Message from Mrs Edge

Dear parents, carers and pupils, it gives me great pleasure to be able to write to

you to highlight all of the wonderful things that have been happening this term.

Firstly and very importantly a huge well done must go to all of the students

involved in exams this year. Without doubt this has been a very stressful time

but the students have coped tremendously well and have used the vast

majority of their own time attending intervention sessions in school every

evening, on Saturdays and during every school holiday. The commitment and

tenacity they are showing is impressive and I am confident their hard work will

pay off this summer when the results are published.

On the same lines can I thank parents for supporting the academy with this and

remind you that we do have additional sessions during the May break and all

students will be expected to attend. Following May half term all year 11

students will have a bespoke timetable outlining the sessions they are required

to attend. However, on some occasions students will have permission to remain

at home at various points in the week, during which time they should be

revising.

In term 6 year 11 students will be released from school on the date

of their last exam, providing they have completed

all outstanding work for their vocational subjects. Next

term we will also wish our year 10 students the best of

luck as they complete their work experience. This is a

great opportunity for the boys to sample the world of

work and start thinking about their own possible career

paths. As you know our focus is heavily on getting the

boys ready to be employable and responsible young men

and this is the next stage in their journey. It is also our

aim to offer every student in year 10 a professional

mentor from the world of business, should they wish to

avail of this exciting opportunity. If this is something you

are keen to explore further for your son please do not

hesitate to get in touch at [email protected]

I would like to take this opportunity to say well done to

all those students who have represented the academy in

the wide range of sporting fixtures we have had this

term. Well done specifically to the school basketball

team and cricket team who finished highly in the

Medway Secondary School games. A special mention

also to the Rowing team who attended the national

finals and as a result two Greenacre Academy students

are national champions!

Congratulations to the students and Miss Murphy on

winning the ‘Solutions for the Planet’ competition this

week. The team are now in the National Finals in the

Palace of Westminster this July.

Message from Mrs Edge

A big well done to all the students who took part in the

academy talent show last week; to see and hear boys

acting, dancing and singing truly is a delight and takes

courage and confidence. I take my hat off to you boys!

At the moment we are making huge efforts to keep you

informed of academy news via Twitter and Facebook. If

you have not already added us you can do so at

@GreenacreAcad and @greenacreacademy. Every day

we post pictures and messages and this is a great way to

keep up-to-date. You should have also received a copy of

the Greenacre Academy Trust newsletter which outlines

all of the fabulous work going on across the three

schools in the Trust.

I would like to thank all parents/carers for your

continued support of the Academy. The boys continue to

represent themselves and the academy well and we

have seen improvements in all areas of behaviour

including uniform and equipment. Going forward next

term we expect this good work to continue

Finally I would like to wish you all a restful break and

look forward to seeing the students again in term 6.

Warmest regards

Mrs Edge

Engineering success at Greenacre

The department are pleased to announce that three

more students have been added to the ever increasing

list of apprentice success stories! Year 13's Jack Beeney,

Ethan Anderson and Jack Gwynne are the latest NVQ

Level 2 qualified Students to be offered apprenticeships.

Phoenix tooling in Gillingham, who specialise in CNC

machinery and toolmaking, liaised with the department

to entice any potential apprentices to apply to the

company. With only 2 places available, the competition

was tough, however Simon at Phoenix was so impressed

with the three lads, that he offered all of them an

apprenticeship.

Simon commented; "I have never been so impressed

with Students as I have been with the three lads. They

are a credit to the School, and all who have taught

them".

They will commence a 4 year apprenticeship, gaining an

NVQ Level 3, and a HNC qualification as part of their

training. On completion, they will be fully qualified

Mechanical Engineers, skilled at toolmaking and

maintenance.

All the best lads, keep in touch!

Mr Hake

KS3 English

This has been another busy term for our year 7 and 8

students. Year 7 have been studying the play Much Ado

About Nothing, a comedy by William Shakespeare.

Despite initially finding the language quite daunting, the

year 7s have challenged themselves and have developed

a good understanding of the plot, characters and

context. Students who have done particularly well in

year 7 this term include: Aiden Coleman, Connor Dale,

Nathan Ireland, Tyrone Clarke, Ethan Cherry, Josh West,

Matthew Neal and Kristiyan Dahlev. Well done boys!

