Undergraduate Studies (Bachelor's Degrees, Diplomas, Certificates)

What is the post-secondary education system like?

Although each of the Provinces in Canada has the responsibility for education, Canadaseducation system is of remarkably high and uniform quality across the country. Canadianssupport a system of education that is accountable to Canadians and contributes tomaintaining Canadas high standard of living and quality of life. Universities, communitycolleges and university-colleges receive funding from various sources, such as the government, alumni support, tuition fees, research grants, contract fees, etc. Canada also has private institutesthat provide educational opportunities and operate without government funding.

The majority of post-secondary educational institutes in Canada offer studies in the Englishlanguage medium. These institutes are located in all provinces in Canada. French language

institutes can be found in Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia while Ontario has severalbilingual (French or English) institutes.

    Universities:

Canadas universities are internationally known for the quality of their teaching andresearch. They are of a consistently high quality, regardless of the location or the area of study.Canadian government-funded universities are members of the Association of Universities andColleges of Canada (AUCC) http://www.aucc.ca

Canadian universities offer 3 or 4-year Bachelor (undergraduate) degrees and Graduate

degrees at the Masters and Ph.D. levels. A four-year degree with a 3.0 GPA (75%) is usuallyrequired to continue to Graduate studies. A four-year degree is often called an Honors degree. Inthis case, Honors does not mean high grades. In the fourth year, research topics are usuallycovered preparing a student for Graduate studies.

The academic year is September to April with two 4-month semesters. In addition, someuniversities offer 2-month spring and 2-month summer semesters or a 4-month summersemester. While September is the normal entry date, some programs at some universities permita January and occasionally a May start. A transfer student may have more opportunity to start inJanuary or May.

Usually a student takes 5 courses per semester. Each course provides for 3 hours of

classroom study per week. However, some programs particularly in engineering and sciencerequire lab hours in addition to classroom hours. There is also a significant amount ofindependent study required in university programs. Most courses are counted as 3 credits. Some courses run two semesters which count as 6 credits. One semester (usually 5 subjects) willtotal 15 credits; 2 semesters are 30 credits, 3 years are 90 credits and 4 years are 120 credits. Allengineering programs and most business or science programs are 4-year programs (8-months).Many programs have core subjects required for the program and a wide variety of electives

    4

available to select during the degree (electives are your choice of subjects often selected fromdifferent fields of study). Some programs such as engineering have very few electives available.

Some universities have co-operative (co-op) programs that give you the advantage of workexperience before you graduate. Often the co-op starts after the first or second year and alternatesco-op semesters with study semesters or there will be one longer work period. Some co-opprograms are only available for Canadians. You are generally paid for the work terms but usuallyonly an amount to cover your expenses.

Transfer between universities (Canadian or international) is assessed on a subject by subject, credit by credit basis. See Admission Requirements for more information.

    Community Colleges

The community college responds to the training needs of Canadian business, industry, the

public service sectors and the educational needs of vocationally oriented secondary schoolgraduates and adults. Community colleges offer certificates and diplomas in 1, 2 or 3-yearprograms. Many programs offer industry certification programs. The community colleges inCanada belong to the Association of Community Colleges of Canada (ACCC)http://www.accc.ca

The normal year is September to May with two 4-1/2 month semesters. Some programs atsome institutions also have a summer semester. The normal entry date to a program isSeptember but some programs at some colleges permit a January or June start.

The number of courses required in each semester varies by program and by institution but

programs usually have required subjects rather than allowing for elective choices. There areusually more classroom hours required in college programs compared to university programs.Independent study is also required for most programs.

Community colleges offer co-operative (co-op) programs that give you the advantage of workexperience before you graduate. Often the co-op starts after the first or second year and alternatesco-op semesters with study semesters or there will be one longer work period. Some co-opprograms are only available for Canadians. Be sure to investigate this carefully. You aregenerally paid for the work terms but the amount will be enough to cover your expenses duringthat period.

