Mosaic in Grand Junction 3 Making a Difference

From the Executive Director by Theresa Burns-Fair

On July 1, 2011, Mosaic in Grand Junction will celebrate 25 years serving people in the Mesa County community. Since I was hired in December 1986, I can say that I have been here almost from the very start. I share with the Mosaic team the years of memories, stories, tears and laughs. As a 20-year-old college student, I began my journey working as a direct care employee right here in Grand Junction. To this day, I still have the pleasure to be working with some of my mentors. These mentors are the people we support. They literally taught me to manage time, roll with the changes, laugh at myself and to be thankful for what we have, especially the friends we are able to share our lives with. I think often of going on runs with Randy before my shift, making horrible cakes with Sandra, laughing at Corel’s funny sayings, playing basketball with Bill, George’s incredible smile, Patsy spilling punch down my wedding dress, singing “Down Town” with Karen, giving Mark a family to love, and watching my children

learn the important lessons from God that were taught by each of these people we serve! I am truly blessed.

Through each of these years, Mosaic has never remained still. We have always been searching out and implementing new systems, approaches and training to give the best care to people. That is not going to change. Mosaic is leading the charge during the next year in the aspect of electronic health records (called Therap), electronic timekeeping for our employees, My Finance for personal needs, and a new approach to public relations and fundraising. Hold your hats as this roller-coaster is on full blast! Along with these exciting changes we will be moving our day service and office in June. On June 20, you will find us at 2456 Industrial Blvd. (behind Chili’s by the mall). We are planning an open house in late August and hope to see you all in our new digs.

God’s Grace, Mercy, and Peace

Mosaic Participates in Share FestShare Fest is an annual city-wide outreach and service

event. Each spring, over 20 churches and more than 3,000 volunteers in Grand Junction join together in an unprecedented act of unity, worshiping together before going out into the community and performing service projects free of charge. Projects include yard work, swamp cooler start-up, building projects, painting, home maintenance, vehicle maintenance and much more! This year Mosaic in Grand Junction became involved with the weekend event. Day services participants assisted in “stuffing bags”. Bags containing information on local resources as well as a packet of seeds and homemade cookies were distributed to each home that was “adopted” by Share Fest volunteers. Over 2,000 bags were “stuffed” and distributed this year. Mosaic employees also volunteered by “adopting” local projects.

Bayley Rogers, Public Relations Specialist, her two boys,

niece and nephew adopted an elderly woman who needed help washing windows, flipping mat-tresses and cleaning her vehicle. “When I told the boys what we were doing, they asked, ‘Is she paying us?’, ‘That is exactly why we are doing this!’ was my response. It was a great experience that I am glad they were able to be part of.”

Next year, the Grand Junction agency hopes to be even more involved.

Advocacy allows people to tell public officials how they feel about things that are important to them.

The United States is a democracy. In this system of government, every person has the right to take their case to the men and women who are elected to make laws and set policies on behalf of the rest of the people.

Every person can make an impact by: Telling; Asking; Sharing; Providing; Showing; and Helping.

The bottom-line: Policymakers listen to people who can cast a vote.
