Europeanism in Al. Chavchavadze’s Life and Creativity Work

Scientific supervisor – Professor Tamar Gogoladze

    1. Old Georgian writing over the centuries based on the cultural – political or neighborlyrelationship was influenced by literature and culture of variety of countries (Byzantium, Arabia,Ottoman Empire, Iran). This process drastically changed from XIX century, when works of Russia

  • 13

and European writers became available for Georgians. At this time Georgian writers began to readand translate their masterpieces.

    2. One of the first founders of Europeanism in Georgian culture is Aleksandre Chavchavadze (1786-1846). Aleksandre Chavchavadze translated Voltaire and Hugo, dramas of French classicists, brought European elements to Georgian reality and in parallel lines with oriental motifs, developedEuropean cultural traits and thinking in Georgian literature.

Women's Cultural and Educational Activities in Medieval Georgia

Scientific supervisor - Associate Professor Manana Javakhishvili

    1. Georgian women were actively involved in cultural and educational activities in MedievalGeorgia and abroad. Such high involvement of women in feudal society was provided by their full-fledged membership of society. However, these sources provide us with information that are onlyabout noble women. We actually do not have sources which could say more about women’s lowsocial class.

    2. Historical sources (narrative and epigraphic) give us important information about women’sparticipation and leadership in building churches and monasteries, learning, education, trainingscribes, coping manuscripts or restatement. Exactly two ancient manuscript of “Kartlis Tskovreba’’(History of Georgia) are rewritten under the commission of Georgian queens.

    3. At that time every single generation gained reading and writing skills and obtained elementaryeducation under the supervision of their mothers. Late Medieval European travelers said thatwomen played very important role in preserving literacy and education (Lambert, Turnefory). Thus, cultural activities were available for women in Medieval Georgia. Georgian history haspreserved many successful female names who made crucial contribution to Georgian politics, diplomacy, public life, etc.

Ilia Chavchavadze about the Georgian Language

Scientific supervisor – Professor Darejan Siria

    1. Ilia Chavchavadze is among the writers who made a great contribution to developing Georgianconsciousness. Society knows him as a multi-faceted figure, but his publicistic writing is also veryimportant. Reading the articles, the reader is immediately attracted with the author’s multilateraland deep erudition, wide vision and the special ability to analyze the events. There is no significantfield of public life of that time Ilia did not express his qualified opinion about.

    2. The presented paper focuses on the letters Ilia Chavchavadze dedicated to the Georgian language,in which the writer analyzes different issues, regarding the Georgian language. Ilia considerpollution of language as the main problem and thinks that every writer must be aware of thelanguage purity. He also mentions that provincial speaking is the treasure which constantly feedsthe literary language. We believe that Ilia Chavchavadze sees and analyzes problems correctly, because in his point of view language is among the values which cause mental stability.

Iceberg Principle in Ernest Hemingway’s Literary Work

  • 17

Scientific supervisor – Professor Nino Kemertelidze

“If a writer knows enough about what he is writing about, he may omit things that he knows. Thedignity of movement of an iceberg is due to only one ninth of it being above water…

My aim is to put down on paper what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way” –Ernest Hemingway

    1. Ernest Hemingway's journalistic experience and education had a great impact on his languageand style. The simplicity of sentences and the style he uses as well as his sincerity fascinates readers. It is noteworthy that the great “ocean” of emotions and ideas are hidden namely beyond thissimplicity which in most cases is not comprehensible for readers. Hemingway’s language and stylecan be compared to his wonderful novel “The Old Man and the Sea” and a reader - to Santiago who, while seeking for a big fish follows quiet waves and suddenly finds that huge fish what can be calledHemingway's age.

    2. At the first glance, Hemingway's literary work is easily read and understandable, but the hiddenidea is never seen on the surface. I think that the term “iceberg” suits namely his literary work as asymbol of something hidden and not obvious.

    3. Ernest Hemingway's literary work is close to his life; namely this fact makes them amazing andincomparable. While reading Hemingway’s novels and stories, the reader vividly feels the emotionsthat the writer experienced at different stages of his life.

