RIK MAYALLBBC comedy legend Rik Mayall has passed away suddenly at his home in southwest London at the age of 56. Mayall established himself firmly in the BBC comedy scene during the 80’s with his role as the obnoxious anarchist, Rick in The Young Ones. Long-time friend, Adrian Edmondson commented on Mayall’s passing: “There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing... And now he’s died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard.”

KIMBRAKimbra will release a new album, entitled The Golden Echo, on Friday 15 August via Warner Bros. Records. The Golden Echo is said to be ambitious, sophisticated, and complex, just like its creator. Collaborations on this album include Muse’s Matt Bellamy, rapper Flying Lotus, Dirty Projector’s Dave Longstreth, Mars Volta’s Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, and John Legend.

STAR WARSThe first Star Wars spin-off film will be filmed at the Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire next year, it’s been confirmed. The British Conservative Party Chancellor, George Osborne, made the announcement writing on Twitter, he said: “On set of Episode VII tonight, can announce another #StarWars film will be made in UK. A #LongTermEconomicPlan in a galaxy far far away.”

BROODSUntil now, kiwi fans have only had the pleasure of seeing Broods perform a handful of times. This August the band will take their live show to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch audiences for the first time. Broods will release their debut full-length album Evergreen featuring the brand new single ‘Mother and Father’ in September this year. SEE THEM LIVE: BROODS

A STRANGE DAY’S NIGHTTOWN HALL

AUCKLAND

7PM, $20-49, AUCKLANDLIVE.CO.NZ

It has been 50 years since The Beatles, the undisputed masters of pop, played Auckland. In celebration of that momentous occasion, the Auckland Town Hall is rewinding time for a two-night ode to the band. The event will include Tim Finn, SJD and many other pop masters who will share the stage with hundreds of students. All funds go to the Play It Strange charity.

LYDIA COLE AND LUKE THOMPSONMEOW

WELLINGTON

7.30PM

These two musicians unite to form Coming Up For Air, who are allowing people a rare opportunity to delve into unrecorded and unreleased material of theirs. The venue lets viewers into their intimate world, complete with upright piano. A sumptuous folkiness rests in both artists’ works sure to create magical moments.

LA DISPUTEZEAL

WELLINGTON

12PM, $50, UTR.CO.NZ

These musicians are a wonderful example of the power of creative expression. The band’s latest album Rooms of the House was recorded in a cabin in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Here, their playing took on a life of its own and birthed this piece of post-hardcore. The band is notoriously hard to box into a genre – however jazzy, blues inspired hardcore may hint at what’s to be expected.

BATUCADA SOUND MACHINETHE TUNING FORK

AUCKLAND

8PM, $25, TICKETMASTER.CO.NZ

The Tuning Fork, Vector’s baby venue is farewelling Batucada Sound Machine before they head off for another European tour. This will be a night of sweaty Brazilian funk, hip hop and Afrobeat. This sound-system produce an exciting explosion of beat-heavy styles given the South Pacific treatment. You may not understand the multitude of languages pulsating through the speakers but rhythm is universal.

91 CLUBCHICKS HOTEL

DUNEDIN

9PM

The All Seeing Hand are one of the most startling live bands you can see locally in New Zealand; aggressive noise, electronica (via DJ Alphabet Head) and Mongolian throat singing. Their live performances are on another level in terms of visceral energy, ripping from a latex ‘blob’ as the show slowly commences. They are accompanied by Wellington folk singer and all round buzz-out Seth Frightening.

RÜFÜSSTUDIO

AUCKLAND

8PM, $39, DASHTICKETS.CO.NZ

RÜFÜS are a Sydney-based indie dance band. Their live show is honed to perfection featuring live instruments as well as stomping electronica. Their house jams have been described as infectious and wildly danceable and they are hitting our shores after a massive 17 date sold-out Australian tour. Watch this space for the next big thing in dance music.

HILLTOP HOODS SAN FRAN BATH HOUSE

WELLINGTON

8PM, $30, DASHTICKETS.CO.NZ

Who said Australasia can’t do hip hop? Hilltop Hoods are Aussie heavyweights and they’re back in NZ. The band don’t hide their twangy accents behind faux-Bronx tough talk – they wear their nationality with pride and this has led to them being embraced for their Adelaide-bred sincerity. They have stayed true to their music and stayed at the top of their game.

TINY RUINSCRYSTAL PALACE

AUCKLAND

8PM, $20, UTR.CO.NZ

Crystal Palace, the historical Mt Eden theatre, has been waiting for a moment to rise up from the ashes. This will be a special show, as Tiny Ruins gets to perform her desperately personal folk-pop on the tiny stage. Her beautifully plucked acoustic guitar has been added to with a bassist and drummer. The bolder arrangements allow her to increase her lyrical confidence as well as keeping her charming innocence.

