Why Geothermal?
Clean, renewable, efficient energy obtained from
beneath the earth’s surface.

Why Geothermal?
Cost Benefits:•30-70% annual energy savings•Lower operating cost•Re-use of waste heat•Reduced cost of emissions control•Rebates, grants, tax incentives
Environmental Benefits:•Use of renewable energy source•One of the most efficient heating and cooling solutions available•No reliance on fossil fuels•Eliminates CO health threats•Reduced CO2 emissions

Types of geothermal well systems
Closed LoopOpen Loop / Standing Column WellDirect Exchange / Open Diffusion

Closed Loop
• Most common system• Wells typically installed 400’ to 500’ deep• Average tonnage = 150ft/ton•Contains environmentally safe water-antifreeze mix•Very little maintenance once installed•Well system not affected by environmental conditions, i.e. contamination•Wells not generally affected local geological conditions.•State & federal tax credits and/or grants typically apply.
•Examples of Closed Loop Systems:
•King Point Maritime Academy, NY•Internal Revenue Service buildings, Andover, MA•Many military bases through the U.S.

Open Loop / Standing Column Well
•Usually installed where space is limited•Not applicable at all sites due to geological conditions (need bedrock)•Average tonnage = 100ft/ton (greater with bleed, approx. 10% gain)•More maintenance concerns – submersible pumps, water quality in wells, etc.•State & federal tax credits and/or grants typically apply.
•Examples:
•Harvard University, MA•Yale University, CT•Trinity Church, Boston, MA

Direct Exchange / Open Diffusion
GS Environmental and Groundwater Associates
GSEGAHARRIS MILLER MILLER & HANSON INC.
Direct Exchange / Open Diffusion
1) A deep production well is drilled to an underground heat source
2) The pressurized steam or hot water is released and piped to a power plant, where its force turns a turbine
• Some advantages of geothermal energy are no fossil fuel emissions and no nitrogen oxide emissions on the property.
•Examples:
•Nesjevellir Geothermal Plant, Iceland•Geysers Geothermal Plant, Sonoma and Lake Counties, CA•Steamboat Spring, Reno, NV

Benefits of using geothermal at airports
•Reduce / eliminate emissions•Carbon Monoxide•Nitrogen Oxides•Sulfuric Oxides•Volatile organic compounds and hydrocarbons
•Quick return on investment•Airports typically operate 24/7•Large open areas help reduce number of heat pump units•Typical R.O.I. = 5-10 years
•Heat runways / taxiways•Hydronic radiant heating – hot water circulates through a series of pipes within the ground, pavement, concrete, etc.
•Airports have large open areas that can support buried geothermal systems
