Guide to waste recyclers on the Gold Coast 2

Recycling is only one way to deal with waste.Help the environment by practicing the three R’s:

Reduce waste • buy only what you need• avoid buying disposable goods• make fewer copies and print on both sides• use 100 per cent recycled printing paper• post announcements on bulletin boards or circulate copies

Reuse waste• reuse materials where possible• consider offering goods you no longer need for

second-hand use• reuse recovered resources such as demolition materials• use reusable envelopes for interoffice mail

Recycle waste• if waste cannot be used in its present form, try to recycle

Gold Coast City Council is able to provide commingledrecycling services to any commercial premise on theGold Coast.

This service allows businesses to combine plastics, steel,aluminium, cardboard and paper into one bin.These services can also be arranged for special events.

Advantages of Council’s commingled recycling service:• save space – all recycled items go in the one bin• save time and money (one supplier for all your recycling

needs)• no contracts• serviced up to two times a week• free training aids for staff

Items that can be recycled include:✔ clean cardboard, newspapers, magazines and cartons

✔ all rigid plastic containers (excluding styrofoam)

✔ aluminium cans, steel cans and aerosols

✔ glass jars and bottles

Smoke alarmsThere are two types of smoke alarms, older models have anionization detector while newer models have a photoelectricdetector. Smoke alarms containing an ionization detector havea very small amount of radioactive material. The emission is nomore than what is naturally produced. For disposal of a faultysmoke alarm wrap it in paper and place in the householdgarbage. Batteries should be disposed of separately.(see battery recycling).
