Dear Fellow Members,

I know you and your families are just as tired of Old Man Winter as I am. Let’s hope Sir Walter Wally and Punxsutawney Phil were right and spring is indeed arriving early this year!

We are very excited to welcome our new Director of Golf Bud Taylor for his first day at the Club on March 1st. Please join us for a Welcome Reception on Wednesday, March 2nd from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Irving Park Ballroom. You will be able to meet Bud in a casual setting, while enjoying some light hors d'oeuvres, beer and wine.

Our wonderful staff is gearing up for the warmer weather with lots of outdoor activities as their reports that follow in this newsletter will attest. Tennis is returning to Irving Park, the Blue Dolphins Swim Team is back in the water, Men and Women’s golf events kick off in March, plus our Youth Activities Director Lindsay Pegg has planned a full slate of both indoor and out-door activities for our youngsters including our annual Easter Egg Hunt, Glow Golf and much, much more. Your Club is very much on the move!

While we are excited about getting outside, we will have plenty to do inside as well. Our Fitness staff has planned an exciting array of activities that will appeal to everyone as we prepare for the summer swimsuit season. It’s a good thing, too, as our culinary staff has been working hard to develop a broad offering of delicious meals to meet our member’s tastes. You are encouraged to try out some of the new special menu items that have been introduced by our talented collection of expert chefs.

As always, there is much going on behind the scenes and your Board and Committees are working diligently to ensure your Club is operating smoothly, effectively and efficiently. The General Manager Search Committee

chaired by Gail Bernstein is moving steadily forward in the effort to find a new GM/COO for GCC and to allow Interim General Manager Earl Anderson to return to his much deserved retirement status. Mr. Anderson continues to provide a steadying hand to our talented management team and we are all grateful for his commitment to our Club, its staff and its members. The Master Planning effort headed by Holt Gwyn is likewise progressing steadily. Thoughtful input from staff members has been very beneficial as the plans continue to be fine-tuned to meet the future needs of our membership. I would remind you that nothing will be final until the entire membership has a chance to provide feedback and suggestions. Currently, the planning team is compiling data on costs, projected usage and Club demographics to factor into the overall concept. As has been said before, the Master Plan is not a project, but a guide to future projects that will be selected and approved by our membership. Lastly, I cannot let an opportunity pass not to remind you of the importance of inviting your friends and business associates to become members of Greensboro Country Club. We are fortunate to be the premier private country club in the Triad and it is because of the quality of our members and their families. However, as a member-by-invitation-only Club, GCC cannot use traditional advertising methods to bring new members to our Club. Only through your efforts can we replace those that relocate from Greensboro, or otherwise leave our ranks. Our Membership Committee does a wonderful job, but it takes an active and engaged membership to keep our numbers strong and our future assured. Commit to sponsor a new member in 2016!

See you at the Club!

Welcome New Members!Membership MessageOur Club is off to a strong start in 2016! Typically, January and February represent seasonally slower months regarding new membership; however, since the time of my last writing, we have accepted four new and well-qualified members and have three up for posting. I want to thank the staff, the Membership Committee and all the members who are supporting the Club by sponsoring or endorsing new applicants. While we have good momentum into the new year, we have had six resignations year-to-date (primarily due to non-use, illness or death – including Mr. R.D. Douglas, Jr., our oldest member who was a part of our GCC family for 66 years). New members help sustain our capital model and are essential to the capital budget, which allows us to enjoy, improve, renovate and expand the wonderful facilities we all enjoy. Together, we need to assume the responsibility to grow our membership. We have several events coming up, such as Chef John’s Wine Dinner, our Spring Carnival at the Farm and any of the themed Tuesday family nights that would make an excellent opportunity to invite guests or their families to showcase the wide variety of activities at GCC. This is only a sample of the many opportunities available for our wide variety of members. As you continue to enjoy the many benefits of membership at GCC, I ask that you consider extending an invitation of membership to a friend or associate whom you feel would also enjoy the many benefits of membership in our fine Club. Having a healthy and participative membership is the lifeblood of any great club. Please let me, the Membership Committee or Brittany Mitchell, our Membership Director, know if you have any questions regarding how someone can become a member of our Club or how we can help showcase our Club to a prospective member.

From the Chef Bring on spring and greetings from your culinary team! It’s almost time to put away your crock-pot and start thinking about firing up the grill once again. We have had

a busy winter with many fun opportunities for mem-bers of all ages. We have had great support from all of you with our new Tuesday Family Nights in the Family Grille. We have more fun ideas planned for March and April so bring the gang and come out to eat and play!

Spring is a time of transition, and for many years the GCC culinary team has had very little turnover. This year we have had many key members reach out to take new opportunities. I embrace change and I would like to introduce some new members to our team that I am very excited about.

In the Family Grille and 1909, our new Chef de Cuisine is Jerome Lewis. Jerome has been with the Club for eight years and has worked his way up from Garde Manger to Grill, Sauté, Sous Chef and now he is our new Chef de Cuisine. Jerome recently graduated

from the Art Institute of Raleigh/Durham with a degree in Culinary Arts. He is a wonderful cook and teacher. He has been in the trenches of the many kitchens here at the Club and brings a lot of knowledge about the members to help with consistency, while expanding our efforts.

