Diversity at Southern Illinois University Carbondale – Radio feature
Throughout Illinois’ history, southern Illinois has been the spot where the north meets
the south. In the early 20th century the school was before it’s time by allowing African
Americans to attend the then, normal school. Today, diversity is the trademark for the
troubled state school as enrollment plummets and racial tensions grow stronger. WSIU’s
Amelia Blakely takes a closer look at SIUC’s commitment to diversity in this 2-part series.

The Care Taking of Life – Radio feature and photo story
Kris Juul, born in Norway, came to America as a refugee after he fought against the
Nazi’s during World War II. In the states, he lived a quiet life working diligently to teach
young Americans lessons he learned during the Nazi occupation of Norway. In the spring
of 2018 he would’ve been the first allied veteran to be honored with the National Honor
Flight; but a few weeks before his flight he fell breaking his hip. This story tell’s Kris’
story, but also his families story of learning how accept circumstances that are out of
anyone’s control. ( Aired on 07/22/2019 on WSIU. )
