Located in the south of the Region of Valencia, the city of Alicante lies in the centre of the bay of the samename, flanked by the capes Cabo La Huerta to the north and Santa Pola to the south. With around 315,000inhabitants and a municipal area of 201.3 km2, Alicante is the second largest city in the Region of Valenciaand the capital of the province of Alicante. The city's economy is based on industry, business and theservice sectors.

Lapped by the Mediterranean Sea, it has an exceptional climate that is characterised by mild winters andhot summers, with an average annual temperature of over 18ºC and around 3,000 hours of sunshine peryear.

El Altet International Airport. The airport is only 12 km from the city centre. Located between Alicante andElche, it can be reached via the A7 and the N332 roads.It is one of the largest airports in the country and has direct links with 14 destinations in Spain, 59 in theEuropean Union and 12 destinations outside the EU, with flights to a total of 20 different countries.Within Spain, El Altet Airport has direct flights to Asturias, Barcelona, Bilbao, Ibiza, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria,Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, San Sebastian, Santander, Santiago de Compostela, Seville, Tenerife Northand South and Zaragoza and international destinations with direct flights to and from Alicante include Berlin,Cologne, Frankfurt, Vienna, Brussels, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin, Reykjavik, Oslo,Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, London, Manchester, Moscow, Stockholm, Geneva, Monastir, Oran and Bogota,amongst others.The C6 bus service connects the airport with the city and runs every 40 minutes. The port links Alicante to several Mediterranean and African cities by sea thanks to a number of regularshipping routes. The port of Alicante welcomes thousands of tourists each year off the numerous cruise shipsand large leisure craft that put in at its harbour.At the port, you can hire a leisure craft to travel up and down the beautiful Alicante coastline.

Alicante has a modern railway network and comfortable Altaria and Euromed trains run frequently to andfrom the city. The popularly named “Trenet” joins Alicante with the province's main towns along its northerncoast and is also an interesting tourist attraction in itself due to the beautiful places through which it passes.

The Central Bus Station is where Alicante links up with the rest of the towns in the province, the mainSpanish cities and European capitals, as well as Morocco. The terminus is located in the heart of thecity centre.

By road, Alicante can be reached via the AP 7-E 15 motorway, which crosses the province from the southwest tothe northeast. Towards the southwest, it connects the province with Murcia and Andalusia, while to the northeastit links up with Valencia, Catalonia and France. A branch of this motorway joins up with Cartagena, while accesscan be gained to the rest of the Spanish provinces along the A-31 road, which links up with Madrid.

The first signs of Alicante's existence were found in the Cova del Fum in Fontcalent and date back to the 3rdmillennium B.C. These settlements sprung up due to the geography of the area where the city would later bebuilt, with natural pathways converging by the sea and the protection of afforded by several hills, which wasparticularly useful for defence. As an urban centre in the strictest sense, we must travel back to 4 B.C. at Tossalde Manises to locate the Iberian colony that would later become the Roman city known as Lucentum.

After the Roman period came Arab domination, with the urban settlement moving to the slopes of Mount Benacantilfor defensive purposes. Here the Vila Vella was created, which later became a maritime supply point where majortrading would be carried out.

In 1247, the Vila Vella was to give way to the Vila Nova following the conquest for Castileby Prince Alfonso, who would later become Alfonso X the Wise. In 1296, Jaime II definitivelyincorporated the town of Alicante into the Kingdom of Valencia and, two centuries later,in 1490, Ferdinand the Catholic granted Alicante status as a city.

The 19th century continued to be a period of great change for the city, led by the arrivalof the railway with the Alicante-Madrid line. Progress steamed ahead with the inaugurationof street lighting and new urban planning which was embodied in the demolition of the citywalls and the creation of new districts.

The modernisation of the city continued in the 20th century when the electric tramcarwas introduced and development of the port facilities increased. This century alsosaw the birth of the Hogueras de San Juan festivals and intense activity in thesecondary and tertiary sectors, along with the consolidation of Alicante as aservice centre. It was, however, tourism that led to the city's growth andexpansion, making it what it is today. The last quarter of the twentiethcentury recorded some historic milestones for Alicante, such asthe first visit from King Juan Carlos I in 1976 and the inaugurationof the University of Alicante in 1979. For its part, the open, pro-Europe nature of the city was confirmed with the opening of the Headquarters of the Officeof Harmonization for the Internal Market (OAMI) in 1993. Around about the same time,the 500th anniversary of Alicante's city status was celebrated in 1990 and the arrival ofthe Santa Faz holy relic in 1989.

