Type 2 diabetes, which is closely linked to lifestyle, is doubling every 10 years in Australia, and has now reached epidemic proportions around the world. Type 1 diabetes is increasing at about three per cent a year. Diabetes Australia-NSW figures, based on the number of diagnosed cases, show that nearly one million Australians have diabetes.

If current rates continue, the number of people with diabetes nationally will reach 4.2 million in five years*.
