Where did the voyage end for most immigrants?

• On the east coast, the voyage ended at Ellis Island, NY for most European immigrants.

• On the west coast, however, the voyage for Asian immigrants coming to America ended at Angel Island, San Francisco.

American Life?• Most immigrants stayed in cities and settled

in neighborhoods with “like” immigrants.

• Large American cities became a patchwork of Italian, Irish, Polish, Hungarian, Greek, German, Jewish, and Chinese neighborhoods.

• Acculturation- Process of holding onto older traditions while adapting to a new culture

Why were some Americans opposed to increased

immigration?• Nativists sought to limit immigration &

preserve the country for native born white Protestants.

• They argued new immigrants wouldn’t fit into U.S. culture as they were too different or took low paying jobs.

Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 was an act that barred Chinese Laborers from entering the country. This action was an example of

the nativist feeling in the United States.
