The U. S. and Vietnam
After World War II, the Communist leader of Vietnam, (1) , declared
Vietnam’s independence. The (2) were unwilling to give up their rich
Indochina colony; after a long, bloody war, they were defeated by the Communists
in 1954. The (3) divided Vietnam into Communist North Vietnam and non-
Communist South Vietnam. In 1955 (4) gained control of the government of
South Vietnam. Communist supporters in the South organized themselves as the
(5) , better known to Americans as the (6) . On (7) , South
Vietnamese army officers staged a (8) and assassinated Ngo Dinh Diem.
The Conflict Deepens
In 1964 Congress passed the (9) , which gave Johnson broad authority to
use American forces in Vietnam. About 180,000 soldiers were in Vietnam by the end
of 1965, and more than (10) by 1968. The United States unleashed an intense
bombing campaign called (11) to stop the flow of North Vietnamese troops
and equipment into South Vietnam. American troops found fighting difficult because
of (12) , muddy trails, and swampy rice paddies. The bombing of the
(13) and the North did not stop the constant flow of troops and equipment
south. The (14) missions killed thousands of enemy troops, but the troops
always seemed to be replaced. As American soldiers became frustrated and the war

A New Strategy
Under President Nixon college students could no longer obtain (1) ; only
19 year olds could be called for service in Vietnam; and draftees would be chosen by
lottery on the basis of their (2) . By the end of 1969, Nixon had developed his
plan of (3) , which called for the army of (4) to be more active in the
fighting. The bombing of enemy supply routes and hideouts in (5) and Laos
was kept secret from the American people.
Renewed Opposition at Home
In October 1969 more than 300,000 people took part in an (6) in
Washington, D.C. (7) represented the United States in the Paris peace talks.
The North Vietnamese believed that the (8) in the United States would
force the Americans to withdraw. Nixon’s decision to attack (9) in April 1970
outraged Congress. In May at a campus protest at (10) in Kent, Ohio, the
National Guard fired on student protesters, killing four. Violence flared again on
May 15 at (11) in Mississippi, where two students were shot and killed.
“Peace Is at Hand”
In the fall of 1972, North Vietnam and the United States reached a tentative
peace agreement. Negotiators signed a peace agreement on (12) . In early
1975 North Vietnamese forces closed in on (13) . The city finally fell to the
Communists in the early hours of (14) .
Legacy of the War