Some colleges have transfer agreements with specified universities in particular programs. If

you wish to continue your studies, it is important to check the route for progression before youstart. Many students complete an undergraduate degree at a university and then attend a collegeprogram to get industry specific training.

Some community colleges offer graduate diploma programs requiring an undergraduatedegree or a first diploma for admission.

    University-Colleges

University-Colleges are a combination of an undergraduate university and a communitycollege of applied learning. A university-college allows the student to enter either a degreeprogram or a diploma program. Some diploma programs allow the student to move directly intothe third year of a degree program after the second year if the student attains sufficient grades.A University-College can also offer certificate and vocational programs. University-Colleges donot usually offer graduate degrees. The University-Colleges may belong to either the AUCC orACCC or both.

Private career colleges and training institutions

Private colleges (called "career colleges") and private training institutions are licensed tooperate and receive no government funding. Many career colleges and private training instituteshave been operating for numerous years and have standards that are readily accepted by

Canadian employers. Some institutes are run by the industries themselves or have a closeassociation to a specific industry or career field. Many career colleges and training institutesoffer industry certification programs in fields such as computer training or the oil and gasindustry. Some programs like beautician are only offered through private career colleges.

Some of these institutions have their own accrediting body, such as the National Associationof Career Colleges. http://www.nacc.ca

It is recommended that you check the credentials of career colleges or private traininginstitutes (i.e. how long they have been operating, if they have any accreditation, references,etc.). A license to operate in a province gives no guarantee of quality.

    When should I start?

Your career path starts at the beginning of secondary school when you start to make yoursubject choices. Make sure that you select subjects that meet your goals or leave your optionsflexible.

Applications to Canadian universities are made starting in January during the last year

of secondary schools studies. Final grades are not required to send with the applicationforms. Mid-term grades are sent when, and if, they are available and final grades are often sentafter admission to a post-secondary institution has already been determined. Assessment ofadmission is often based on Grade 9, 10 and 11 grades and the mid-term report of grade 12.Final grades are required when available but often admission has already been granted.

In Grade 11 or during the summer after Grade 11, you should be making a short list ofinstitutions so that you do not need to do all the work during your final year when you will haveyour studies and final exams to worry about.

  • 7/29/2019 Guide to Education in Canada

When you start your studies in Grade 12 or in your final year of secondary school, you can dothe final research to get the most recent information available. By the end of December in yourfinal year, you should have your application forms completed and ready to send at the beginningof January or before the application deadlines.

If you have missed the application deadline for a September entry, you will be considered forthe next intake which could be January (occasionally May) or for September of the next year.

What should I study? Choosing a career...

Not all students know what they want to study. If you would like to take an interest quiz andinvestigate some Canadian careers, use the web sites

    http://www.canlearn.ca

    http://ww.schoolfinder.com

If you are still not sure, perhaps you should choose a large institution where many programsare available. It is easier to change programs within a university or college than to changeinstitutions. An academic advisor will help you choose your courses to provide flexibility forchange.

You could take a General Arts or a General Science program, which will allow you to choosea number of different subjects and choose a major in the second year.

University or college programs will expose you to many more ideas and career options thanyou know now. Many students change programs after the first year.

If you are not sure you have high enough grades to get into a University perhaps you shouldconsider starting in a college. If you do well, you can go on to University from some programs oryou can get a diploma which will give you applied learning for a specific industry or job.

Do I meet the admission requirements?

Canadian universities and community colleges are selective for both Canadian andInternational students and accept only those students who have good grades. Some programshave a limited number of places available, which makes the entry-level grades higher. You arerequired to meet the language requirements, the academic requirements and the subject

requirements as outlined below. The minimum level of entry depends on the pool of applicantsin any year. You must apply to find out if you meet the minimum level in that year.

Once you have chosen the actual institutions you wish to attend, you should always

check their web sites for the specific requirements of those institutions.

Below is a general outline of what you might expect.