TOWN HALL_ _ This is an 18th century baroque palace built on the site of the former Casa de la Ciudad.The building is an unusual structure, flanked by a tower at either end, divided into three stories and finishedoff with a balustrade. Inside, its most striking rooms are the famous Blue Room, the Council Chamber and achapel where mass can be given due to a Papal Bull signed in 1775 by Pope Pius VI.

Inside the building is the reference point from which the height of any place in Spain above sea level ismeasured. This reference point, known as cota cero, is located on the first step of the main staircase of thebuilding.

In the basement of the Town Hall's adjoining building, which also houses some local council offices, is theexhibition “La ciudad descubierta” (The city uncovered), with interesting archaeological remains that have beenpreserved from mediaeval times to the modern day.

PROVINCIAL COUNCIL_ _ The headquarters of the Alicante Provincial Council are located in aneoclassical style palace which was designed by the architect Juan Vidal Ramos in 1928. The buildingcorresponds to a generic type of palace with an Italian influence and the baroquism of the Bourbon palacesof Madrid.It also has a “Jardín de las Celebridades”, a garden containing classical monuments in honour of severalfamous figures from Alicante.

SAN NICHOLAS CO-CATHEDRAL_ _ This building in the Herrerian Renaissance style is located inthe city's old quarter and is one of the most emblematic buildings in the quarter.It is a Latin-cross plan church with short arms and communicating side chapels. Inside you can see the 15thcentury cloister with two baroque doors, the altar, the 18th century Communion Chapel and the 45-metrehigh blue dome. The interior decoration is a clear example of Spanish illusionistic style from the first half of the18th century.

SANTA BÁRBARA CASTLE _ _ Located at a height of 166 metres on Mount Benacantil, this is a fortresswith an enormous strategic value. It was given the name Santa Bárbara because it was on her feast day, 4thDecember, in 1248, that it was taken from the Arabs by Prince Alfonso of Castile, the future King Alfonso XThe Wise. Santa Bárbara Castle is divided into three separate precincts. The first of these is known as La Torretaand it contains the old Torre del Homenaje, which houses the oldest remains of the fortress. The middle precinctdates from 1580: Salón Felipe II, the former Corps opposite the large inner ward, Santa Bárbara chapel and theQueen's Bastion, amongst others. The third precinct is the lowest and dates back to the 18th century; it is herethat the battlement known as the Revellín del Bon Repós can be found. Its interior also hosts exhibitions.

The castle can be reached by a lift that has been excavated out of the rock, opposite El Postiguet beach,or by a road that runs between the pine groves on the northern slope of Mount Benacantil and starts in CalleVázquez de Mella. On its slope is La Ereta Park, from which there are spectacular views of the city andaccess to the old quarter.

SANTA MARÍA BASILICA _ _ The origins of the Basilica date back to the 14th century, as it was builton the site of the Great Mosque. It has a single nave, without a cross shape, with side chapels located betweenthe buttresses and a total of six bays. It has a series of rooms and elements that have been added over timeto the basic construction, among which are the 18th century Rococo high altar, the 16th century baptismal fontand the 1653 Valencian baroque organ. Since the beginning of the 1990's various restoration projects havetaken place in the building.

UNIVERSITY OF ALICANTE MUSEUM (MUA)_ _ This museum, located on the University of Alicantecampus, in the nearby town of San Vicente del Raspeig, is dedicated to Contemporary Art, although from aperspective that centres more specifically on the parameters of research, production, conservation, documentation,distribution and education about contemporary art rather than in the setting up of a collection in the strictestsense and in its permanent exhibition, as is the case for most museums.

