Our evacuation drill has us going to the Defer Gym under the supervision of law enforcement and a security consulting firm. Feedback from the drill will continue to refine that process and as that is finalized, the process will be communicated to parents throughout the district. August Registration and Incoming 6

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Pierce Parents: As we head into the final stretch of the school year, I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you of some important information. Spring brings a wide variety of exciting activities for our departing eighth grade students: the promotion ceremony, the eighth grade promotion celebration and dance, and the Cedar Point trip. Participation in these activities is dependent on student behavior. As part of the registration process, all eighth grade students and their parents, agreed to the statement to adhere to the student code of conduct and high disciplinary standards. Please remember, if a student's action results in an out of school separation or suspension, any combination of an in-school separation, and two hours of detention, more than four hours of detention or a total of three or more 4's or 5's in conduct and work habits on the third quarter report card, he/she may be denied the privilege of participating in these activities. If you are the parent of an eighth grade student, please remind your student of these expectations. The approach of spring also raises many concerns regarding the dress code. The Pierce student dress code can be found in your student's agenda, and on page 4 of this issue of the Pierce Pointer. Please be diligent in helping your student adhere to this code and the many other policies we have in place for our students. Thank you for your continued support, Judith Gaffrey Assistant Principal

COUNSELOR CORNER

Page 6

Summer School Update Information regarding Summer School offerings is available on the District website under “Programs” on the right side of screen. Course information and everything that is needed to enroll can be found on this site.

Summer school sessions run from July 5th to July 29

th, Monday through Thursday. All clas-

ses will be held at North High School. Counselors at Pierce will be sending letters before the end of May. Two categories of students will receive letters. One category of students needs to attend summer school due to failing during the school year (Board Policy states that any student failing 2 quarters in the same subject should attend). The other category contains students who, though not required, would benefit from strengthening their skills during the summer session. The recommended courses are usually in the areas of Math, English or Study Skills.

Parents of 8th

graders As part of the end of the year awards for 8

th graders, students who have been on the honor

roll for all 11 quarters are given special recognition by their counselors. The school also rec-ognizes those who have had all A’s. A list of those who qualify will be posted on the wall outside the main office by the end of May. If you think your child should be on the list and they are not, please contact the appropriate counselor after June 1st.

2016-2017 Supply Lists

Please remember to check the Pierce website in August for recom-mended supply lists for the upcoming school year. Once your child

receives their school schedule in August, they will know to which teachers they are assigned. Many teachers have specific recommendations for sup-plies that would be useful in their classrooms on this website. All classrooms recommend having pencils, pens, paper, and a box of Kleenex to

donate to the classroom. Have a wonderful summer!

Incredulous. That is the only word that comes to mind as I sit and write my last letter for the Pointer. How is it possible that this year is already coming to a close? I feel so blessed to have been able to serve as President of the PTO this year, and to lead such a wonderful group of parents on the PTO Board. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the following Pierce PTO Board members : Juli Rybicki, Nancy DeGrand, Kim Shine, Susan Miller, Jessie Schenk, Beverly Bennert, Renee McGlone, Stacey Chen, Jill Chown, Helen Srebernak, Kim Clexton, Michele Hodges, Amie Reno, Sabine Iafrate, Deb Walz, Soozi Hampton, Wendy Bruetsch, Beth Kurta, Renee Jaku-bowki, Renee Borowicz, Joe Parent, Michelle Agosta, Amy Koenig, Jill Richter, Courtney Bocci, and Lara Sanom Fleming. Each one of these Board members contributed to a fantas-tic year, and many of them worked on multiple events or on multiple committees. I appreci-ate you all so very much! Thank you so much to the unparalleled staff and administration at Pierce. You are all so wonderful, and your work is appreciated every day. Chris Clark, Denise Embree, Cookie Etheridge, Paul Booker and Pat Zens help to keep myself and the Board in the loop with anything and everything at school. They are so dedicated to making not only the school day run smoothly, but so many PTO events would not happen as efficiently as they do without all of their help! SUPER Fun Night was a great success! Huge thanks to our organizers, and to each and eve-ry volunteer! We couldn’t pull off any PTO event without our parent helpers, and we had a great group of moms and dads that chose to spend their Friday night helping our students have a great time. Kudos to you ALL! Tuesday, May 17th is our last PTO Board meeting of the 2015-16 school year. 6:30 p.m. in

the Library. Please feel free to attend, as we are always so happy to have any additional in-sight, advice and opinions. We will be tying up loose ends, and saying goodbye to some dedicated Board members that will be done with their years here at Pierce. Have a wonderful close to the school year, and a safe and relaxing summer. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. Warmly, Michelle Kramer, PTO President

PIERCE PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS

All students, who took P.E. this year, had the opportunity to go on a field trip, full of exercise, but also a lot of fun! Over a 120 students went to Airtime Trampoline Game Park in Troy. The first trip, in February, was for 7

th and 8

th graders. We also went a second time, for 6

th graders, in April.

During the two hours, students could shoot baskets, jump in to the foam pit, play dodgeball, or jump on the many trampolines. What a great time they had and excellent health benefits too.

Did you know that 10 minutes of jumping, on a trampoline, is a better cardiovascular work-out than 33 minutes of running? Jumping burns 1,000 per hour, enhances muscle tone, improves energy levels, enhances motor skills and agility, and helps in stress relief.

Thank you to Mr. Josh Lord, who chaperoned on both trips. Also, thank you to the parents who helped us out too. I am very proud, of Pierce students, for being such good representatives for our school. Nice job and I hope you had a great time! Mrs. Beth Allan Pierce Middle School Physical Education Teacher

SHARPEN THOSE MATH SKILLS

Page 25

Dear Parent/Guardian: We would like to encourage you to participate in an exciting program to help your children maintain their math skills through the summer break. The Summer Math Skills Sharpener programs have been featured in the Washington Post and have been ordered by parents in over 1,000 public school systems and 800 parochial schools in all fifty states. Educators agree that it is important for children to be exposed to mathematics over the summer months. The Summer Math Skills sharpener programs have been designed to fulfill that need. The Summer Math Skills Sharpener programs: Provide a quick refresher of basic skills already taught during the preceding year. (A student

should utilize the program for the grade most recently completed. Some children may require a higher or lower grade level.)

Contain a series of varied and interesting problems on every page. Provide enough pages so students can refresh their skills 3 times per week for 10 weeks. Are

presented in an attractive and colorful spiral bound book. Are created for students reviewing grades K-8, Pre-algebra and Algebra I. Contain an answer sheet for immediate feedback. Contain solutions for each problem, grades 4-8, Pre-algebra and Algebra I. Are intended to reinforce math skills that will last a lifetime. Recommended Books: For a student completing 6

th grade math (Course 1) this year, the 6

th and 7

th grade books are

appropriate. For a student completing 7

th grade math (Course 2) this year, the 7

th and 8

th grade books are

appropriate. For a student completing 8

th grade math (Course 3) this year, the 8

th and Pre-algebra books are

appropriate. For a student completing Algebra this year, the Algebra book is appropriate.