Feeling-Condition Designating Phraseological Units in Kartluri

Scientific supervisor – Professor Mariam Koberidze

    1. The stock of words existing in the language creates vocabulary. In different languages, besidesextensive vocabulary, there are such bound collocations that are rather expressive and emotional.

    2. A speaker can express different feelings and conditions with phraseological units. The paperdiscusses semantic diversities and peculiarities of feeling-condition designating phraseologicallocutions according to the Kartluri dialect.

    3. In Kartluri we can express the following feeling-conditions: Love: “Gulze abia’’ – loves verymuch, is craze about; Envy: “Tvalebidan vedza amosdis” - envies, is too greedy; Anger:“Kutsumtsrakhi moedeba” - will get angry; Sorrow: “Mdughrit aris “ – is in grief, etc.

    4. Sometimes, the same feeling-condition designating phraseological units have different semanticloading depending on the situation; for example: “Tqveni vardi gefinot” – 1) is said to a personinforming good news; 2) blessing, uttered while telling something unpleasant. “Pirqu dasagubebeli”- 1) curse, is uttered while being angry; 2) sometimes in Kartli is said jokingly.

  • 19

    5. Kartluri dialect is rich with the phraseologian units. A lot of synonymous phraseologicallocutions can serve as one of the examples; for instance: “Guls daiaminebs” – “Guls gulis alagsdaidebs” - will calm down.

    Thematic Parallelism

Scientific supervisor – Professor Nino Kemertelidze

    1. Parallelism or parallel construction (symmetry) is a syntactic stylistic device which implieshomogeneous arrangement of the same members in two or more consecutive sentences or clauses. The necessary condition in parallel construction is the use of components in a sentence that aregrammatically the same or similar in their construction, sound and/or meaning. Parallelconstructions are found not only in literary works, but are also freely used in ordinaryconversations. The use of parallel structures in speech or writing allows speakers and writers tomaintain a consistency within their work and create a balanced flow of ideas. Moreover, it can beemployed as a tool for persuasion as well because of the repetition it uses.

    2. The types of parallel constructions: partial and complete. Partial parallel arrangement is the repetition of some parts of successive sentences or clauses.

“It is the mob that labour in your fields and serve in your houses – that man your navy and recruityour army, - that have enabled you to defy all the world, and can also defy you when neglect andcalamity have driven them to despair.”

Complete parallel arrangement maintains the principle of identical structures throughoutthe corresponding sentences. It is also called balance parallelism.

“The seeds ye sow – another reaps,The robes ye weave – another wears,The arms ye forge – another bears.”

  • 21

    3. Chiasmus or reversed parallel contraction and antithesis can be considered as certain types ofparallelism. Difference between pure parallelism and antithesis is noteworthy. In case of the latter, parallel constructions should necessarily be semantically opposite.

    4. The novelty of the research is introduction of a new type of parallelism – the so called thematicparallelism what can be discussed only within the text i.e. on the text level. It is the case when twosimilar stories/facts/events are described in the parallel line. But if the themes are opposite, it can beconsidered as a thematic antithesis.

God and Its Interpretation in the Thinking of Some Philosophersof Ancient Times

    Scientific supervisor – Tamar Gelashvili

    1. The aim of the paper is to describe the main philosophical principles and theological paradigmsthat became the basis of a philosophical view about God and his nature in ancient times. One of thephilosophers before Socrates, Xenophanes criticizes Homer’s theology, because in his works Homerdescribes God as thief, having the habits of bluff, lechery, etc. These gods are like human beings. That is why their existence is unbelievable.

    2. Like Xenophanes, Plato strictly criticizes stories about gods told by Homer and Hesiod. In hismind, such myths and stories must be banned in the ideal state, because they do not tell us anythingabout reality. God is unchangeable and want to mislead anyone; he is kind and never hurts anyone’sfeelings.

    3. Unlike Plato, who teaches us that the idea of absolute kindness is inconceivable for human mind,Aristotle believes that it is exactly human mind that can perceive everything. For him, God andmind are the same and God is always attempting to perceive himself. According to Aristotle, Godand human beings have something in common - so to say “active intellect”, that makes it possiblefor us to perceive everything including God and his existence, but unlike God, man cannot do itcontinuously.