LUCENTUM ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE_ _ Just over 3 kilometres from the city centre are importantarchaeological remains in El Tossal de Manises. These remains date from the Ibero-Roman period andare the site of the Roman city of Lucentum, ancient Alicante, which was built over an Iberian settlement.This is one of the largest archaeological sites in the Region of Valencia.

SANTA FAZ MONASTERY _ _ In the baroque style and with a pyramid-shaped dome, this monasteryis five kilometres from the city centre. Inside, there is a relic brought from the Vatican in the 15th centurywhich, according to popular tradition, is the veil with which Veronica wiped the blood from Jesus' face on theway to the Calvary. Every year, thousands of people head there on a pilgrimage from Alicante on the secondThursday after Easter Sunday, and it is one of the city's most traditional local fiestas. Given its status as apilgrimage church, there is a chapel behind the main altarpiece where the relic of the Holy Veil is kept.

ALICANTE CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM (MACA) _ _ This is one of the city's most importantcultural projects. The MACA provides a definitive solution to the lack of space in the Asegurada Museum for the20th Century Art Collection and new spaces for the permanent exhibition of the city's own contemporary artcollections.Located in Alicante's old quarter, it opens onto the square where the magnificent Santa María Church can befound. The new MACA building will incorporate the Casa de La Asegurada, one of the finest examples of Valencianbarroque architecture.The MACA is currently under construction.

LAS AGUSTINAS CONVENT_ _ Built in the 18th century this convent was used as a Jesuit residence.Located in the city's old quarter, its interior contains a statue of the Virgen de la Soledad, the oldest religious imagein the Alicante Holy Week processions.

Alicante's most emblematic features thanks to the quality of its sand, its palm tree lined promenade and thebeautiful views over the bay. SAN JUAN BEACH_ _This is the most famous beach in Alicante and has a recently restored seafrontpromenade. To the north of the city, it runs between Cabo de la Huerta and Muchavista de Campello Beach.It has numerous facilities for bathers and is easily reached by car, tram and bus routes 21 and 22, amongstothers. In summer, it also has an educational leisure area for the mentally handicapped and an access pointfor the physically disabled, next to the Red Cross post 2, as well as a tourist information office.

SALADAR-URBANOVA BEACH_ _Located at the town's southern limits, 5 kilometres from the citycentre, this is an uncrowded area that is quiet and boasts several kilometres of golden sand where numerousfacilities are available for bathers and visitors: lifeguards, seafront promenade, shops and restaurants andsignposted areas for nudists. In summer, it also has an educational leisure area for the mentally handicappedand an access point for the physically disabled. It can be accessed by car and the number 27 bus route.

is not just one island, it is in fact a small archipielago made up of the islets La Cantera, La Galera and La Nao.It measures approximately 1,800 m long and 400 m wide.

Its coasts were once home to a Berber pirate camp and in the 18th century, King Carlos III ordered a town tobe built there to house several Genoese families who had been rescued from the Tunisian port of Tabarka.

Its town centre is surrounded by walls that form an ensemble which has been declared a Property of CulturalInterest.

Its waters have been declared a Mediterranean Marine Reserve due to their excellent quality and thebiodiversity of their fauna and flora, and because they are a clear example of Mediterranean marine communities.

The island can be accessed by the boats that leave from the wharfs in the port of Alicante opposite theExplanada. Once they have arrived on the island, visitors can spend time at the coves and beaches withtransparent waters and a picturesque seaside town where they can taste the best produce fromthe sea, including fish and seafood based rice dishes, aswell as the famous “caldero”, a fish and rice dish servedwith stock.

A path that runs around the island invites visitors to takea leisurely stroll to appreciate the scenery and try tospot the variety of marine birds that inhabit thisisland.

EXPLANADA DE ESPAÑA_ _This is one of the city's emblems. It runs parallel to one of the portwharfs and is lined on both sides with rows of palm trees giving it a truly Mediterranean feel. The floor isdecorated with 6,600,000 tricolour marble tiles forming a design with a characteristic wave effect mosaic. Alongthe sea front there are numerous bars, cafes, ice-cream parlours and restaurants to make the visit and the strollalong it more pleasant, as well as an auditorium where the Municipal Symphonic band offers open air concertsall year round.