    7

    Language requirements:

For institutes that teach in the English language:

    TOEFL 550 (213) or 580 (237) or IELTS 6.5 or 7.0

Some institutions will accept good students without TOEFL and will provide ESL prior toprogram studies. Almost all institutions offer English language and academic preparation prior toentering a program.

For non-GCC citizens it is advisable to have a conditional acceptance to a program wherebyyou will show the visa officer you have sufficient grades, evidence that you are continuing yourstudies and funds to support your further studies. Not all universities will provide a conditionalacceptance. Large institutions are less likely to provide a conditional acceptance.

For institutes which teach in the French language:

No testing is required prior to arriving in Canada.

    Academic requirements:

Most universities and community colleges request grades from the last 3 years of secondaryschool. Mid-term grades and final grades are submitted when available.

A Secondary School Diploma after 12 years of study is required , plus:

    From US curriculum schools

    SAT I - 1000 or 1100 or 1200 scores

SAT II results insubjects required by the program. Some do not require SAT II.

Some institutions provide credits in some programs for AP level subjects.

    From UK curriculum schools

5 "O" levels and 3 "A" levels with A levels insubjects required by program

Some universities will accept 1 or 2 "A" levels.

Two "AS" level subjects may be substituted for an "A" level requirement.

Some colleges will accept good "O" level results but a Secondary School diploma (after 12years of studies) is usually required.

One year of secondary school completion after O levels is available in Canada.

From Indian, Pakistani, Iranian schools - 12 years of study

    8

Secondary School Diploma (10 + 2) by Certified Boards

Some universities require a year of university studies after grade 11 in the Iranian system.

    From Gulf local curriculum schools

Secondary School Diploma with above average results for university entrance and usuallyaverage results for college entrance.

Private schools with local or unaccredited curriculum

    SAT I is recommended

SAT II is recommended insubjects required by program

Subject requirements for universities and some colleges:

    For university Engineering programs:

Engineering programs require Mathematics (Calculus and Algebra and Geometry), Physics,Chemistry and English. All Canadian University engineering programs are accredited byprofessional bodies in both Canada and the United States.

For Science programs - 4 year programs

Science programs require Mathematics and two of Physics, Chemistry or Biology

Business administration (BBA) or commerce programs (BCom) - 4 year programs

BBA or BCom. programs require Math (Calculus) and English.

Medicine - 4 year program after 3 or 4 year Bachelor's Degree (7-8 years in total)

Most medical faculties also require a MCAT exam and a personal interview. There is no pre-Medicine specialization in Canada. Most students enter Medicine after completing a B.Sc. withhumanities electives. An academic advisor will assist in the selection of subjects to be taken atthe undergraduate level. Medicine is a very selective program and only students with extremelyhigh qualifications (approximately 9% of the applications) get accepted for the few seats that areavailable for international students.

    Law - 3 year program after 2, 3 or 4 years of a Bachelor's Degree (5-8 years in total)

Law also requires a LSAT exam taken in the final year of the undergraduate studies.

Dentistry - 4 year program after 30 university credits (2 years) (6 years in total)

There is no pre-dentistry program in Canada at the university level. Application would bemade to the Bachelor of Science program. Some colleges offer a pre-dentistry general arts and

    9

science. The DAT exam is required and is written during the second year of university orcollege.

Make sure you check the entry requirements at the institutions and for the program you

choose to be certain that you have met the minimum standards.

    Transfer students

Your secondary school transcripts and your transcripts (grades) from your current institutionwill be reviewed. Advance standing on a full semester basis is only provided if the receivinguniversity has a transfer agreement with your previous institution. This applies to Canadianinstitutions as well as international institutions.

In most cases, advanced standing is awarded by transferring credits on a subject by subjectbasis. Credits can be transferred if they match the subjects of the program at the receivinginstitution and if you have sufficient grades. Some electives are usually permitted. You willhave to provide the syllabus, hours in the classroom and labs and names of textbooks used from

all the post-secondary courses you wish to have assessed for transfer. A transfer student shouldtry to pick a program to maximize transfer credits.

