7 | P a g e

Step 4: Select the “Profile” tab and modify the information as needed. Please type in your preferred name in the “Name” field. Also, if you are using an email address that does not have your institution name in it, e.g. [email protected], please note in the AIM field your institution name. It helps the Administrator to know the organization you are associated to.

It is also your choice whether or not to include a picture; however, personalizing with a picture creates a more personal connection with others who view your posts. Save the changes.

If at some point in time you want to be removed from this wiki, you would use the “Delete” link to do so.

Page 8: Guidelines for Discipline Panel Faculty ... - cheo.pbworks.comcheo.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/69766153/Discipline... · a topic and, in the case of PBworks, post documents that can

Step 5 (Optional): If you want to use a different email address than that used initially to set up your account or you would like to add another email to your account, select the “Email” tab.

FORGOT YOU’RE MY.PBWORKS PASSWORD

If you have forgotten your PBworks password, go to https://my.pbworks.com/?p=forgot. Enter the email

address used to provide you with access to PBworks and select the “Reset password” button.

An email will be sent to that address. Follow the instructions to reset your password.

Wiki Navigation

To access the CHEO wiki, go to https://cheo.pbworks.com. Notice that when you access the site, you are

typically not logged into it. You must be logged in to the site to use the editing privileges assigned to you.

Step 1: Select “log in.”

Step 2: Enter your email address (if it is not already entered in this space) and your password and select the

“Log in” button.

You now have access to “MyPBworks which, when selected, takes you to your PBworks Home page.

You also have access to “Workspaces.” In this case there is a drop-down area by this as the person logged in has

access to multiple wiki workspaces. By selecting the down arrow, the person can move from one wiki to another

(referred to as workspaces in PBworks.)

CHEO reflects the wiki currently being viewed by this user.

On the far right hand side, the name of the person logged into the wiki (based on the Profile name) appears.

“Account” takes you to your PBworks Profile tab. When you select “log out” you no longer have access to your

editing capabilities.

Under the My PBworks tab, you will see a “Wiki” tab and a “Pages & Files” tab. Selecting “Wiki” automatically

takes you back to the home page for the wiki you are in – in this case the CHEO wiki.

By selecting the “Pages & Files” tab, you will view a list of all folders in the wiki. By clicking on a folder name,

you will see files/folders within that folder. Pages & Files display is similar to viewing your folder/file list on your

computer and functionally works in a similar fashion. In the instructions below, you are shown how to use the

“Navigate” pane on the wiki home page to navigate to a folder/file. You can also access folders and files using

the “Pages & Files tab.

The “Sidebar” is used to announce new things that are happening with respect to the CHEO project. If you

would like to have announcements added with links to your pages, please send an email to Sue Schmidt with the

sentence to be added and what it should be linked to.

The Navigator box can also be used to navigate to a folder/file. See “Navigating to Discipline Panels Workspace”

instructions below for more information on how to use the Navigator.

Recent activity shows you things that have recently been changed on the wiki.

At the bottom of each page, there is an area that allows you to add comments. This area is where you will

provide feedback to the Curriculum Leads on the NANSLO Lab Activity they are developing on your behalf.

Posting a Comment to a Wiki Content

As mentioned previously, a wiki is a website that you can easily change. All information created for the NANSLO

activities being developed by the Curriculum Leads based on your input will be delivered as wiki pages. The

Curriculum Leads typically will use two documents for this work – the Overview page and the NANSLO Lab

Activity template. However, they may also develop additional wiki pages with information pertinent to that

activity asking for your feedback through comments to that page.

“Notify me when my workspaces change” (Page 6 above) allows you to receive notifications automatically as

information changes on these wiki pages. To stay actively involved, we encourage you to use this setting but set

it to a timeline that makes sense to you.

NAVIGATING TO THE DISCIPLINE PANELS WORKSPACE

Step 1: Access the CHEO wiki (https://cheo.pbworks.com) and then scroll down until “Discipline Panels

Workspace” is visible.

Select the “Discipline Panels Workspace” link in the Navigator.

Page 17: Guidelines for Discipline Panel Faculty ... - cheo.pbworks.comcheo.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/69766153/Discipline... · a topic and, in the case of PBworks, post documents that can

17 | P a g e

Step 2: Next, select the NANSLO Lab Activity folder link to view the contents of that folder.

Step 3: Select the wiki page you wish to view.

Page 18: Guidelines for Discipline Panel Faculty ... - cheo.pbworks.comcheo.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/69766153/Discipline... · a topic and, in the case of PBworks, post documents that can

18 | P a g e

Remember, if you are not logged in, you will only be able to view the page not post comments about the

information you have reviewed.

If you select “log in” at this point, you will be taken to the log in screen. Once you have logged in, PBworks takes

you back to the home page of the CHEO wiki so you will need to navigate to the desired page again.

Step 4: Review the document and post your comments.