Our year 8s this term have been tackling Macbeth. They

have shown a great understanding of the context,

themes, characters and plot of the play and have

produced some fantastic pieces of work, particularly

when exploring the themes of supernatural within the

play. It has been wonderful to see so many students

enjoying the work of William Shakespeare.

Students in year 8 who have done particularly well

include: Charlie Sanders, Houssain Majid, Robert Wood,

Jack Cooper, Jack Liddle, Tyrone Loveridge, Jack

Burnham, Harry Parker, Troy Terry, Sam Sharpe, Adam

Kirby, Alfie House, Ethan Wadmore, Daniel Olawuyi,

Michael Manville and Lewis Ireland. Keep up the good

work!

Skills for Life

Coming up ………

We have assemblies lined up for next term from the

NHS , a Public Relations company and our local MP,

Tracey Crouch.

More news!

Skills for Life – Pupil Survey.

We are collating the results of a recent survey which has

asked the students all about Skills for Life and what they

would like to see and what help they would like in the

future. We will let everyone know the findings shortly.

Mentoring Scheme

From the results of the pupil survey we will be putting

together a new scheme for year 10 students, involving

external business people. We will share an update

on this in the next newsletter.

We have had a great few months with some really

interesting careers assemblies as part of our on-going

Skills for Life programme:

The British Army

Colour Sergeant IP O’Grady came in to present to our

year 9 and 10 students giving them a great insight into

the many different careers available within the Army.

Alex Auger

- The Juice Executive

Alex gave a very inspiring talk to the students and

explained how at the age of 24, she started her own

local business from her parents’ garage and in a very

short space of time, has grown it into a business turning

over 1.5 million a year.

David Dein

– Former Vice Chairman, Arsenal Football Club

We were honoured to welcome David Dein to address

our year 10 students. David spoke about his career and

achievements in Football – joining the Arsenal Board in

1983 and serving on numerous UEFA and FIFA

Committees. David illustrated the skills he learnt whilst

at school and how he used them throughout his

successful career. This tied in perfectly with the schools

Skills for Life values set out in the acrostic, EMPLOY ME –

Excellence, Manners, Perseverance, Listening,

Organised, You… Motivation, Employability.

Kerry Allen

– Ministry of Justice

Kerry gave a fascinating talk to the students about

working for the IT department within the Ministry of

Justice and the projects they work on.

A group of students and their six teachers boarded the

coach apprehensive about the long journey ahead but

excited about what lay in store over the next 9 days.

Secretly I believe I was more excited than any of the

boys as the places we were visiting are key to my family

history.

Once on the coach the long journey commenced, We

sailed through the Eurotunnel and began our journey

towards Berlin. Being on a small coach with a group of

year 9 -11 boys might seem like the trip from hell but to

the teachers’ joy we were with an absolutely amazing

groups of boys who were a true delight to be travelling

with and most importantly did let us sleep.

After our first night on the coach we woke somewhat

refreshed knowing we would reach Berlin late afternoon

that day. At our first stop the boys had to contend with

swapping out the pounds for Euros. This went

remarkably smoothly with the boys making all of their

maths teachers proud.

Once we arrived in Berlin we went to the youth hostel

where the boys were broken down into groups and sent

off to explore their rooms. Once we had time to settle in

we went for our first experience of Germany with a

guided walk with Mr Moore whose wealth of knowledge

amazed and delighted us.

The following morning we went off to Check Point

Charlie where we visited the museum. We were able to

learn all about the cunning ways people crossed the

Berlin Wall hidden from the authorities. Many of the

boys bought their own little piece of the Berlin Wall as a

memento from the trip. We also visited the topography

of terror, which is located on the site of the former

headquarters of the Gestapo and the SS.

The following day with heavy hearts we got onto the

coach to travel to Sachsenhausen concentration camp

which was used primarily for political prisoners.

Although it was never intended as a death camp, with

the construction of a gas chamber and ovens it did

facilitate the extermination of a number of prisoners.

This first hand experience of being in this place on such a

cold day really brought to life the extreme conditions so

many faced. The boys were able to see what living

quarters were like as well as some of the brutality that

occurred. After a morning with such historical

significance we moved back into Berlin where we visited

the Berlin Wall and Holocaust memorial, again our boys

showed just how amazing they are as all throughout the

day the respect they showed was fantastic.

As our time in Berlin neared it end we enjoyed a lovely

evening back at the hostel packing up ready to move

onto Prague the following day.

We arrived in Prague the following day in the afternoon

to quite a plush hotel, the boys were given the

opportunity to explore and settle into their new rooms.