PEKING DUKSAN FRAN BATH HOUSE

WELLINGTON

10PM, $30-35

Peking Duk is the electro band du jour, garnering critical acclaim while also being darlings of the rave scene. Sparky electro/house with a hypnotic drugged out beat is the recipe for Peking Duk. They have splattered the charts with remixes and collaborations as well as hitting festivals and major supporting slots.

ABORTEDCHURCHILLS

CHRISTCHURCH

7PM, $40, UTR.CO.NZ

Sonically speaking, Aborted can kill. The band are here on their Necrotic Manifesto tour. The band focus on the grim reality of kill or be killed. Their latest album is a conceptual rethinking of the tales of the Necronomicon (book of the dead). The music is hard-hitting and unrelenting. Scary stuff.

CRIMSON PROJEKCTSTUDIO

AUCKLAND

8PM, TOMBOWLER.COM.AU

K’rd’s Studio is hosting a three hour show featuring the mind-melting progressive rock of King Crimson. Three of the original King Crimson members will be present, initially playing their own solo tracks each with a couple of Crimson songs thrown in. The night will end with the trio merging together for a session of King Crimson music in all its jazzy experimental glory.

NURSE JACKIE – S6FOUR, 10.30PM

The season six premier of Nurse Jackie finds Jackie having broken her year of sobriety. The last season ended with Jackie popping pills and floating around high as a kite. The revelation of relapse hurt, and it is up to this season to deal with the issues of addiction.

BAD TEACHER – S1FOUR, 8PM

Based on the Cameron Diaz film, FOUR’s new comedy focuses on Meredith Davis, a con-woman who fakes her way into the teaching profession. Initially for the pay check and the chance of finding a rich husband she slowly against her will becomes part of the school community. She’s unapologetically mean yet charismatic enough that you forgive her every time.

SHORTLAND STREETTV2, 7PM

New Zealand’s longest running soap opera is about to get some international star power with Ed Sheeran, British songwriter is about to turn up in Shortland Street. The singer will be playing himself acting alongside the teens known as ‘The Brat Pack’.

AN IDIOT ABROAD - S3UKTV, 9.55PM

Karl Pilkington, the unsophisticated Englishman who has whinged his way into the hearts of many, is back for a third series of An Idiot Abroad. The strange Pilkington has fascinated the show’s creator Ricky Gervais for several years, as he makes Pilkington begrudgingly set off on voyages many of us would kill to go on. The idiot, takes his uniquely British view point and filters the world’s wonders through a hilariously home-sick point of view.

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWSGENERAL RELEASE

The collaboration between Taika Waititi of Boy fame and Jermaine Clement one half of the Flight of the Conchords duo is enough to have any self-respecting kiwi drooling at the mouth. This mockumentary follows the lives of a group of vampire flatmates hanging out in Wellington. Surreal humour is what both artists do best and this sounds like another classic of their own unique genre. Blood and laughs should be expected.

TRUE BLOOD – S7SOHO, 8.30PM

The show feels like it’s been around forever, right from the beginning of the Vampire mania which has taken over popular culture, giving its own warped spin on the familiar vampire cliché. Equal parts violent, sexy and funny, it’s sad having to accept that this season will be its last.

THE LATE NIGHT BIG BREAKFASTTV ONE, 9.30PM

New Zealand’s first and only live, as opposed to pre-recorded, late-night entertainment show. The banter is fresh and cheeky, both scripted and off-the-cuff comedy. Luckily, the show isn’t too late to alienate most of its viewers. Breakfast is a dish best served late at night before bed. Hosted by Jeremy Wells and others, this is the dark side of ‘morning television’, dysfunction at its best.

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTIONGENERAL RELEASE

The Transformers series has reached mega proportions, doing away with scrawny Shia Labeouf in favour of muscle man Mark Wahlberg. The franchise is currently the 12th highest grossing series of films ever, with that number set to sky rocket with the release of this edition. Michael Bay will be doing what he does best: eye popping action.

LIVE FROM THE ARTISTS DENARTS CHANNEL, 8.30PM

The National, famous for their dark, melancholy and obtuse lyrical pop music have released album after album to rave reviews. The band, now based in Brooklyn, perform at New York’s Park Avenue Armory, a venue specifically chosen by the band for its personal significance and unique setting.