Most universities require you to complete at least 60 higher level credits (2 years) at theirinstitution before you can earn their degree.

Where should I study? Making choices

Given the wide diversity that characterises Canadian universities and colleges, it is important

to get as much information as possible before making your choice. Some programs are limited toonly a few institutions and some programs are available at many. Since you do not have to worryabout the quality of the institutions in Canada, you may want to use other criteria to select a fewinstitutions that will meet all your needs.

Your selection process starts with a few basic, but important, questions:

    What institutions offer your program?

You will need a list of institutions, which offer your program. Use any of the following websites:

For University Degrees: http://www.aucc.ca - About Universities - Programs of Study

    For Colleges or Universities http://www.studyincanada.com

    10

    For Colleges or Universities http://www.schoolsinCanada.com

Do you want a large institution or a small one?

Large and medium sized universities or colleges have a broader range of programs. If you arenot sure about your choice of program, it is easier to change programs within a university than tochange institutions. Course credits are transferable to other universities or colleges but theywould have to match the program of the other institution. You may be faced with losing somecredits as well as picking up core subject that you may have missed.

Large universities or colleges are usually better known internationally. However, smalluniversities or colleges will often have a specialization where they are leaders. These institutionsare usually known internationally in the field of their specialization.

In small institutions the professors often get to know you better. You see the same studentsmore often on a smaller campus so you get to know them easier.

To search by size of the institution use: http://www.studyincanada.com

In what part of the country do you want to live? Do you want a large city or a small one?

Since all institutions in Canada offer relatively the same quality, where you live can be animportant consideration for individual comfort and success.

There are some regional differences in the weather. The weather on the west coast is a littlewarmer with a shorter winter season. The weather in the interior of Canada has four equal anddistinct seasons. Southern Ontario has a slightly more moderate winter. The weather on the eastcoast is more moderate, not getting quite as cold in the winter nor as hot in the summer. Nomatter where you live, your body will adjust to the change of climate and everything is heated inthe winter for your comfort. There are international students at all institutions across Canada.

To search by size of city: http://www.studyincanada.com

    For information about Canada http://www.canada.gc.ca

Do you want an institute that is a leader in a field of study?

To know which universities or colleges are the leaders in a specialized area, consider howmany universities or colleges are offering the program. If there are only a few, they all will beleaders. If there are many institutions offering your program, you can review the choices of

courses in the last two years of a program or look at the areas of research under Graduate Studiesor industry associations.

At the undergraduate level there is usually very little differences between the programs at theuniversities or colleges. The quality is very high at all Canadian institutions. As long as you area good student you can do graduate studies anywhere in the world after a Canadian degree.

Is cost a factor in your decision?

Each province and institution sets the tuition fees. The method that fees are assessed forinternational students does not in any way relate to quality. Generally the fees for institutionslocated in the smaller population areas of Canada are less expensive than the large populationcenters.

More information on the cost is under a section on financing your education.

Is the campus accommodation or facilities a factor in your decision?

You can investigate the type of housing available on the web sites of the institutions.

There are different recreational facilities, clubs and associations for sports, social activitiesand interests on different campuses.

There are varsity teams but not all institutions have all sports. If you are a gifted athlete in a

specific sport you should investigate the varsity sports programs offered at the institutions.

    Comparison shop....

After you have shortened your list of institutions, which offer your program and meet yourother needs, you need to get some specific information to choose the ones to which you willapply.

It is recommended to select at least one institution or program where the entry

requirements may be a little easier. This may be a smaller institution or a different program inthe institutions or a college instead of a university.

What does it cost? Financing your education.

Post secondary education is not free to Canadians. However, the government of Canadasubsidizes tuition to keep the cost for Canadians at a level many can afford. International

students pay higher fees called supplemental fees or differential fees. The exchange rate on theCanadian dollar, lower tuition fees and/or lower living expenses make Canada less expensivethan other developed countries such as Australia, France, United Kingdom and United States. The cost is not related to quality. Canadian institutions offer world class leading edge programs.

