Searching desperately around their snow-covered pen, they spent their days looking for something, anything to eat, but found very little. Their owner had purchased the young alpacas after moving to the country, thinking that he would enjoy the novelty of having these unusual looking animals on his farm. Not understanding what it means to properly provide care for alpacas, he neglected them until they were near death. Thankfully a worried neighbor reported the situation, and the animals were seized by the Large Animal Protection Society with assistance by county police. And in that one act of kindness, Griffin and Spencer were saved, and began their journey to a new and wonderful life. Veterinarians who examined the alpacas found them to be extremely emaciated - Spencer was scored only a 1 on a body condition scale. Their ribs and backbones were prominent, their hooves were overgrown and their coats were very rough and dirty. Cruelty cases involving farm animals are often difficult to prosecute, as farm animals are exempt from the anti-cruelty laws in every state. Frequently, they will be resolved by requesting the owner to simply sign over custody of the animals, thereby avoiding an expensive trial that may be difficult to win, even with overwhelming evidence. This owner was unwilling to give up custody, however, and it took almost a year for the case to go to trial. In the meantime, Griffin and Spencer were enjoying fresh hay, a beautiful barn and pasture, and wonderful care by the LAPS staff and volunteers. They slowly began to gain weight, and became happy and healthy. Their hooves were trimmed and they were both neutered. When the trial date arrived, the judge thankfully ruled against their former owner. He was denied custody, and had to pay a fine for cruelty to animals. And finally, Griffin and Spencer were able to come home to Poplar Spring. Although they have only been at the sanctuary a few short weeks, we have already fallen in love with these beautiful, intelligent animals. They love to run in the fields, gliding smoothly on their long legs. They enjoy rolling in the dust like horses and grazing on the fresh green grass. They are the best of friends, and often vocalize and playfully wrestle with each other. Griffin and Spencer are still a little wary of humans, but are slowly beginning to trust us, and seem very happy with their new barn and pasture. Currently they are living with our rescued sheep, who aren’t quite sure what to think of them! They make wonderful guard animals and have already chased several foxes out of their area. We know they will have a long and happy life here, where they will be treated with nothing but love and kindness for the rest of their lives, and will never be hungry or neglected again. POPLAR SPRING

When the founder of theDavidsonville Wildlife

Sanctuary passed away lastyear, the organization was sadlyforced to close. Suddenly therewere many animals who neededa new home, both non-releasable wildlife and farmanimals who had been droppedoff over the years. Stevie andNicky were two of theseanimals, an unlikely pair whohad fallen in love, despite theirobvious differences.

Stevie, a very sweet JapaneseSilkie hen, was living alone atthe sanctuary when Nicky, awild pigeon, was brought in bya kind person who had foundhim injured and limping. Thesanctuary housed the twotogether while Nicky washealing from his injuries, andthey quickly became very bonded. After several weeks of healing, the daycame when Nicky was well enough tobe released back into the wild. Hecould fly perfectly, although he stillhad a slight limp, and should havebeen able to survive quite well on hisown.

But he didn’t want to leave – he wasin love. Volunteers recalled that

Stevie cried incessantly without him,and Nicky absolutely refused to go.Over and over, no matter where he wasreleased, he would fly back to the cagehe shared with Stevie, trying to get asclose to her as he possibly could. Thedecision was made to let him return tohis cage with the girlfriend he adored, and they have lived happily togetheras a couple ever since.

In Novemberwe received acall asking if wecould take thesetwo lovely birds, and we happilyagreed. Stevieand Nicky nowhave their ownprivate condo tocuddle togetherin every night, and they spendtheir dayscooing andstrolling and

A N I M A L P R O F I L E S

pecking in the grass, always side byside, enjoying each other’s company. If anyone holds Stevie, Nicky will flyand land on their arm or hoveraround, trying to protect and stay nearhis beloved partner.

This adorable couple is living proofthat you don’t have to look likesomeone else to love them. They willnow be able to live together theirwhole lives, and will never have to beseparated again. ■

Thank you to all those who remembered a special person or animal with a donation to Poplar Spring. This is a wonderful way tohonor a friend or loved one, and to help animals at the same time! We would like to dedicate this issue to Greg Reiter, a

wonderful and caring volunteer and friend of the animals, and to Dr. Kitty Raichura of Holistic Veterinary Healing, a kind andcompassionate veterinarian, who both tragically left this world way too soon. We are so grateful for the many donations for theanimals in their memory.

Happy Spring! The winterof 2016/17 was happily a

mild one at the sanctuary, with very little snow. We(and the animals) trulyappreciated this after lastwinter’s crazy blizzard! Thegrass never really diedcompletely, and the animalsenjoyed grazing all winterlong.

2017 is a milestone yearfor Poplar Spring - our 20-year anniversary as asanctuary! On January 1,1997, we took in our firstanimal, Petunia the pig, whohad been left to die as a pigletwhen a barn door fell on her.Since then we have rescuedhundreds of neglected andabandoned animals, cared forand rehabilitated them, andprovided them with a lovingpermanent home. We haveoffered educational tours forthousands of school children, families and individuals, showing visitors howawesome and deserving ofcare and respect farmanimals are. It is hard toimagine so much time has

gone by since we started – weare truly honored that somany friends and supportershave helped us to make the

sanctuary the success it istoday, with over 200 currentrescued residents, and manymore to come in the yearsahead. We are especiallythankful for our amazingstaff and volunteers, whowork incredibly hard everyday to provide the rescuedanimals with a wonderful life.

Last Summer we took intwo adorable piglets - Reo, ayoung Hampshire pig whowas purchased on the side of

the road in WestVirginia by a familywho believed hewas a mini pig, andCharlotte , a twoweek old Yorkshirepig who was savedby a kind motoristfrom a busyhighway where shehad fallen off of atruck. These twolittle ones wererescued within aweek of each otherand became bestfriends, much likeour other famous

pig duo, Wee Wee andScooter. Our newest residentis Calvin the rooster, who wasfound as a tiny chick,

desperately trying to staywith his mother, who waslying dead in the road aftershe was hit by a car. A kindperson driving by stopped tohelp, taking him to a nearbyvet who brought him toPoplar Spring. These luckyanimals are now happy andhealthy and will grow upknowing nothing but loveand care.

Our special events overthe past year were a bigsuccess (See back page andpage 3 for dates and info onthis year’s events.) Our 13thannual Run for the Animals, held in May, had a greatturnout. Over 700 peopleparticipated in the 5K Runand one mile Fun Walk, which was held again inbeautiful Wheaton Park. InJuly we once againparticipated in theMontgomery County FarmTour. Visitors to the farmenjoyed hay rides, our giantyard sale, and delicious veganfood from the awesomeEverlasting Life food truck. The weather this year for ourannual Open House andFundraiser in September wasperfect, and we were thrilled

to have vegan body builderTorre Washington as ourfeatured speaker. Manyfriends and local businessescontributed fabulous foodand drink for the event, andwe auctioned off over 400generously donated items inour silent auction. InNovember, our ThanksgivingWITH the Turkeys eventstarted out like a Summerday, and ended with a crazywind storm and 20 degreedrop in temperature! Despitethe bizarre weather, over 800people attended. The giantpotluck was full of deliciousplant based dishes, andeveryone enjoyed watchingthe turkeys and chickenseating at their own specialtables, and of course feedingthe pumpkins to the pigsafter the feast! A huge thanks

to everyone who donated, attended our events, andcontributed over the pastyear, we really couldn’t dothis without you! ■
