Our first project..Earth Hour!On the 23 March, at 8.30pm, hundreds of millions of individuals,

landmarks, and businesses across the globe will be plunging into darkness to show they want to help creating a better future for our planet.

WWF’s Earth Hour is a simple idea that has become a global phenomenon, with hundreds of millions of people turning off their lights at the same time.

Last year hundreds of millions of people and landmarks from Big Ben and Buckingham Palace in London to the India Gate in New Delhi, and even as

far as The Sydney Opera House, took part.

Earth Hour from space!

• This year the Earth Hour message has spread even further than WWF could have imagined, and made it into space! For the first time ever the events of Earth Hour 2012 will be watched by the International Space Station. Andre Kuipers (ESA astronaut and WWF ambassador) has told us “there is no better way to raise awareness for the future of the most beautiful planet in the universe!” we couldn’t agree more! We look forward to hearing Andre’s commentary of his experience of Earth Hour, and seeing the photos via the European Space Agency.

Letter to the Prime Minister!

• Poems, posters, letters, drawings on the theme of We love the power of nature – the wind, the sun, the sea.

• This year, we’re focusing on renewable energy – because if we are to protect people and nature from the worst impacts of climate change – we need to wean ourselves off climate-polluting fossils fuels and onto the clean, green energy available in the wind, the waves and the sun.

Renewable energy ideas• Go for a walk in the surf and celebrate the power of

the waves • Tell ghost stories round a wood burning stove • Make an origami wind turbine and watch the wind blow • Donate to a solar school • Make a kite and then go fly it by starlight • Tell a friend how great renewable energy is • Go visit a friend with solar panels and have a “switch

on party” • Blow bubbles in your back yard and see how far the

wind takes them • Switch to a green energy tariff • Share your love for nature on Facebook • Find an ancient tree and celebrate it being powered

by the sun • Build a solar oven to make lunch with for a summer’s

picnic

If everyone used natural resources and generated carbon emissions at the rate we do in the UK we would need three planets to support us. The way we live is leading to environmental threats such as climate change, species extinction, deforestation, water shortages and the collapse of fisheries. WWF’s One Planet Future Campaign is working to help people live a good quality of life within the earth’s capacity.