Tuition is charged per semester or per course. Tuition is usually quoted on the basis of anacademic year (2 semesters or 8 months). If you intend to stay for a spring or summer semesterthen the extra tuition and extra living expenses should be calculated for the extra months.

Generally, living expenses should be estimated at $1,000 Canadian per month for a singlestudent. This would include books, meals, accommodation, transportation, medical insuranceand a small amount of spending money. In most cases, the cost of accommodation on-campus isabout the same as the cost of accommodation off-campus for similar quality. The cities ofToronto and Vancouver could be slightly more expensive off-campus.

The immigration section assesses cost of living at $10,000 to cover 12 months of livingexpenses for a single student. An additional $4,000 will be required for a spouse ($5,400 for

Quebec) and an additional $3,000 for each dependent ($3,840 for Quebec). This amount includesfood, accommodation, transportation, medical insurance, books, clothing and sundries. Tuitionand other student fees are not included in this amount.

    Are scholarships available?

There are very few full scholarships available for the full four years. Usually, only a portionof the tuition is provided. Most first year scholarships are not renewable for the second year. However, some institutions have second year scholarships available to international students. There are very few scholarships available to students residing in the Gulf states on the basis ofneed. Canadian colleges and universities do not offer sports scholarships.

There are many first year scholarships for international students at Canadian institutionsawarded to exceptional students on the basis of merit. No application is usually required. A fewinstitutions have a scholarship section on their application forms.

Once you have narrowed your choice of institutions down you can search for scholarships onthe web sites of the institutions to see if there are any scholarships available to you and if youneed to apply. You could also search for institutions offering scholarships on the following websites:

    http://www.canlearn.ca

    http://www.schoolfinder.com

    Can I work and study?

Under new regulations, you will be permitted to work in Canada up to 20 hours per week afterthe first year of studies and during the summer break. The visa office does not consider work to

    14

be contributing to your ability to pay for your studies because you are not guaranteed to find ajob. The money you will earn will be a small amount.

You are permitted to work in Canada for one year after completion of your studies if you finda job related to the field of your studies and apply to extend your student authorization.

    When do I pay?

You pay an application fee when you submit your application to an institution. This is non-refundable. Tuition and other fees are usually payable at the beginning of each semester.Instructions will be sent by the institution. If the invoice is sent and payable before you receiveyour student authorization, the tuition and other fees are refundable if you do not receive yourauthorization. There may be a small administration fee charged for cancellation. You can open abank account when you arrive and have the money transferred to you when your tuition is due oryour parents can pay directly to the institution with a bank draft or credit card.

    Where will I live?Homestay, on-campus or off-campus....

It is recommended that students use a Homestay during English or French Language training. This offers the ability to be immersed in the English or French language environment.

It is recommended that undergraduate students stay on campus for the first year. Theadvantages are:

you will not have to worry about looking for a place to live

you will meet more people and make new friends

you will not have to look for basic furniture you will have access to several services (laundry room, TV lounges, telephone,

    computers)

you will save on travel time and expenses to and from campus

You must apply for on-campus residence housing. Being accepted into the institution does

not mean that you automatically have secured a residence.

You can also live off-campus. It is recommended that you try to live close to campus becauseoften classes are several hours apart or you may have only one class on one day that will maketransportation costs higher and diminish the motivation to attend classes.

    Home-stay

  • 7/29/2019 Guide to Education in Canada

    15/30

    15

Most English Language institutions will place you in a home stay that is appropriate for yourneeds. Canadians live in single-family homes or apartments. It is most common that the familyshares the bathrooms. The homes are kept clean and meals are healthy. Often both the husbandand wife are working. In some cases women or men are raising a family alone.

The cost is generally between $750 CAD to $1000 CAD per month for room and meals.