    4. Epicurus was one of the powerful philosophers of ancient times. He thought that gods were notinterested in the mankind and people’s life; they did not take care of them, did not punish them andeven did not reward them for kind actions. He deems that it is useless to think that gods created theuniverse for us, human beings, because they do not need our gratefulness; that we have nothingthat could be desired and that could make our existence logical.

Variations of Medea in Fine Art(from Antiquity to Modernity)

Scientific supervisor – Associate Professor Nana Tonia

“Painting is silent poetry and painting is verbal poetry”Simonides (c. 556 BC-c. 468 BC)

    1. Actually, it was Euripides’ genial tragedy that has become a role model for the rest artists of theworld in the sphere of painting, sculpture of mural. Luckily, images of Medea on the frescos andceramic works of the ancient period still exist today. The brilliant description of Medea’s sculpturemade by Kallistratos should also be mentioned. While reading it, we may vividly see an ancientworld and we move to the Medea’s own world, full of anxiety and despair: “I saw Medea, who wasso famous in the land of Macedonia. Marble indicated on her inside world, because master’s artreflected those peculiarities, that described Medea’s nature: her mysterious thoughts, combatingcharacter. One would definitely find a hidden sadness in her face expression as well. To be short, everything that I have seen there, indicated on the tragedy of her life”. I think Kallistratos’ shortoutline vividly tells us about the nature and temper of Medea written by Euripides.

    2. The paper given above aims at researching the following: 1. Medea’s images of fine art inAntiquity; 2. How Medea as a mythological figure was interpreted in western European artists andin different art movements, (e.g. Romanticism, Post impressionism, Art-Nouveau, etc.). That meansto research the peculiarities in each movement of fine art. I think that public attitude towardMedea’s face in different periods of time should be taken into consideration, as well as theunderstanding of the images of Medea by the creator, towards the social context.

New Types of Aposiopesis (Break-in-the Narrative)

Scientific supervisor – Professor Nino Kemertelidze

    1. Aposiopesis is a Greek word and means "becoming silent". It is a figure of speech wherein asentence is deliberately broken off and left unfinished, the ending to be supplied by theimagination, giving an impression of unwillingness or inability to continue. Thus, a sentence isunfinished and a reader/listener has to guess what a writer/speaker wants to say; he/she has topenetrate into a writer’s or a speaker’s intention and finish the statement. Aposiopesis ischaracteristic of spoken variety of language.

    2. In case of aposiopesis a certain type of implication is always suggested. This device offers anumber of variants deciphering the implication; it is highly predictable. The problem of implicationis a crucial one in stylistics. What is implied sometimes outweighs what is expressed. In otherstylistic devices the degree of implication is not as high as in break-in-the-narrative.

    3. Aposiopesis graphically is expressed by a dash or a half period. In speech, pause and intonationplay the role of the mentioned graphical marks.

    4. A break of narrative can be caused by:

Unwillingness of a speaker to proceed.

    “Stop doing such things or I’ll . . . ” (implication is a threat)

“If you continue such way of living, in a few months time …” (implication is awarning)

  • 27

The supposition that what remains to be said can be understood by the implicationembodied in what has been said.

“You know who did it, better than I do. He is . . . ”

Uncertainty as what should be said.

“So is so beautiful, so, so, that . . .” (the speaker definitely does not know how toexpress a certain lady’s beauty)

    5. The novelty of the research is introduction of a new type of aposiopesis – mechanical aposiopesisand partial aposiopesis.

In case of mechanical aposiopesis one person interrupts the other and is suddenlyinvolved in conversation.

“I want to tell you that -Oh, shut up, I don’t want to listen to you.”

We suggest that aposiopesis can be called partial when a speaker does not want toproceed or does not know how to proceed. So, he/she breaks his/her narration for awhile, but finally completes the sentence.