Many opted to use the swimming pool and gym facilities

at the hotel having a lovely break from all the travelling.

We then explored the local area with many of the boys

experiencing their first taste of local supermarkets.

In the morning we headed for a guided tour around the

centre of Prague with a native tour guide. She was able

Checkpoint Charlie

Page 8: greenacre academy - newsletter - the Skills For Life Trust

to learn from. After this we moved onto Auschwitz II

which was a major part of the “Final Solution”. We saw

the notorious main entrance, which is depicted in the

famous Schindler’s List, which the boys had previously

watched before going to Auschwitz. The sheer scale of

the place is difficult to comprehend, with the network of

barracks to house so many. The memorial pays tribute to

each and every nation affected during this time making

you realise just how wide-spread the effect of this was.

Again at this point I have to pay tribute to the thoughtful

and decent manner our boys conducted themselves in

during their entire visit.

On our final day we began with a trip to Schindler’s

factory first moving through the Jewish quarter where a

striking memorial of chairs is displayed. Schindler’s

factory provided so much more than just information on

the history of the factory. It looked day-by-day at the

progression of the war and it’s impact on Poland

providing sights and smells for us to take in.

After a final walk through the streets of Krakow it was

time to make our way back to the coach for the journey

home.

This truly unique experience was made all the more

amazing by the wonderful students on this trip.

to build up a history of Prague and show us all of the

sights finishing at the Charles Bridge, which allows you to

cross into the Old town. We then relaxed and sampled

the local cuisine or at least some of us did with others

opting for a McDonalds.

Although time was short in Prague it offered a wonderful

insight into their history. We made our way back to the

hotel where yet again we packed up ready to set off for

our final destination Krakow.

On the coach many of our boys learnt how to greet

someone in Polish, a skill that they put to use at once in

Poland. On arrival in Krakow the boys separated for the

final time into their groups for their rooms. We sat down

to a lovely meal followed by a spot of bowling in the

private confines of the hotel’s own bowling alley.

The next morning we made our way to Auscwitz

concentration camp in the town of Oświęcim where we

visited both Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II – Birkenau.

We were given a guided tour of Auschwitz I (originally a

Polish army barracks), where you are able to see the

area where prisoners were housed and the conditions in

which they lived. This harrowing experience helps to

serve as a constant reminder of the atrocities that

occurred and provides a valuable life experience for us

Year 10 Work Experience

Good luck to year 10 on their work experience after half

term.

Year 10 students will be starting work experience after

half term in businesses all over Kent and Medway. We

would like to wish them every success in making a great

impression on their temporary employers.

Greenacre Academy has been running work experience

for many years and we are always so proud to hear of

the great impression that students make and some boys

are offered real employment as a result of their work

experience. This is a great opportunity to pick up new

skills and to showcase what they have learnt at school.

During their work experience placement, a member of

staff will visit them to see how they are getting on.

If parents of year 10 students have any questions they

should contact Mr Wise on the main academy phone

number.

Cycle Safety As the weather improves, we are delighted by how

many of our students are taking advantage of the

sunshine and cycling to and from school. However, we

have been made aware of a few instances in which

students have not been paying as much attention to

the road as they should and have come close to being

involved in an accident. We have held assemblies to

underline the importance of road safety and

frequently refer to it in the morning, but we would ask

that you reiterate this message at home. If your son/

ward cycles to school please have a chat with him

about the need to cycle safely to and from school,

being mindful of other road users.

STEM For the past 3 terms a small group of 14 boys have been

working on a STEM project.

STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating

students in four specific disciplines — science,

technology, engineering and mathematics — in an

interdisciplinary and applied approach.

The project the boys have been working on is called

Solutions for the Planet. They took part in a big ideas day

which allowed part of year 7 and 8 to work as a team, to

develop an innovative Big Idea to solve a sustainability

problem which they can later enter into the national

Solutions for the Planet competition. Solutions for the

Planet is a science, technology, engineering and maths

programme which develops knowledge of sustainability

and entrepreneurial skills which is supported by our

business partners. These companies provide their

employees as mentors to the programme.

14 boys from 7A have managed to secure themselves a

place in the semi-finals and have been working with

companies such as SGN and Tarmac to develop their

ideas.

The 14 boys are now attending the semi-finals at

Greenwich University Medway Campus on Wednesday

24th May and competing against 10 different schools

from the south East area.