LA ERETA PARK_ _This park is located on the slopes of Mount Benacantil at the foot of the SantaBárbara Castle, opposite El Postiguet beach. From here you can enjoy unbeatable views of the city and followan interesting route from the summit down to the city's old quarter. There is an exhibition room intended fordisplaying plastic arts, with a particular focus on promoting artists and creators of contemporary art. The parkalso has a café and there is also a restaurant.

EL PALMERAL PARK_ _This is one of the most spectacular parks in the city, formed by a wooded areacontaining palm trees, ponds, lakes and artificial streams. It is on the Alicante main road heading towards Elcheand Cartagena. It contains sports facilities and a cross-country cycling track, as well as a pavilion where aregular programme of events is scheduled including activities, children's theatre, puppet shows, etc., mainlyaimed at children and families.

PASEITO RAMIRO_ _Recently renovated, this area is close to El Postiguet beach. Underneath,remains have been found of the walls that formerly surrounded the city, part of which can be seen in thispark.

PANTEÓN DE QUIJANO_ _Just a few metres away from the Bullring, this park has an unmistakablyromantic atmosphere and centenary trees that enhance such an ambience. There is a memorial monument withan obelisk in memory of Governor Trino González de Quijano.

CANALEJAS_ _This is another of the most traditional open spaces in Alicante. It begins at the end ofthe Explanada and has spectacular lush vegetation including several hundred-year old rubber plants measuring20 metres high. Its entrances are flanked by sculptures of lions and dogs and there is a statue of the Alicantewriter, Carlos Arniches.

PLAZA DE GABRIEL MIRÓ_ _This square honours the Alicante writer of the same name. Just a fewmetres from the Explanada and the seafront promenade, it has a monument in the form of a fountain andcentenary trees with luxuriant foliage, creating a relaxed, pleasant atmosphere.

PORTAL DEL ELCHE_ _This round park located just off the Rambla avenue retains an unmistakably19th century atmosphere due to the kiosk situated within it, which imitates those of the period.

CARNIVAL. The ceremony of Don Carnal and Doña Cuaresma is played out; these festivities also include “sábado ramblero”with a parade of people in fancy dress and open air music along with the wake and the burial of the sardine. These fiestasare very popular in the city of Alicante.

PORRAT DE SANT ANTONI. Day on which the feast of Saint Anthony is celebrated. He is the saint after whom apopular district of the city is named and there is a procession with the statue of the saint, as well as street performers,blessing of animals and a raffle with a suckling pig as first prize.

sHOLY WEEK. Around thirty brotherhoods and guilds participate in Holy Week. It begins on Palm Sunday and theentire week is taken up with processions, with one of the most moving and popular being the Holy Wednesday processionwhich runs through the steep, narrow streets of the Santa Cruz district, with the statues of Christ Captured, ChristDying, the Descent from the Cross and the Virgin Dolorosa. Maundy Thursday sees the Silent Procession, where themost valuable statues involved in Alicante's Holy Week appear, such as the “Cristo de la Buena Muerte” (Bussi, 18thcentury) and the “Virgen de las Angustias” (Salzillo, 18th century). On Good Friday, the Veronica procession takes placealong the Explanada and on Easter Sunday is “El Encuentro”.

SANTA FAZ. On this day, a traditional popular pilgrimage takes place, known as “La Peregrina”, to the Santa Fazmonastery which houses the sacred veil which, according to tradition, is imprinted with the face of Jesus.

MOORS AND CHRISTIANS IN THE SAN BLAS DISTRICT. At this time of year, this popular district of Alicanteholds its spectacular Moors and Christians festival. It includes all of the typical elements of such a festival: entrances(splendid parades of the groups dressed in period costume), diplomatic missions, displays of strength and retreats,amongst others.

HOGUERAS DE SAN JUAN. Fiesta of International Tourist Interest that plunges the city into several days of joy andcelebrations centred around its main features which include acts such as the Pregón (Official Opening), the “Plantà” (themounting of the statues which will later be burnt to the ground), the Ninot Parade, processions and street performers inthe various districts and the main event on the day of the “Burning” on 24 June, where the flames consume the giantbonfires accompanied by the popular “banyà”.