An application form is provided with registration at an institution. You are given somequestions to make sure that you are comfortable in the home where you are placed (i.e. do youlike pets, do you like small children, do you have allergies, etc.). If you are having problemswith the environment, you can ask to be moved to another.

    On-Campus

Each institution has different types of accommodation. Some of the types available include:

Male residences, female residences, co-ed residences (men and women are in the same

building but separated by floors or by wings), single or double rooms (triple rooms are notcommon), apartment style with several bedrooms attached to a common living-room and kitchen.

Bathrooms are most often shared but kept clean. Some residences have kitchen facilities andsome do not. Some residences require students to purchase a meal plan where you receive adebit card to eat on campus and occasionally some cards can be used at off-campus restaurants.

The costs of resident rooms and meal plans are on the web sites for each of the institutions.

Make sure you look for the application procedures for residence housing when you areresearching the web sites of the institutions. Most institutions will send you an application forresidence either when you apply to the institution or with your acceptance letter. When you areliving in residence, most institutions require you to purchase a meal plan.

    Off-campus

You can live in an apartment or house alone or shared. There is usually a supply of housingwithin commuting distance from the campus. You can rent a room in a house or a separateapartment in a house. Some accommodation is furnished and some is not. Used furniture isavailable at garage sales that are listed in the newspapers or "thrift" shops.

Some cities have a good supply of off campus housing and some do not. Some cities aremore expensive than others. These conditions may change from time to time. The size and

location of accommodation can vary the costs dramatically.

If you are renting accommodation that is specifically available to students, the cost isgenerally very close to the cost of residence. The landlords often charge on a per student basiswhen a group of students are sharing a house.

You must calculate the cost, including taxes, of rent, heating, electricity (hydro), telephone, cable TV, transportation and food in the monthly expenses. The cost of heat in the winter monthscan be quite high.

Most institutions have a housing office where the available accommodation is posted. Youcan look on the bulletin boards on campus. You can look in the newspapers. You can hire a realestate agent for a rental or purchase.

How do I apply to university or college?A step by step process....

The following offers a guideline in general. The specific process for each institution will beoutlined on their web sites. There may be differences between institutions but this will help giveyou an idea about the process.

When do I submit the applications?

Check the web sites of each institution for APPLICATION DEADLINES.

DO NOT WAIT UNTIL YOUR GRADES ARE RECEIVED. Submit the application andadvise that grades will be sent when available. An application received after the deadline willnot be considered. It may be delayed until the next entry date (January or September of the nextyear).

How do I get application forms for universities or colleges?

You can apply on-line if the institution has an on-line application form. You can request an

application form directly from the institution by e-mail, by fax or by mail (allow plenty of time).

How do I fill out the application forms?

International students use the "Student Authorization/Visa" category. Canadian citizensliving abroad can use the International Student application form but will indicate they are"Canadian Citizen" on the form. The children in a family in the immigration process will fill outan international student application form as a "Student Authorization" and will attend as aninternational student until the family lands in Canada. are counted as two choices). You are charged $95 for 3 choices and $25 for each additionalchoice. After the application has been received at the OUAC, each University will contact you. This may take a month or more. Some Universities have a more detailed application form thatthey will send to you and some will just request your grades (transcripts).

In the application process, supply only what is requested. If information is requested abouthobbies and interests make sure that you describe yourself (i.e. sports, talents, leadership, specialprojects at school, home or in the community, etc). There are no sports scholarships in Canadabut varsity teams may play a role in selecting from the applications of good students. Canadianinstitutions often look for students who will contribute more than just academic excellence.

If there is an application for Residence make sure you fill it out and send it. Some institutionssend a Residence application form with the letter of acceptance.

You could make a time line chart to make sure all documents are sent at the appropriate

    times.

Usually, the application form for international transfer students is the same one used by firstyear entry students. Deadlines to apply for transfer students may be different than for first yearstudents. Submit syllabus, hours of classes and textbook list of any subject you wish to beassessed for transfer credits.

