Introduction

● Background• As part of the development of these Guidelines, Lloyd’s Register has visited two

Stena Line ships sailing between Harwich and Hoek van Holland

• These ships are Stena Britannica and Stena Hollandica

• Both ships are fitted Wartsila closed loop EGCS systems to the four main engines

● Application• Although these Guidelines are prepared based on a closed loop EGCS which make

use of a number of chemicals, they may be applied to all ships that make use of different types of EGCS regardless of ship type, flag or operational profile

● Recognitions• Lloyd’s Register would like to express deep gratitude to the crews on board Stena

Britannica and Stena Hollandica and to the Stena Line shore staff for their patience, assistance and hospitality during onboard and office visits. These Guidelines could not have been developed without their open and valuable input

Alkali

● Closed loop systems typically use sodium hydroxide as alkali in a 50% aqueous solution– Choice of materials

– pH of 14, hazardous, can cause severe skin burns, respiratory damage and eye injury.

– Alternative alkaline: magnesium oxide and sodium bi-carbonate

● Loading

● Storage

● Use

Consumables management

● An acidic solution (pH<3) of water with polyaluminiumchloride:– Coagulant breaks the charges

around the particles so that they can reach and collide against each other and form small floc

– Loading

– Storage

– Use

Coagulant

Page 6: Guidelines: Consumables and Waste Management · Guidelines: Consumables and Waste Management Closing the loop Mrs Yildiz Williams & Mr Andy Wright 12 December 2018

Consumables management

● Flocculant (pH 4) is a polyacrylamide – a polymeric material containing volatile hydrocarbons:– The long chain molecules of the

flocculant sweep the coagulant floc into clusters.

– The flocculant then floats the contaminants to the top of the liquid.

– Loading

– Storage

– Use

Consumables management

● Chemicals used for calibration checks on the Effluent Monitoring Module. These may be:– Test standard for calibrating the

pH-sensor

– Turbidity test standard for calibrating the turbidity-sensor

– PAH test standard for calibrating the PAH-sensor.

Other chemicals

The exact required specification of the chemical shall be described in detail within the relevant MSDS which shall be made available at the relevant storage area and where it is used. These shall be in the language of the crew and in English for Port State Control inspections.

Waste management

● In an open loop EGCS the effluent may be treated and will be diluted before discharge to sea

● Closed loop EGCS require bleed off from the circulated wash-water which will, after treatment, be discharged to sea. However bleed-off rate can be low enough for this to be temporarily retained in holding tanks for later discharge to sea or landing ashore

Lloyd's Register 8

Effluent

IMO MEPC.259(68) Guidelines place emission limits on effluent discharge, providing the emission limit values are satisfied, they allow for EGCS to operate while discharging effluent to sea with no further restrictions – however there may be additional national / local restrictions

Page 9: Guidelines: Consumables and Waste Management · Guidelines: Consumables and Waste Management Closing the loop Mrs Yildiz Williams & Mr Andy Wright 12 December 2018

Waste management

● The waste generated from EGCS is categorised to be harmful to the marine environment therefore its incineration on board or discharge to sea is prohibited - no exceptions

Lloyd's Register 9

Sludge

Operations on board

● Crew engagement and training

● EGCS operation

● Exhaust & discharge water monitoring devices

● Maintenance and repair

● Surveys and Inspections

● Emergencies and non-standard operations

Lloyd's Register 10

Challenges on board

What happens when we have crew turn-around? How do we retain knowledge?

How to repair a part which is contaminated with various chemicals? Are there any procedures in place?

Page 11: Guidelines: Consumables and Waste Management · Guidelines: Consumables and Waste Management Closing the loop Mrs Yildiz Williams & Mr Andy Wright 12 December 2018

Port receptions

● The sludge skips to be stored securely within port area

● Collected by authorisedindustrial waste collectors licensed to dispose the contents in line with the national waste management regulations

Education, training and information

● All relevant parties should develop and undertake information and training programs suited for all stakeholders

● The materials should be prepared and presented in such a way that they relate to the relevant stakeholders involvement

Individual User Development

● Acting on feedback from the crew as to their everyday concerns

● Further bespoke training as required

● Information sharing between stakeholders

● Responsiveness and evolution of procedures on the basis of developments
