Monthly Volunteer Orientations are a great way to educate New

Yorkers about the residential recycling laws. We often fill up the 20

seats and offer pizza, drinks and an entertaining 2 hour training with

our expert borough coordinators.

Stop’N’Swaps® is a great reuse program for locals to

exchange new-to them items within their communities. On

average, we recruit 15 volunteers to set up and run these busy

operations. They happen throughout all 5 boroughs.

Community Outreach- We collaborate with other departments

to engage locals to think about their environmental stewardship

through interactive activities.

We work with local organizations such as Business

Improvement Districts (BID) to promote recycling at

community events such as block parties.

I truly enjoyed recruiting volunteers for minimal waste prevention at public events. Public events often require 20+ volunteers for multiple shifts. You will need to maximize your social media outreach and reach out to partner organizations and conduct outreach at least one month in advance.

Once the volunteers arrive, we train

volunteers to properly engage event

attendees on recycling. It’s important

to promote recycling with positive

reinforcement: “Hey, what do you

have there? Did you know [item in

hand] is [recyclable] or [thrown in

trash]? Often times, the items such

as forks, knives, napkins are diverted

into compost, MGP, or lastly, landfill.

What you choose to buy, eat, drink

really matters at the end.

And of course, I am always on

board to help spread the message.

This is a general outline of what I

do for work and for fun.