Tim Thompson is our new Chef de Cuisine in the Sunset Room. Tim is new to country clubs but he has wonderful experience including a position as the former Executive Chef at Marisol Restaurant. During his tenure there, he won first place in the Fire in the

Triad culinary competition in 2014. Tim is passionate

about farm-to-table products and utilizing the best ingredients. We look forward to seeing the various techniques and flavors that Tim will be bringing to the table in months to come.

Our new Executive Pastry Chef is Lucia Bobby. Lucia joined our team in January. Lucia and her husband John (Executive Chef at Noble’s Grill in Winston-Salem) won Fire in the Triad in 2013, knocking off our GCC team in the semi-final round. Lucia graduated

from Le Cordon Bleu in Orlando, Florida and most recently worked at the Ritz Carlton in Charlotte.

This calendar year the Board of Directors has approved the financial support to build a new bakery in the old laundry room near the rear building entrance to the Family Grille. The bakery is slated to be complete by mid-August, and I will keep you all posted as we move along with this project. This will give us the adequate space to create the 40,000 pastries produced every year for private functions, a la carte dining as well as the many buffets and specialty to go items that we produce. We will also be adding a third support person for Lucia and Laurie adding a focus on specialty cakes and pastries. The other benefit of this project will be the positive impact on the space in our current banquet kitchen. We currently share the same space and equipment and this move will greatly affect our ability to produce in a more efficient manor.

Come dine with us!Chef Greg

"The Judgment of Greensboro"Wednesday, May 25th6:30 p.m. | BallroomOn May 26, 1976, in what is now referred to as "The Judgment of Paris," California winemakers poured a touch of the unexpected into a tasting that many thought was meant as a publicity stunt - a blind tasting where a panel of esteemed judges chose two up-start California wines over France’s best counterparts. George M. Taber ("The New York Times") was the only reporter present at the historic tasting and judgment.

Only one day away from the 40th anniversary, we invite GCC members to step back in time for a taste of this event on Wednes-day, May 25th. The one and only George Taber will be present to share his stories and celebrate the legacy of these amazing wines. We will raise a glass (or several) during a modern day blind tasting using only wines that were represented during the historic event. To put your taste buds to the test, we will conduct our very own “judgment” while enjoying a multiple course dinner created by our culinary team.

Tennis Update

As we get ready for the upcoming outdoor season, it is always a good idea to review nutrition and health tips as we move toward warmer weather on the courts.

Competitive tennis can take a toll on one’s body, especially as the weather gets warmer. Tennis training should focus on physical training, high-energy foods and adequate hydration. Here are some tips to help you prepare for tennis this spring:

Physical fitness training for tennis should include:• Flexibility Training• Speed & Agility Training• Strength Training• Endurance Training

Proper nutrition for match play should include:• Pre-Match Diet - High carbohydrates to supply

energy reserves, moderate in protein and low in fat is recommended (e.g. fruit yogurt or bananas, smoothies made with fresh fruit, power bars, bagels, pretzels or saltine crackers).

• Post-Match Diet – Consume food and drinks that replenish muscle energy and electrolytes lost in competition (e.g. pasta, salads, rice or energy drinks).

• Hydration – It is very important to hydrate adequately before a match. 20 ounces of water two hours before is encouraged and consume water during match, about five ounces every changeover.

We hope this will help you prepare for competition this year during warmer weather. We will do our best to get the outdoor courts ready by mid-March provided we have good weather. We hope for warm weather as it is imperative to assist in the preparation of our clay courts. See you on the courts!

Golf UpdateOur Men’s Tournament Program has some exciting elements for 2016. Be sure to check the website for the calendar of events for golf activities this year. The Golf Committee is introducing new formats and events destined to be enjoyed by all. Here are some of the highlights for the upcoming season:

On Saturday, March 19th, the annual Men’s Breakfast Tour-nament will be at the Farm course. It is one of the most popular events of the year and is a great opportunity to meet other members. It begins with a specially prepared breakfast buffet in the Farm clubhouse and discussion from our new Director of Golf, Bud Taylor. Following the breakfast, the teams generated by the Committee in an equitable handicap distribution, play a Shamble format. The top four teams in the Player’s Pool continue in a shootout with Captain’s Choice format. Call the Farm Golf Pro Shop by Thursday, March 17th to register.

Night Golf is April 9th! The Glow Golf events were such a hit last year, we have brought them back for 2016. Ladies and gentlemen will play beginning at dusk with lighted golf balls, flagsticks illuminated for direction, holes with light rings; in a team scramble that includes some fun variations to the play. Teams consist of any member who enters as a single or in couples.

Men’s Triple Crown Tournament is April 23rd. Find a part-ner to navigate the Irving Park course and play six holes each of captain’s choice, better ball and alternate shot. Event is a tournament package event.

Irving Park is a great venue for the annual Men’s Match Play Championship on April 30th & May 1st. Saturday morning and afternoon matches followed by finals (semi-final and fi-nals for Championship Flight) Sunday.