Historical Character in Grigol Abashidze’s Novel “Lasharela”

Scientific supervisor – Professor Tamar Gogoladze

    1. XII-XIII centuries Georgia entered the history as the "Golden Era’’. At that time, King Tamarruled the Kingdom. After her death, her son Lasha-Giorgi (1193-1223) became an absolute ruler ofGeorgia who was proclaimed as a co-ruler even when her mother was still alive. The period ofLasha-Giorgi’s kingship was sufficiently studied in Georgian Historiography. This paper focuses onrevealing Tamar’s successor’s artistic image in the creative work of XX century Georgian writerGrigol Abashidze (1914-1994), namely in his novel “Lasharela’’. Referring to the researchers’ (A.Nikoleishvili, B. Kupatadze) thoughts and major peripeteia of the novel, relying on the “Chronicles

  • 29

of the Mongols Era’’ of and the materials of the history of modern Georgia, we will try to ascertainhow the historical fact or event and Lasha-Giorgi’s personality are reflected in Grigol Abashidze’snovel “Lasharela’’.

    2. There were divergence of opinions on Lasha-Giorgi’s personality and his political course, asLasha-Giorgi’s kingship was immediately followed by the falling era of Georgian statehood. Thenext generations began searching for those reasons which supposedly caused this process; andindeed this question was not raised in the period of Lasha-Giorgi’s kingship and at that timeoptimistic soul of Tamar’s epoch was still unshakable.

    3. Grigol Abashidze’s novel “Lasharela’’, which was written in 1857, is the feature chroniclereflecting Georgia of Lasha-Giorgi’s period. Grigol Abashidze almost exactly tells us as about theroyal as well as ordinary life of the crowned king who reigned in the 10s of XIII century. Despitethe fact that Lasha-Giorgi’s all important activities are described in the novel, the main axis of theplot is his romantic love to the woman from Velistsikhe that turned into the King's destiny.

Zanian Borrowings in the Gurian Dialect: Plant Names

Scientific supervisor – Associate Professor Marine Ivanishvili

    1. The Kartvelian languages (Georgian, Zan (Megrelian and Laz) and Svan are rich in dialectalvarieties. The investigation of the Kartvelian dialects may be effective according to various points ofview: characterizing the dialects' phonetic, morphological, syntactic and lexical peculiarities;showing the common lingual tendencies manifested in the dialects of this or that district;investigating the principle linguistic isoglosses; from the ethnic- territorial point of view, etc.

    2. All the Kartvelian languages and dialects historically and nowadays are closely connected to eachother; especially the western Georgian dialects are related to geographically near to them localizedZan languages. In the presented work Zanian borrowings in the Gurian dialect are considered.

    3. According to the scholars, Zan (Megrelian and Laz) language was one of the general factorswhich played a significant role in formation of the western Georgian dialects (Gurian, Acharian,Imeretian). The influence of Megrelian is obvious even nowadays in the domains of phonetics, morphology, syntax and vocabulary.

  • 31

    4. In the article is obtained the empirical data from the basic lexical fund of the language, particularly, the plant names. Gurian lexical unites are compared to other Georgian dialects, alsoMegrelian, Laz and Svan ones. The influence on Gurian became clearer. There are three types ofsimilarity:

    A) Gurian plant names are absolutely similar to Zan ones: Literary Georgian: badriǯani“eggplant”; Megr./Gurian : patriǯani.B) Similarity in phonetic changes: Literary Georgian: gvirila “daisy”, Megrelian: kamenia,Gur.: ḳamania.C) In Gurian dialect there are translated Megrelian plant names: Georgian literary: danduri“Helichrysum“, Megr.: vaɣuria, uɣurale “immortal”; Guria: “ukvdava” “immortal”.

    5. It should be noted that all three groups contain lots of lexical units which are presented in thearticle.

The Russian Tale of Queen Dinara and Queen Tamar of Georgia

Scientific supervisor – Professor Ilona Dzneladze

The presented work is about the old Russian story which was created in XV-XVI centuries;moreover, it concerns the problem of identification of the main character, Queen Dinara andQueen Tamar of Georgia. In my paper I discuss the following aspects:

    1. An overview of the relationship between Russia and Georgia.

    2. Suppositions: When and in what conditions the Georgian historical facts were spread in Russia.

    3. The analysis of the named work shows that “the Tale of Queen Dinara” was built on Georgianmaterial. Anonymous author says that after the death of Alexander, the King of Iveria, and hisdaughter Dinara ascended the throne because the King had no son. The queen counters against theMuslim world. The plot is very similar to Tamar’s reign and to the real Georgian historic facts thathappened in the 12th century. How can we explain this similarity? I am going to talk about thisproblem in my paper.