AGE GAP LOVETV3, 9.30PM

Television’s fascination in documenting the strange and sometimes perverse way we humans choose to live our lives continues with Age Gap Love, which follows the lives of six of Britain’s biggest age gap lovers. Differences in age is certainly nothing too unique, the show documents the way society can reject them. The show seeks understanding and acceptance for these couples and the similarities they share with everyone else.

SAVE WITH JAMIETV3, 7.30PM

The cockney geezer who took on the American and British food institutions and won, revolutionising what is meant by a healthy meal, is back. This time he is showing the public how to cook a great meal without a massive budget. The show is a response to the fans, getting them to ‘shop smart, cook clever and waste less’. His boyish charm means he’s always a pleasure to cook with.

LITTLEBIGPLANET 3 HANDS ONPLAYSTATION4

It’s difficult to surprise people at E3, but Sony managed to keep this one under wraps until it was revealed at PlayStation’s press conference to the ovation of the eager masses. Today, behind closed doors in the PlayStation media room at E3, I got some hands-on time with LittleBigPlanet 3, with the tutelage of Jason Stewart from Sony Europe.

It was expected that Sony would be pushing the franchise onto the new console to take advantage of the graphical prowess of the PS4. But what was completely out of the blue was the introduction of brand new characters who will accompany our beloved Sackboy this time around.

Named Oddsock, Toggle and Swoop, these three new characters are not only charming and packed full of cuteness, they also offer completely new gameplay experiences to the core (critically acclaimed) platforming action-puzzler.

Oddsock is a quadrupedal critter that looks like a frog, or maybe a dog (we’ll call it a dog-frog). This funny little creation is much faster than

Sackboy and can wall jump his way through levels. His swift little dog-frog body can be useful in traversing quick moving hazards, or even to power objects in order to solve puzzles.

Swoop is an obvious bird-like character who can pick up other characters and carry them to hard-to-reach areas. But he can also lift platforms or obstacles to allow the ground-based characters to get past.

But finally, Toggle steals the show in LittleBigPlanet 3. He is both the biggest and the smallest of Sackboy’s new friends. Yes, Toggle has ability to change from being a giant to being a tiny dwarf at the press of the button. As the big cuddly giant, he is strong and able to move heavy blocks. He is also obviously the heaviest, weighing down objects and sinking to the bottom of water – both mechanics toward the gentle puzzle-solving elements in the game. When he is small, he is quicker and able to squeeze through tiny gaps that other characters cannot.

All of these characters complement our main hero, Sackboy, perfectly. While the

Page 22: Groove Guide 505

22 | GROOVEGUIDE.CO.NZ

previous LittleBigPlanet titles were insanely fun, the new cast just add extra variety and replay ability to an already excellent gameplay formula. They will also make a big difference as players use the LittleBigPlanet editor to create all manner of amazing levels and scenarios for others to share and enjoy.

Speaking of sharing the fun, LittleBigPlanet 3 will offer distinct gameplay levels for multiplayer, including up to four players where teams work co-operatively to solve each chapter. It’s here that the new characters really shine, with each character’s unique ability becoming a vital part to progressing beyond each obstacle.

There is also the extra polish that the PS4 console can offer the award-winning

franchise too. The graphics in LittleBigPlanet 3 are stunning, with more detail in the environments and an even more immersive and impressive depth to the semi-3d environments that fans of the series have grown to love. Finally, the developers have also managed to increase the responsiveness of the controls, making it even easier to control our hessian-skinned pals.

The end result is a game that is more accessible and less frustrating, but retains that challenging platform-puzzler that fans have grown to love. LittleBigPlanet 3 is due out this November and there is already plans for downloadable content in the form of new levels and customisable elements soon after launch.

22 JUMP STREETIt’s rare to find a sequel that’s better than its predecessor – and directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller know that. So with a wink and a nod, tongue firmly planted in metaphorical cheek, the pair jump headfirst into the anticipated second film with a street smart self-awareness. Laden with in-jokes and innuendos, 22 Jump Street has stepped up, while keeping the 2012 reboot’s success firmly in the back of their minds. After graduating high school, Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill) go undercover at a local college to bust the ever-expanding drug ring. But when the boys find themselves on different paths, their friendship is put to the test. Hill and Tatum continue to prove why they are the new dynamic duo of comedy, with Tatum excelling beyond his heart-throb image to show real flair in a not-so-sexy role. A

romantic subplot for Hill with newcomer Amber Stevens (much like his connection with Brie Larson in the original) throws up added complications, while Tatum finds his own kindred spirit in football jock Zook (played by Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell’s son Wyatt) – a hilarious spin, as Hill and Tatum’s “bromance” is put to the test. The audience is under no illusion that this sequel follows a similar arc to the first, but the aforementioned self-awareness, as well as a few red herrings along the way, means there’s never a dull moment. Bigger laughs, bigger budget and bigger cameos make this one of the few follow-ups to resist committing a crime against comedy (Looking at you The Hangover III). A must-see for fans of 21 Jump Street. LAURA WEASER