Men’s Summer League is a weekday team championship with the winning team travelling to Forsyth for a League Championship playoff. Matches are played Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings during the summer. Registration is from April 1st through May 15th with the team draft party Wednesday, May 18th.

Generation Gap is May 7th. This was one of our most pop-ular and unique events of the 2015 season. A junior golfer teams with an adult who is not a family relative. This event is designed to pair some of our outstanding juniors with our lady and men golfers in a Four-Ball format.

Mark Your Calendar!President’s Cup | July 23rd - 24th With the tutelage of Chairman Ryan Gioffre, the Member-Member Championship has moved another notch upward in popularity. With an evening stag night on Thursday, 9 Hole Par 3 Tournament on Friday, Saturday shotgun, pool-side dinner and entertainment and a later start Sunday shotgun to conclude in style. It is a fun weekend for all.

Ladies and Men’s Club Championship | August 26th - 28th The ladies play Friday and Saturday and men play Saturday and Sunday in these annual stroke play events. Championship Flight is a 54 hole competition with the first round qualifying on Friday, August 26th with a cut to the low 16 and ties.

Men’s Member-Guest | October 13th - 15th Be sure to start thinking about your partner for this year’s Men’s Member-Guest. This amazing event has been moved to the fall to allow you to show off your courses in peak con-dition. The Committee is always adding new features each year to amplify this premier men’s event. Field is limited to the first 60 teams who enter. Registration will be posted in the Men’s locker room starting June 1st.

Player of the YearCongratulations to our 2015 Champion, Jay Kirkpatrick. In a hotly contested skirmish, Jay was the victor over Cabell Poindexter. For 2016, the more you play the greater the chance you have to be in the ten man field playing for honor and big rewards. Participation and finish will be the factors for members to receive points for entry into the Player of the Year Shootout. For each event played, each member will receive POY points and those who finish in the top ten will receive additional points. After the season ending GCC Pro-Am, the top ten POY point leaders will be determined to participate in a Shootout in December. Prizes will be awarded to the top four winners in the shootout.

Get Results!"I never hit a shot, not even in practice, without having a very sharp, in-focus picture of it in my head. First I see the ball where I want it to finish, nice and white and sitting up high on the bright green grass.

Then the scene quickly changes, and I see the ball going there: its path, trajectory, and shape, even its behavior on landing. Then there is a sort of fade-out, and the next scene shows me making the kind of swing that will turn the previous images into reality."

- Jack Nicklaus This quote tells us Jack was a visual learner and used colorful comprehensive and extremely vivid, detailed pictures to prepare himself to hit every shot on the course or range. He used how he learned best (visually) to help him play his best (18 Major Championships). He also practiced with purpose. He knew exactly what he needed to work on and how to work on it. Finally he was completely confident and knew precisely the golf swing he needed in order to create to produce the shots he visualized. Jack saw the shot he felt would produce the best outcome (generally a high towering left to right shot) and then affirmed the swing he knew would produce the exact shot he pictured. Imagine the results you could get in your golf game if you knew exactly how to swing the club, enabling you to hit the shots you wanted. And imagine the results you could get if you understood how to do it in a way that best fit your optimal learning style. Your GCC professional staff would like to help you get the results you want in the game and bring out your best Jack Nicklaus. Please look for e-mails in the coming months for clinics, schools, junior programs and sessions to help you get results. To schedule a lesson please call the Farm Golf Pro Shop at (336) 288-4470.

Spring GolfingFor golfers in the Carolinas, March denotes the beginning of another golfing season. For golf course superintendents, March signifies a time to wrap up winter improve-ment projects and begin to shift strategies and resources more towards cultural management and

course conditioning. By early March we hope to have several projects completed. In addition to the routine winter equipment maintenance and the revitalization of golf course accessories, other projects the staff has been involved with over the last few months include several tree removals, grinding stumps and a few select new plantings. Several of the tree removals will eventually require sodding the remaining bare areas with warm-season grasses. This work will be completed once we can get suitable sod from our suppliers, which will most likely be in April or May depending on the weather.

Two of the biggest cultural management tasks that take place in March are aerification and weed control. Greens are slower to heal during this time of the year due to cool soil temperatures but we aerify early in an attempt to have the greens in their best possible condition for the majority of the spring season.

March is also the time of the year to begin putting down your pre-emergent weed control products for summer weeds. Our goal is to have our all our turf treated by the time the dogwoods begin to bloom. Between the two courses we treat nearly 230 acres of turf with weed control products and it takes us nearly three weeks from start to finish.

How’s the Bermudagrass? It’s during this time of the year everyone begins asking whether or not I believe we have lost any Bermudagrass due to cold temperatures. As I am

writing this letter in late January it is still too early to say. What I can say is that the short cut Bermuda was as green as I have ever seen it in early January and then we experienced a fairly cold snap, where the lows dropped into the mid-teens on three consecutive days. This is not a particularly good set of circumstances, but the temperatures to date are nowhere close to the level we experienced in 2015.

As it stands now, if we avoid single digit temperatures or a really late cold snap over the next few weeks (February to early March), I believe the only areas that may suffer will be the very worst of our poorly drained and shady areas, which is all but to be expected in our region.