    4. On the border of XIX-XX centuries, two different suggestions related to Dinara’s identificationarose in Georgian historiography. One belongs to Mary Brosey, and the other, quite interesting oneto Kirion II. Mary considered that in the fiction Tamar’s golden age was shown in the wrong way.But Kirion disclaimed this opinion and deemed the Queen Dinara of the Kingdom of Hereti (Xcentury) as a prototype of the main character. The last consideration was not shared. In my paper Iwill present both arguments and counterarguments about the abovementioned and will try to showmy personal attitude about it.

Ilia Chavchavadze’s “Is That a Man?!” and Emile Zola’s “Trap”

Scientific supervisor – Associate Professor Eka Vardoshvili

    1. Both -Ilia Chavchavadze and Emile Zola were the prominent writers of the nineteenth century. One carried out his creative activity in Georgia, another - in France. Ilia Chavchavadze was therepresentative of critical realism; Zola was a realist and at the same time - theorist of Naturalism. These two public figures, liberals and writers struggled against injustice. Both of them had tragic life– they were assassinated because of they have different views and beliefs. Besides bibliographicsimilarities, a lot of analogies can be observed in their creative work.

    2. The presented paper aims to show the similarities between Ilia Chavchavadze’s story “Is That aMan?!” and Emil Zola’s novel “Trap”.

    3. In both fictions are depicted people with vicious features. Laziness, illiteracy, stupidity andjealousy, hypocrisy – this is a short list of the common features discussed in this paper (certainly, with the right examples from the texts).

    4. Both of the fictions have the same goal. By describing Tatkaridze, Ilia Chavchavadze shows allevil features of our nation. Zola also tries to reveal all negative sides of French society.

    5. Both authors consider that environment and society have a great influence on formation of ahuman’s character.

    6. Social-political role is also very important. The characters of the story “Is That a Man?!” arevictims of the serfdom system, and “Trap” depicts that depravity – “gift” of bourgeoisie.

Some Aspects Related to Teaching and a Teacher’s Role in Pupils’ Education

Scientific supervisor – Associate Professor Manana Kajaia

    1. The great Georgian writer and state figure Ilia Chavchavadze considers that the main duty of ateacher is bring up future-oriented young generation. It is a set of activities focused on formation ofyouth as worthy personalities. A well-known Chilean teacher, Nobel Prize winner GabrielaMinstral in her work“Teacher’s Prayer” says: “O Lord, who preach and teach us, forgive myarrogance for teaching, being called a teacher as you people on Earth called you”.

  • 36

    2. According to scientists, mental, moral, physical and labour education takes special emphasisamong different directions of education.

    3. The great fabulist and didactic writer, Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani through his fables teaches us whatfeatures a real man should have and what relationships he/she should have towards society.

    4. The great Georgian didactic writer Davit Guraminshvili writes: “Knowledge guides a human’smind. The first priority is given to the family and the environment where a person obtainseducation with the help of a teacher."

    5. We have to remember that a child’s mental development greatly depends on the environmentrather than heredity. Vasil Sukhomlinski has the same consideration. He considered a teacher’sprofession as the most respectable and noble profession.

unified political culture. Political culture is a system of cognitive, affective and evaluativeorientations and can be analyzed in terms of inputs, processes and outputs.

    2. There are three types of political culture: Parochial, subject and participant. We are interested inthe way how the types of political culture are distributed among students of state universities, whattheir attitude toward the authority is and how this attitude determines the formation of their civicculture.

