Well, we had a great District Convention last weekend in Bomaderry, 183 conventioneers with 84 delegates. My friends at the Jervis Bay Lions organised & presented a great convention. Thankyou to President Frank & his Club as well as Convention Chair Jeff Thomas & his committee. Now that I have the convention ‘out of the way’, I can concentrate on what I feel we need to address to ensure the continuing success of every Lions Club in our District. The time for change is upon us, too many of our Clubs are dwindling in numbers, still doing great projects in our communities & towns, but placing increasing stresses & pressures on their overworked Lions. We need to act now, so that our service and good works will carry on well into the future. It was Barack Obama who stated; “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek”. We all know that Clubs are under added pressure, we all talk about it, we all wait for someone else to fix it, or resign ourselves to the fact that the affliction is terminal, and we are simply awaiting the death of our Lions Club, it’s just a matter of ti me! Well, I don’t accept that! Our International President, Gudrun Yngvadottir stated to we incoming DG’s in Las Vegas that; “You can not change the di- rection the wind blows, but you can alter your sails to take advantage of that wind”. We don’t need to change too much, we can add Lions members associated with our Clubs by attaching a Club Branch. This can be a group of like minded service folk who have a different agenda/outlook than the original Club, without necessarily altering the ‘historic fabric’ of the original Club. These new Lions folk, although having their own direction could be calle d upon to assist the original Club when required, thus weaving a framework of friendship between the two sets of Lions, which may form a closer affiliation. Lions, now is the time for change! Work toward change now! Don’t wait for someone else to make the change in the future. We are running out of time! The importance of new member orientation cannot be emphasised enough. The information presented during orientation pro-
vides a foundation for new members. It helps them understand how the club functions, what their role will be and gives them the
big picture of their district and the association. When new members are properly informed, they are more likely to feel comfort-
able with the club, become actively involved in club activities and remain in Lions for years. The following materials are avail-
able to help conduct Lions New Member Orientation:
The New Member Orientation Training Guide (ME-13) helps the orientation trainer plan for new member orientation and
gives trainer tips along the way to successfully conduct new member orientation.
New members follow the orientation trainer through the New Member Orientation Guide (ME-13a) during orientation.
Members can also use the guide as a reference during their time as a Lion.
The New Member Orientation PowerPoint (ME-13b) provides the orientation trainer with a presentation template to fol-
low when conducting new member orientation. Trainers should customise the presentation so it is relevant to their club.
The Basic Mentoring Guide (ME-11) can be used in conjunction with new member orientation to ensure the new member
successfully completes both programs.

Mentoring Program as part of Membership Orientation The objective of the Lions Mentoring Program is to help every member achieve the goal of better serving his or her community.
It does so through a program of personal development that helps members realise the potential that their unique skills and
knowledge offer. The Mentoring Program prepares them for leadership in clubs, in the association and in their personal lives as
well. For Lions Clubs International, this means more hands and better service for the people who need it most.
The Lions Mentoring Program is completed in two parts, basic and advanced.
Basic Mentoring Program
The Basic Mentoring Program is completed in two levels:
Level One: The Responsibility of Being a Lion
The first level of the Basic Mentoring Program is devoted to developing an understanding of who Lions are, our vision of
humanitarian service, the traditions, the organisational structure and the responsibility of being a Lions club member. It
should be a goal of every club that all new Lions complete the Level One in their first three months of membership.
Level Two: Relationships
The second level of the Basic Mentoring Program is for developing relationships and organisational skills in preparation for
leadership at the club level. Level Two should ideally be completed before the first anniversary of becoming a Lion.
Advanced Mentoring Program
The Lions Advanced Mentoring Program involves the mentee actively serving in Lions leadership roles. Mentees focus on
achieving results and developing more Lion leaders. The Advanced Mentoring Program should be completed by all Lions who
hope to serve as leaders at the district level or above. The Advanced Mentoring Program is completed in two levels:
Level One: Results
This level helps mentees develop leadership and managerial skills. The mentee will have an excellent understanding of what,
how and why to successfully conduct a service activity. Completion of this level provides a stepping-stone for accepting
a leadership role within the club.
Level Two: Replication
This level concentrates on the mentee’s role in developing others for leadership in the association and for humanitarian ser-
vice. It ensures long-range growth and can serve as a basis for leadership within the district structure. This phase can be
augmented with additional training at district level and at area forums.