The three teams entering are:

The Green Musketeers this group consists of Lucien

Moreton, Ellis Diddams, Harry Day, James Shea, Michael

Mcdonagh and Lyioma Ekhosuehi.

Really Radical Resources this group consists of Aaron

Tingley, Iliyan Benazza and Mayo Oluwashoa.

Cycle Spy this group consists of Alfie Knapp, Kye Levon,

Harley Wood, Joseph Chesney and Levi Jackson-Hunt.

I would like to say a huge well done to all the teams that

entered and good luck to the boys continuing on to the

semi-finals, hopefully we can make the finals in

London and take your ideas nationwide.

Science Year 11

Year 11 have made a fantastic start to their exams and

have shown resilience maintaining their revision.

Congratulations to all of the students that have

completed Core Science!

Students studying Additional and Triple Science need to

continue their revision for these exams which begin after

half term. Keep practicing past papers, completing

quizzes online or using the Temple app to support this.

There is also a revision session during half term for

students to attend on Thursday 1st June from 12pm. If

you are unable to attend this revision materials are

available on the science website for students use.

Year 10

This term students in year 10 have completed their

external mock exams for Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

The boys have shown great maturity and perseverance

with these mocks which were their first experience of

science exams. These will reflect the exams they will sit

in the summer of year 11 so were an excellent learning

opportunity. We will receive results for the externally

marked mock exams in September and look forward to

the positive results.

Year 9

Students in Year 9 are continuing to challenge

themselves while studying the new GCSE 9-1 curriculum.

The boys have built up their resilience in completing

exam questions and this is developing their experience

for their exams in year 11. The boys are also completing

Core Practicals in lessons that they will need to be able

to talk about and answer question on in the future.

Some of these include:

1. Creating a microscope slide of onion cells

2. Investigating osmosis in potatoes

3. Producing copper sulphate crystals

4. Neutralisation reactions

5. Refraction in glass

Key Stage 3

Huge congratulations to all KS3 students who have

continued to work extremely hard this term.

Year 7 have been studying reproduction, acids and alkalis

and energy changes. They have been using formulas to

calculate the efficiency of devices and how this can help

save money, they have shown great maturity when

looking at the male and female reproductive systems

and have carried out experiments to explore if everyday

products are acids or alkalis.

Year 8 have deepened their knowledge of the circulatory

system and the components of blood , they have

explored how the Earth’s atmosphere has changed over

time and in physics they started to use formulas that

they will need for their upcoming GCSE studies, to

calculate power and cost of electricity.

To aid revision of content covered in lessons we

recommend that students purchase the ‘New Grade 9-1

GCSE Combined Science: Edexcel Revision Guide’ from

CGP which can be found online for £9.50 which covers

all of the content in the exams in year 11. There are also

revision guides

for the individual

sciences for

students that

take the Triple

Science course.

Variety Show Trust Performance

On Thursday 18th May, we held our first Variety Show

Trust performance at Greenacre Academy. Students

from across all schools within the Academy Trust joined

us to perform alongside each other. With over 100

students performing, the hall was completely packed

with family, friends and staff who were really excited to

see the vast array of talent on display.

The evening was a great success with many highlights

and it was lovely to see the primary students take to the

stage with such confidence and not at all phased by the

400 strong crowd, or the big teenage boys!

There was a stunning choir from Chantry Academy along

with the year 5 Dance Fusion dancers. Warren Wood

performed their Dance Fusion dance and Greenacre

students had a variety of Musical Theatre excerpts, Vocal

and ukulele groups, solo/duet singers, and Impulse

dancers.

This was a truly superb

evening with a lovely

atmosphere, and will

hopefully become an

annual event. Thank you

to all the students who

have committed hours of

hard work to ensure that

their performances were

the best that they could

have been.

Chaucer The end of the year is fast approaching!

I am very proud to be Head of House to such a brilliant

group of individuals. Chaucer House continue to work

together building such a dedicated approach to a strong

SKILLS FOR LIFE ethos.

As we get closer and closer to the Summer holidays it is

clear that the pressure is on for us all! The year 11’s are

now well under way with their GCSEs and are showing

fantastic commitment to their exams that are still to be

taken. Alongside them are some of our year 10’s who are

working hard in the lead up to their English GCSE exam.

It goes without saying that this May half-term is very

well deserved and can’t come quickly enough.

On a daily basis, it has been so rewarding to see our

house point total rise – this is only down to your hard

work, excellent effort in lessons and fantastic behaviour.