    3. Students of three state universities (Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Ilia StateUniversity and Georgian Technical University) serve as the empirical base of our research. Economic Changes in Romania after Accession in the EU

    Scientific supervisor – Konstantine Shubitidze

    1. Historical review – in XXI century Europe encountered the new challenges. The socialist campfell apart in the 90s and the newborn countries started organizing their states and struggled for theirprosperity. The western neighbors of those countries were more developed and tightly connectedwith each other. So, the best way for former socialist countries to develop themselves was tointegrate in western European organizations. Among them was Romania, the country whichbecame the member of the European Union in 2007.

    2. Research question – What kind of changes appeared in Romanian economy after receiving themembership?

    3. Indicators – State debt, investment and trade balance. The mentioned indicators are veryinteresting, because they are connected with the country`s foreign economic trade growth, whichwas the main interest for Romania.

    4. Aim – We will try to analyze the peculiarities of Romanian economy`s growth. We will also usethe Belarus case to emphasize the advantages of Romanian economic changes compared to othercountries.

    5. Period – 2007-2014.

    6. Relevance of the topic – The Romanian case is relevant for Georgia which aspires to integrate inthe European society. The Romanian case can serve as an example of what to expect from themembership of the European Union, because Romania, like Georgia, became a capitalistic countrywith free market only in the 90s, to integrate with European countries and therefore, reach theeconomic prosperity.

    6. Hypothesis – The changes which took place in the Romanian economy after the Euro integrationare not sufficient for the country`s development.

    Observing and Avoiding Problems

Scientific supervisor – Master of Humanities Maia Tielidze

    1. The definition of “conflict’’ and its varieties. As a rule, conflict is a circumstance, when actorswith different opinions/positions try to take advantage over opponents / protect their own interests. It is important that conflict does not always mean a war and it may be followed by some positiveevents (social solidarity, creativity, improved communication…), but it is obvious that conflict ofinterests, values, religious or anything else so often transfers to armed conflict which can do moreharm than good for society.

    2. 5 basic changes that took place in armed conflicts after II World War. Realizing basic changescan help us to access to the main point of conflict and the ways for avoiding them.

    3. Reasons of the conflicts on the three levels of analysis (individual, state and international) willalso be discussed in the paper. The events which precede conflicts will become vivid what willmakes it easier to indentify them. What do we need it for? Identifying a tense situation earliergives a chance to prevent and deescalate circumstances before it turned into a conflict. The paperalso reflects Peace Agreements, its results, particular cases and the ways to avoid conflicts.

    Georgian Paradigms of Intra-Party Democracy

Scientific supervisor – Professor Malkhaz Matsaberidze

    1. Georgia is aspiring to classic parliamentary model and its one of the most important signs is adurable party system. Therefore, studying parties and party systems is more relevant nowadays.Although Georgia has more than 200 registered political parties, only some of them are activelyinvolved in the political process.

    2. Most Georgian political parties do not use mechanisms of intra-party democracy for organizing.Intra-party is a combination of political actions and procedures which considers equal involvement

  • 47

of all members of the party in the decision-making process and ensures subordination of the partyleader to the contingent activists. It supports the elite recruitment, decentralization, participationand strengthening of accountability and transparency principles within political parties.

    3. Hence, on the basis of structural analysis we decided to study the issues ensuring the intra-partydemocracy within the parliamentary parties. These parties are: “Georgian Dream -DemocraticGeorgia”, “National Forum”, “Georgian Conservative Party”, “Industry will save Georgia”, “GeorgianRepublican Party”, “Free Democrats - Our Georgia”, “United National Movement”, “New PoliticalCentre - Girchi”. On the basis of qualitative (classic), quantitative (content) analysis and theircomparative analysis of the provisions of Georgian parliamentary parties, we will study theirstructure by the proven criteria in political science: institutionalization, centralization, inclusion (J.Maio).

    4. Following this study, it will be possible to show the similarities and differences between Georgianparliamentary parties and therefore, to make empirical conclusions. Due to the fact that in mostparties the change of leadership is a rare case, the degree of inclusiveness and co-participation ofrank-and-file members is low and anaclisis to the leader is high. Low rate of intra-party democracyis anticipated what will lead to instability and differentiation of the political landscape.
