Education is the means to the answer to all questions." -- William Allin The English Department at Greenwood International School aims at developing the required skills needed by the students. Students are given opportunities to get involved in activities which are designed to cater to their educational and personal development. The curriculum manual this year has been reconstructed and aims at achieving high standard for our students. The Department provides support program to help students and create an atmosphere whereby students can do their best in order to achieve our standard. Aims: 1. To produce gains in accuracy, reading rate and comprehension. 2. To improve listening skills, recitation skills and skills in retelling stories with an emphasis on story, Grammar (setting, character and important events). 3. To understand the concept of word and construct meaning from shared text, illustrations, graphics and charts. 4. To develop skills in using knowledge of related words to extend vocabulary. 5. To improve reading skills by reading aloud accurately and with appropriate pacing, Intonation and Expression. 6. To connect information and events in texts to life and life to text experiences. 7. To improve writing skills by applying the rules of the writing process: Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Proofreading and Publishing. 8. To develop skills in spelling independently by using pre-phonetic knowledge, sounds of the Alphabet and knowledge of letter names. 9. To encourage students to express and exchange ideas and feelings freely and to share assignments orally. 10. Develop interaction skills by working with other classmates.(group work, class activities, pair & share ) The following is the break-up of English marks for the Elementary department. Final Term Assessment is conducted at the end of the school year.
Syllabus: An outline of the syllabus will be uploaded onto the website. It would include the break- up of the syllabus over the three terms and would also give you the guidelines to follow in the upcoming months for the subject.
Reading: The Elementary reading program includes activities that promote language growth in reading listening, speaking), thinking and writing. The students read age appropriate fiction and nonfiction material with understanding and fluency. Teachers and parents are involved during school (reading program) and after school (support program) to help students achieve the required standards. Poetry: Students will be given poems to be memorized and will be graded by the end of the week. Library : Students will visit the library with their reading files once a week to exchange the library books. Activities: Teaching and learning in the elementary section will be done through group activities to develop interactive skills. Rewards in the form of house points will be given to the deserving team. Research : Topics will be given in the homework plan along with the date of submission. Ample time would be given to complete the work. Every child has to take deadlines seriously. Failing to do so will result in the deduction of marks.
Notebooks: Two notebooks (Four lines) have been given for English. One for Vocabulary and Grammar, the other for Writing and Spelling. Students will be graded on these books for the presentation and submission of work. It is of utmost importance that the notebooks are kept neat and tidy.
ASSESSMENT : After completing the story students will be evaluated on the following: 1. Spelling 2. Reading 3. Grammar 4. Vocabulary 5. Phonics/Decoding 6. Comprehension 7. Creative-writing 8. Research 9. Poetry 10. Listening Ongoing Assessment may consist of multiple choice, direct questions, critical thinking questions and/or open ended questions. Report and Progress : Parents will receive a report to get the feedback about the performance of the child in the subject. Decline in the performance will be followed by a walk in meeting arranged by the school for the parents to talk to the concerned teacher.