When will I get a response?..... Patience is a virtue....

Each institution has their own routine for assessing applications. Some have an early orrolling admissions and accept students as their receive the application forms. Some wait until all

the applications have been received and assess everyone at the same time. Generally institutionsusing this method will be later providing their acceptances. If you do not have a letter ofacceptance by June 30 for a September entry and you expect to get one, you can start the studentauthorization application process. However, if you do not get a letter of acceptance, there is norefund for the Visa processing fee.

What if more than one institution offers me admission?

If you get more than one offer, you will have to choose one. Sometimes you are faced with adifficult decision. You can go back to the questions of why you chose the institutions in the firstplace to try to evaluate your priorities. You can be assured, however, no matter where you go,you will receive a quality education.

What do I do when I decide to accept an offer?

Notify the institution that you are accepting the position offered and notify any otherinstitutions that you will not be accepting their offer. You can accept the first offer and thendecide to accept another offer that has come later. Advise the first institution that you have

Canadians are from a very multicultural background. There will be other students withyour culture. You will not feel different.

What is the climate like and what do I wear?

There are four distinct seasons - Spring (cool with rainy periods), Summer (warm or hot anddry or a small amount of rain), Fall (cooler with some rain) and Winter (cold and dry with somerain or snow). Your body adjusts to the changes and buildings, cars, buses, etc. are heated foryour comfort in the winter. There is winter snow everywhere in Canada but it permits you toenjoy some great outdoor activities such as ice skating, sledding, skiing or just walking in thewhite environment.

In September, a light jacket would be required. Students wear jeans, T-shirts and sweaters.Winter clothes are cheaper in Canada.

    What if I become ill?

You must have health insurance before you leave for Canada to cover you until you canobtain medical coverage in Canada. Canada has a world class health care system. The institutions

will provide you with information of how to obtain health insurance. Health insurance is veryreasonable in cost. It will cover all costs of required medical care. Universities and Collegeshave clinics on campus.

    Graduate Studies and Professional Development

Canadian universities are working on leading edge research in many different fields often inco-operation with other leading institutions in the world. Professional development is available

at both universities and colleges in Canada.

What is the Canadian graduate degree system like?

Graduate studies at universities in Canada usually combine compulsory courses with researchwork and a thesis although there are some Master's programs which are strictly course based andsome that are entirely thesis based. The programs vary in length from one year up to six years tocomplete a research study. In some cases a Ph.D. can be combined with the Master's Degree atthe discretion of the university.

Where should I study? Finding the institutions offering the program for you...

Search the following databases for Graduate Studies:

Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada http://www.aucc.ca

    Graduate Business and Management programs

Graduate Computer Science and Engineering programs

Professional development programs would be listed either through the Graduate BusinessDepartments under Executive Development or under their Continuing Education Departmentsfor programs in other specializations. There is no database for this kind of search but you could

search the institutions in the larger cities in Canada and you will find a wide variety of selection.Courses in very specialized professions may also be found by contacting the Canadianprofessional association in your field.

    What are the entry requirements?

Each University sets their own admission requirements and you should check the web sitesof the Universities under Graduate Studies Admissions. The following is a general guideline:

For English language universities, Language Proficiency: TOEFL 550 (213), 580 (237) or 600(250) depending on the institution or IELTS 6.5 or 7.0. For French language universities:Testing is done in Canada.

A Masters degree generally requires an undergraduate degree from a recognized universitywith a 3.0 minimum Grade Point Average (GPA). A Ph.D. requires a Masters Degree from arecognized university. It is entirely up to the Canadian institution to determine if your firstdegree or second degree is acceptable for admission.

For Post-Graduate Medicine, a Medical Diploma from a recognized university and resultsfrom the Canadian Medical Evaluating Exam (CMEE) are required before an application can bemade. Information about the CMEE is available on the web site of the Medical Council ofCanada http://www.mcc.ca

MBA programs generally require a GMAT. Some Engineering programs require a GRE.