During these days, the traditional San Juan bullfighting festival also takes place. After the main events of the fiesta thereis then a firework competition on Cocó Beach, at the end of El Postiguet, which lasts until Saint Peter's day (28th June).

Alicante Golf Course.

The city of Alicante has a wide range of sports facilities, some of which have welcomed outstandinginternational events such as a qualifying round of the Eurobasket 2007 and a Davis Cup semi-final in2004. Alicante has also been the departure point for the 2002 and 2007 Tall Ships Regatta (formerly theCutty Sark), it has hosted the World Offshore Championships, the 17th World Rhythmic GymnasticChampionships and the 1982 Football World Cup, amongst others. Alicante has also been namedas the departure port for the round the world regatta known as the Volvo Ocean Race, in October2008. The city usually welcomes numerous top sportspeople from all over Europe who come hereto make the most of the city's excellent climatic conditions to improve their performance in allkinds of open air sports. Consequently and together with the city's tradition and strength insports such as handball or basketball, Alicante has great facilities for practising many differentsports.

Besides those located in the different districts of the city, most of these sports facilitiesare concentrated in the Mount Tossal area, where the José Rico Pérez Football Stadium,the Pitiu Rochel Central Municipal Sports Pavilion, the Rafael Pastor Micó MunicipalPavilion, the Technical Skills Centre, the Mount Tossal Swimming Pool Complex,the Ciudad Deportiva and the multipurpose former horse-racing track can all befound.

The city of Alicante is also famous for all types of water sports and activities,such as sailing, jet-skiing, windsurfing and boat chartering. There is a wideselection of golf courses including the fine 18-hole courses Alicante Golf,located in Playa de San Juan, and El Plantío, near Alicante airport. Thereare also another two 18-hole courses located very near to the city.

food and drinkLogically, as a Mediterranean city, Alicante has a wide variety of food based on the Mediterranean diet. Riceand produce from the Mediterranean and the land are the main ingredients in rice dishes such as arroz abanda, el arroz a la alicantina, el caldero and arroz caldoso, with fish as a typical accompaniment. Thepopular olleta represents the best example of an Alicante stew, based on vegetables and pulses.

Before sitting down at the table, nothing better to whet the appetite than a few traditional “tapas” and“montaditos”, small sandwiches originating from Alicante which combine meat and cooked meats withvegetables. To accompany these appetisers, try paloma, a traditional drink made with dry aniseed liqueur andvery cold water or cantabria, a herb liqueur.

One of the most typical local dishes is undoubtedly esmorzaret alacantí, made with salted sardines, friedeggs and dried red peppers, and coca amb tonyina, which is a tasty tuna pastry. Other types of “coca” fromAlicante are coca boba (sweet), molletes (topped with large crumbs) and tomato and sardine pastry.

Wine is essential as an accompaniment to local dishes when eating Alicante style. There are good examplesin the magnificent wines from the province, such as double-fermented reds, rosés and young white winesmade from Monastrell, Vermeta and Garnatxa grapes, or Fondillón, which is a famous Alicante aged wine.

shoppingThe main shopping centres in the city are represented by the shops on Maisonnave avenue and its surroundingstreets and in the area between Calle Alfonso X El Sabio and Calle Gerona. In both areas, you can findshopping centres and a wide range of boutiques, shoe shops and shops specialising in different goods to suitand satisfy all tastes.

Shops selling typical local products can also be found on the Avenida Alfonso X El Sabio, Calle Mayor inthe old quarter, Calle Gerona and in other places around the city centre.

There are also shopping complexes located around the city that have a great variety of shops offering anythingfrom clothes, shoes and accessories to food, and they all have multicinema screens. The main shoppingcomplexes of this type are Puerta de Alicante, Panoramis, Plaza Mar 2, Gran Vía, Vistahermosa and Torre Golf.

This shopping experience is complemented by the street vendors selling handmade goods on the Explanadaand the open air markets that take place around the city, (Calle Teulada, Benalúa, Carolinas and Babel) onThursday and Saturday mornings and the Central Market that is open from Monday to Saturday. On Sundaythere is an open air market opposite the Town Hall for stamp and antique collectors.
