• Provide students and groups with educational counseling

• Work with students, including those with academic and social development problems and those with special needs

• Help students evaluate their abilities, interests, talents, and personality characteristics

• Use interviews, counseling sessions, interest and aptitude assessment tests, and other methods

• Provide play therapy and art therapy for students who cannot disclose in the counseling sessions

• Observe younger children during classroom and play activities

• Confer with teachers and parents to evaluate the children’s strengths, problems, or special needs

• Regularly visits classrooms to teach students how to get along with others, following school rules, safety, and others

Classroom Guidance

• Invite students who share common concerns to meet for a few sessions

Small Group Counseling

• Available to talk with a student privately of the concern is very private and does not work well with groups or with a presence of a parent

Individual Counseling

• If children cannot express with words, they can express their thoughts and feelings through play and/or art session(s)

Confidentiality

Minor students should be informed of the counselor’s general obligation to disclose information to acquiring parents prior to

forming the counseling relationship.

Guidance should be limited to the areas supported by school policy.

When working with minors, counselors should encourage family involvement when possible.

Parents of minors have the right for information in most circumstances.

Confidentiality

Legal counsel should be sought when a guidance counselor encounters a “grey area.”

The safety of students and the safety of the third parties should paramount in the counselor’s consideration.

Abuse will always be reported

Threats of injury to third parties will be reported.

4. Maintenance of Records. Counselors maintain records in sufficient detail to track the sequence and nature of professional services rendered and consistent with any legal, regulatory, agency, or institutional requirement. They secure the safety of such records and, create, maintain, transfer, and dispose of them in a manner compliant with the requirements of confidentiality and other articles of this Code of Ethics.

2. Confidentiality. The counselor must preserve and safeguard the confidentiality of the clients except:

2.1 When disclosure is required to prevent clear and imminent danger to the client or others;

2.2 When legal requirements demand that confidential matter be revealed;