Not forgetting those of you who are putting in 100%

effort with your homework and attendance. However,

Marlowe house are very close behind us and if we want

to win that fun filled Summer reward day we need a final

big push!

A big thank you goes to the parents and carers of our

students who work tirelessly with me and Mrs Wall,

supporting their children day in, day out! Working

together is something that builds such a strong team and

together we hope that school continues to be an aspect

of life that is enjoyed.

Thank you Chaucer students, Mrs Wall and our brilliant

Chaucer form tutors for such a strong end to the term - I

wish you all a happy and well deserved May half-term.

Miss Lockwood

Churchill I was pleased to see so many of Churchill boys building upon

successes from earlier this year and it was brilliant to see so

many more of you invited to either of the 0 point parties too – I

hope you all enjoyed your well-earned BBQ!

I am also proud to see how well many of you are performing on

a weekly basis, both academically and in demonstrating skills

for life. An increasing number of you are gracing the Housepoint

top 10 (or being just outside of it); enjoy your passes and

vouchers! Thank you to those of you who work hard

consistently and always do the basics - you are the cornerstone

of Churchill house and I hope that more will try to emulate your

high-standards!

After such a great start to the Housepoint competition, we have

been on the slide in recent weeks - once again a few of you are

getting detentions for silly reasons and this must stop! If you are

one of those who earns a few detentions, it is your job to find

out when and where and get it done at the first opportunity. It

is not the member of staff’s responsibility to chase you! We are

a team and in this together! (Even better, try not to get a

detention in the first place.)

Please remember to do the basics, be organised and plan

ahead. Sort out your uniform, equipment and PE (if you need it)

the night before, as this will set you up for a positive day and

take the stress and out of your morning routine! What are the

basics? Wear full school uniform to line-up (including your

shoes and tie) and have your planner and basic equipment

ready for the day ahead. Be proud that you are a student of

Greenacre Academy; and particularly proud that you are part of

the greatest house - Churchill house!

Well done to those of you in the Churchill Championship top 30;

you are doing a great job!

Have a great half-term!!

Dickens I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Dickens

students on another excellent term! It has been a

pleasure to work with you all and to see you display all

of our Skills for Life principles on a daily basis. Your

behaviour continues to be exemplary and the hard work

and effort you demonstrate within lessons will ensure

our rise up the House point table!

I am sure that you are all extremely aware that the exam

season is fully underway! This half-term is a great

opportunity for all involved to have a well-deserved rest

and to recharge the batteries for the tough task ahead.

Good luck to all Year 11’s who are sitting their GCSE’s

and the same goes for the Year 10’s who are working

hard in the lead up to their English GCSE exam. I’m sure

you will all smash it!

There is a lot to look forward to in Term 6! Years 7-9 will

be competing in the annual Greenacre Sports Day where

Dickens has won the event 3 years in a row! Year 10 will

be heading off on work experience which is a great

opportunity to develop their Skills for Life and gain

valuable understanding of a working environment.

I’m sure you will all join me in thanking Ms Boynton and

all Dickens Form Tutors for their hard work and

commitment during Term 5. Have a great half term!

Mr Franklin

Marlowe Well done Marlowe House on yet another successful

term!

This term has seen Marlowe forms attempt to improve

their overall attendance, well done to all who have made

a concerted effort to improve attendance and

punctuality. In addition to this, forms have also been

focusing on raising their house point totals – form CP

have excelled at this and Hashim Farid and Louie

Devonport have consistently been in the top ten house

point earners – well done!

Currently, Marlowe sit in second place in the House

Point League Table – we are a mere 300 points behind

Chaucer House – please make sure you are showcasing

to your teachers a high standard of work and a great

work ethic so that we can obtain as many house points

as possible!

Good luck to all Marlowe year 10 students who have

applied to be Prefects and have interviews with the

Leadership Team – I have no doubt that each one of you

who have applied will make excellent Prefects!

Well down to all Marlowe students who took part in the

recent Variety Show – it was a pleasure to see so many

of you take the forefront of the stage – what a talented

bunch you are!

Please make sure you return to school with all of your

basic equipment and wearing correct uniform – let’s

start the new term as we mean to go on!

Finally, I’d like to wish all Marlowe students, Mrs Ward,

Mrs Hill and our hardworking Form Tutors a restful half

term, and I thank you for all your hard work this term.

Ms. Wall
