Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited namely ‘ParyatanParva 2019’, a group discussion on
Importance of Education was held at the Government Primary School, Bochasan in Anand
district of Gujarat.
Anand district of Gujarat carries diversified characteristics leaving impact not only in Gujarat
but across the nation. One of the most important revolutions post-independence in India,
the white revolution benefitting the most marginalized farmers and milk producers across
the nation started here. Anand is the education capital of Gujarat where students from
across the nation come to study various undergraduate and post graduate programs. Anand
and the areas of Central Gujarat have been inspiring and strengthening cooperative
organizations.
Major areas of Anand – Kheda district were under influence of Gandhiji and
SardarVallabhbhai Patel as he was native of the area. To commemorate 150th Birth
anniversary of the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, a group discussion about the
Importance of Education was organized by Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited at the
Government Primary school in Bochasan of Anand District, Kheda.
The discussion was organized with the support of the panchayat body of the village led by
SarpanchMrSomabhaiParmar. Their active support helped better execution where about 80
students, 25 villagers and 15 teachers took part and shared their valuable knowledge,
experiences and vision.
The discussion started with the most favorite Bhajan of Gandhiji, ‘vaishnavjan to tene re
kahie’ performed by the students. Mr. Kiran Gohil, teacher of the school moderated the
group discussion. The discussion was held among three teams of participants like group of
students, group of parents and group of panchayat members and villagers.
The students started the discussion with the messages by Gandhiji to students like
Character cannot be built with mortar and stone. It cannot be built by hands other than
your own. The Principal and the Professor cannot give you character from the pages of
books. Character building comes from their very lives and really speaking, it must come from
within yourselves.
The principal, as a participant supported these thoughts with thoughts of Gandhiji. He said,
“If teachers impart all the knowledge in the world to their students but inculcate not truth
and purity among them, they will have betrayed them and instead of raising them set them
on the downward road to perdition. Knowledge without character is a power for evil only,
as seen in the instances of so many talented thieves and 'gentlemen rascals' in the world.”
Sarpanch, Somabhai believed that education is not just literacy. He explained what the
elected panchayat body has been doing to ensure no one in the village remains without
education. He also did not miss an opportunity to quote Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion.
“We hardly give any thought to the improvement of the character of the educated. The girls,
we say, do not have to earn; so why should they be educated? As long as such ideas persist
there is no hope of our ever knowing the true value of education.” He ensured in front of
everyone that she will give her best to ensure that each and every child and especially girl
child should not be left out in education in any situation from her village.
In the second round, moderator Mr. Gohiltried to explain importance of education and
knowledge in the recent times. He also explained Gandjiji’s views on education in detail.
Reading messages by Gandjiji on education, he said, “An education which does not teach us
to discriminate between good and bad, to assimilate the one and eschew the other, is a
misnomer.”
“Education should be so revolutionized as to answer the wants of the poorest villager, instead of answering those of an imperial exploiter.” he added.
He further said, “Education in the understanding of citizenship is a short-term affair if we are honest and earnest. Basic education links the children, whether of cities or the villages, to all that is best and lasting in India.” Reading exerts from Gandhijis messages about education.
The Sarpanch and the principal of the school gave note of thanks to everyone for
participating in this valuable group discussion and specially thanked TCGL for organizing this
much needed group discussion in their village.
Everyone who took part in Group discussion were gifted a book about Gandhiji’s life.