30 | GROOVEGUIDE.CO.NZ

In 1968, the seeds were sown for a worldwide conquest by two men working in London as hired hands and two from the wilds of the Northern England who were toiling in relative obscurity. Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones were the Londoners playing on countless sessions and Robert Plant and John Bonham gigged together as Band Of Joy. When Led Zeppelin took flight in October of 1968, no one could foresee how they would take the world by storm. Through nine studio albums and assorted tales of debauchery, their popularity and creativity seemed limitless. When they disbanded in 1980 after the tragic death of Bonham, the world never accepted the fact that the group would be no more. Sure, there would be the occasional reunion for momentous reasons, notably Live Aid and Atlantic Record’s founder Ahmet Ertegan’s memorial concert in 2007, but no new studio recordings or a tour, despite huge financial offers. In order to bring the sound of Led Zeppelin’s recordings to their rightful thunderous and dynamic sonic glory, Jimmy Page set out to have each album lovingly re-mastered and restored. While digging deep in the vaults, he unearthed a treasure trove of never released music, which he then coupled with the newly restored original nine albums.

On June 03, 2014, the first three albums complete with the newly uncovered songs, were released. So how did Jimmy Page decide what to include in order to enhance these musical landmarks? Jimmy Page: How I arrived at the final choice of this was to actually have a game plan of how to approach it. And because the original catalog albums

were being re-mastered and coming out, I thought that the idea of having a companion disc was gonna be a real good one, because there were going to be all these treasures that would be revealed. Things that had never come out on bootleg; I mean it’s just a wonderful treasure trove. So there’s all these little gems that I know people are really going to just love, because it’s the door opening into the time of the recording of these albums. It’s a portal into this whole musical time slot for each one.

Since the debut Zeppelin record was recorded so quickly, the companion disc on the Deluxe and Super-deluxe release is the band performing at the Olympia Theater in Paris in 1969. What do you remember about playing the venue back then? JP: Well Olympia was one of those venues that you’d hear about – like the Vienna State Opera House or the Albert Hall – that had a fantastic reputation. It was the most prestigious gig as far as I know. It was really wonderful to play. You can hear that it’s so enthusiastic. We’re really, really, really, really enthusiastic and that was good. Do I remember it? Let’s put it this way – we did a lot of concerts, but I recall it when I listen to it.

The group did four US and four UK tours that year, and amazingly, your second album, Led Zeppelin II, was released in October of the same year, a mere ten months after the debut. Led Zeppelin II went on to become the group’s first number one album in the United States and in your native England. JP: If we look at the recording process of Led Zeppelin II, we began in Olympic

Studios – the studio where The Rolling Stones had recorded and we’d recorded our first album. On this album, it was an engineer called George Scamps and he did “Whole Lotta Love” and “What Is and What Should Never Be” and something called “La La,” which is also included. It wasn’t a bad start to kick off this album – to have “Whole Lotta Love” and “What Is and What Should Never Be.” But the rest of the LP was recorded while we were in America, at studios in New York, and we did overdubs on “Whole Lotta Love” in Los Angeles.

How did the band manage to write and record such monumentally influential music while touring at the same time? John Paul Jones: It was like: “Oh, we’ve got a day off. What studio is in town?” Looking back, I can’t imagine how we wrote and recorded it. I wouldn’t plan something like that now or ever, but it just seemed the time to do it. We wanted to get a record out, and we were playing so much, and it was a very exciting time musically. I think we just wanted to get some of that feeling — that heat — on record, which we did.

Led Zeppelin III was released in October 1970. When that album was released, Plant couldn’t believe the critics’ reaction. Robert Plant: We wanted to try and stretch it out and open it up and change. Just shock ourselves to see exactly what we could do. So we set off in a jeep. We just started trying go back into an acoustic vein. It wasn’t an area that we hadn’t touched because of “Your Time is Gonna Come” and “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You,” and the total awareness, well, not total, but being exposed to the Incredible Sting Band, and Roy Harper and all of that stuff around that was music for the head, which was coming from a more acoustic-based sound. And that’s what we did. And I think it was a great success. Even though it was the least successful Led Zeppelin album, and with the critics screaming for our lives and blood saying, “what’s this crap?” – it was probably one of our finest moments. And the fact that we deemed that we had to do it at all was a fine moment.