    What does it cost?

Tuition for graduate studies varies dramatically by institution and by program. Graduatestudies are often very low cost because the institute receives research grants. Some institutionsdo not charge higher tuition for international students at the Graduate level. There are fullscholarships available for graduate studies, including living costs. Graduate students are oftenused as teaching assistants. Programs that have higher tuition are usually MBA programs orpost-graduate professional programs such as medicine or dentistry.

    Where will I live?

Many institutions have residences for graduate students, including apartment style residences

for married students with families. There is usually a housing office on campus where you canfind appropriate accommodation off-campus or you can use local real estate agents to buy or rentapartments or houses.

How do I apply? Very important application advice....

The web sites of each of the institutions will have instructions for applying including, application deadlines, application procedures, etc. Make sure you look under Graduate Studiesbecause often application procedures and deadlines are different than for undergraduateprograms. If the answer to your question is on the internet, it is unlikely that the university willrespond to your question. You can usually request an application package either on line, by faxor by mail.

Some universities will send graduate application forms to everyone and others are selective insending out application packages. You need to write the appropriate letter of request. Donot attach a CV to an E-mail unless they have instructed you to do so.

    Student Authorization and Visit Visa

    What is a student authorization?

A student authorization permits you to go to Canada to study. All students who are notCanadian Citizens or permanent residents must have a student authorization to study in

Canada. This includes US citizens, US green card holders, British citizens, etc.

The Visa Office in Abu Dhabi will issue a letter stating that you have been granted permissionto obtain a Student Authorization. You will present this letter together with your Letter ofAcceptance to the Visa Officer at the airport or entry point to Canada. It is advisable to alsohave copies of the other documentation you submitted in Abu Dhabi in case you are asked formore information. The Visa Officer in Canada will issue the actual document called a "Student

Authorization". This should be kept with your passport at all times. It is recommended that youtake two photocopies of the Student Authorization and your passport (one to keep in Canada andone to keep in your home outside Canada) just in case you lose your original documents. It willbe easier to replace them if you have a copy.

A student authorization is required for language studies for more than 3 months, to attendprimary or secondary school, college, university, or any training institute where a credit orcertificate is issued at the completion. If you are going only as an observer or for languagestudies for a period of 12 weeks or less, you will only need a visit visa.

A student authorization is usually given for the duration of your studies but is sometimes

given on a year to year basis. If you have completed one part of your studies and will becontinuing, you can extend your student authorization from within Canada. You can get theapplication from the international student services office. You should apply at least two monthsbefore your student authorization is due to expire.

    28

A single entry visit visa permits you to enter Canada once and a multiple entry visit visapermits you to leave and re-enter Canada many times. If you are from a country requiring a visitvisa to enter Canada, you will receive a visit visa in your passport automatically with yourStudent Authorization approval letter. You do not have to make a separate application and thereis no extra fee.

A multiple entry visit visa is usually granted for the duration of the Student Authorizationor for the duration of your passport whichever expires sooner. If your visit visa expireswhile you are in Canada, the next time you leave Canada (including visiting the USA) you willneed to apply for a new visit visa. You must be outside Canada to apply for a new visit visa. When you are outside Canada, do not wait until the last minute to get a new visit visa.

Check the expiry date to be prepared.

    What is a CAQ?

If you will be studying at an institute located in Quebec, you must apply for a CAQ fromQuebec Immigration in addition to the Student Authorization. The institute in Quebec will send

If you are late receiving a Letter of Acceptance and have an e-mail or fax notifyingyou that you have been accepted you can apply for your Student Authorization.

The Visa Section does not answer questions with regard to the processing time. Theywill make every effort to get you to Canada on time. If your application has been at the VisaSection for more than 5 weeks, you can fax a polite request to check on the status. Yourapplication may be missing documents that they wish you to submit which could cause theprocess to be slower. The processing time can vary from 2 days to 2 months so DO NOTDELAY in starting your application process.
