Introduction

As a visit to the problem site has been made on March 10, 2014 and the presentation for the problem requirements also had been done on March 31, 2014, now it is the time to come out with a couple solutions for the problems that we have concerned. Here, stated again about the problems site requirement as what had beendiscussed in previous report with one additional requirement:

i. Site selectionii. Water issuesiii. Energy issuesiv. Sanitary and drainagev. Day lightingvi. Neighborhood issuesvii. Dampness/mold issues

viii. Landscapingix. Management of wastex. Safety

Now from our four objectives, one has been solved which is to investigate the problem and site. Here, we will discuss details about next three (3) objectives which are:

i. To introduce the green system to the site.ii. To get more knowledge about green technologies suit to

be applied at the problem site.iii. To overcome the problems on the site according to green

technology.

Our grandchildren will look back at this time in history, this push toward a sustainable world, as the moment of the greatest opportunity, excitement, and challenge in human history. We have heard about green building, maybe even read books and magazines about various homes with a green focus. Now is the timeto plan our green home and discover the art of building in a responsible manner.

As we learn more about green building, we may start to have feeling of guilt. After all, the act of building is disruptive.

Building a home, even a green home, uses materials, resources, and energy, and it produces waste. This is inevitable. And there is no perfect green material- all materials will have some impacton our planet. But don’t beat ourselves up about what we can’t control; instead, focus our energy on what we can control.

For thousands of years, human being built their homes out ofnatural materials, using the sun to heat and cool, and harvestingthe rain water for other uses. We can learn from our past to understand how to build our future. In fact, in future, we believe that all buildings will be green buildings.

Whether our green dream home is a simple remodel, or a multi-million-dollar mansion, it can give huge influences even tothe society or to the surrounding. So, here we will guide and discuss step by step toward selecting the finishes, systems, and structure and also solution to make our dream a reality.

For every problems states here, the evidences are attached in the appendix. The features of our model building are also attached together in different section. For a clear view of this report please refer to the appendix section.

Bringing The Solution

Site Selection

Our problem site is Flat Taman Muhibah which is located at Seri Kembangan, Selangor. The reasons why we chose this site is because this flat has fulfill all the requirements needed to be an ideal problem site. So, the requirements are as what have beendiscussed earlier. However, the main reason why we choose Flat Taman Muhibah as our problems site is because the flat is not a green building. Non-green building which give out some pressure off the environment as what have been discussed above. The secondreason is because of the location of this flat is in the city. Weknow that city is a place which well known as busy place with cars, trains, motorcycles and also peoples. There are a lot of pollution occur in the city. The third reason is the flat is

Page 3: Green Technology- Purposed Renovation of Existing Building to Green Building

located in a demanded areas which has a lot of infrastructure that may lead to greenhouse effect.

Water Issues

By referring our previous report, in our study place, we found that water problems can obviously be seen especially from the water leakage and pipe blockage. The pipe systems look very okay inside the building, however these problems were spotted on the roof and around the rear side of the building. The water leakage is very serious since the flow of water is very fast. As our second visit to the problem site, we have tried to measure the flow rate of the water leakage and the result is as follow:

We have taken the wasted water per liter bottle. Averagely, it only took 282 seconds which is equal to 4.7 minutes to fill in1 Liter of empty mineral water. Let us assume a tank used in our kitchen with the small capacity of 50 Liter here, we only need 235 minutes to fill our house water tank which is equal to 3.91 hours. From this wasted water with this such flow rate, we are able to store almost 310 Liter of water per day.

We are also have specific calculation from this water wastage which is:

Flow rate of water loss per day for pipes leakage:

We have: density of water = 1000.00 kg/m³

We assume: mass of water per minute through pipes leakage = 0.213 kg / min

Using formula: density = mass/volume

Volume = mass/ density

Volume of water per minute = 0.213 kg/1000 kg/m³

=0.000213 m³/min

=( 0.000213*1000) L/min

Page 4: Green Technology- Purposed Renovation of Existing Building to Green Building

EMM 3204 GREEN TECHNOLOGY GROUP NAME: THERMOS

Thus, flow rate of water per hour: (0.213 /0.0167) L/h

=12.75 L/h

Thus, flow rate of water per day: (12.75/0.04167) L/day

=306.08 L/day

Although water is one of the most abundant resources on earth which covering 70 percent of the planet, but not all of 70 percent are good water source which is good for our consumption. We need clean and fresh water source for our daily life for example for our daily activities like washing clothes, cooking and bathing.

As a solution for this situation, we have come out with someidea which is by using inside piping system instead of outer piping system since inside piping system can prevent pipe damage from man's careless. Inside piping system means the pipe containsdouble layer, outer and inner layers. The outer layer used to absorb some shock or maybe pressure which may causes the internalpipe to break. From this way, internal pipe can work effectively and flow the water, distributes to the each houses smother. We can use plastic or polyduct to coat internal pipe which is low incost and high performance.

Instead using poly-ducting pipe, we are also can use Polypropylene pipe (PP) for piping system because of its durability, health safety and green pipe which it’s not joined together with chemicals. Beside, heat is used to melt the mating ends and fuse them permanently together.

In order to prevent the pipe blockage, water filtration should be introduced. Before clean water reaches to the residencearea, it first being filtered in water treatment plant but, it must be filtered again before it reaches to the consumer. The reason is because the problem inside the distributor pipes to theresidence area. Improper pipe treatment will encourage the

Page 5: Green Technology- Purposed Renovation of Existing Building to Green Building

EMM 3204 GREEN TECHNOLOGY GROUP NAME: THERMOS

breeding of algae. When this algae grows up, it will block the water channel. Whenever the water channel being blocked, the pressure inside the pipe increases and may cause the pipe to burst or explode. When this happens it will harm people who walksnear to the pipe.

Water filtration seems the best method to be used to preventpipe blockage. Water filtration also uses a few filter systems tofilter water especially from impurities and small litters. Instead only filtering water, the water filter also can be added with mineral system so that our supplied water is full of mineralwhich will fulfill our body mineral needs. Thus, water filtrationis good, less expensive and effective way to fight pipe blockage issues.

Energy Issues

Given the issues around fossil fuels, carbon emission, and air pollution, more and more states are requiring their public utilities to generate a percentage of their power from renewable source. Renewable energy, unlike fossil fuels, is any type of energy derived from resources that are regenerative and cannot bedepleted. Because fossils fuel are remnants from ancient plant deposits from millions of years ago, we can’t make any more. Renewable, however come from clean sources such as sun, wind, andplants. The sun and the wind aren’t going anywhere, and we can grow as many plants as we want. The result: less pollution and reduced global warming.

Since energy solving for residential area is quite high, so we’ll just introduce Photovoltaic system which is also known as solar power. Using solar power, we can convert our abundant sunlight into electricity. The sun currently provides 5000 times the amount of energy people need. More sunlight energy hits the earth each hour than the world’s population consumes in an entireyear. It’s clean, it’s free, and it’ll never run out.

Solar panels have no moving parts and emit no waste. When sunlight strikes the thin panel of silicon, the electrons get excited and start moving, which produces and electrical current.

Page 6: Green Technology- Purposed Renovation of Existing Building to Green Building

EMM 3204 GREEN TECHNOLOGY GROUP NAME: THERMOS

Because they require sunlight to operate, the panels only work in the day-time. Instead of storing energy in batteries, thepanels now use a grid-tie system. During the day, the panels produce energy, and excess electricity is pumped back into the electrical grid. At night, when the panels are dormant, our home simply pulls energy off the power lines as usual.

Solar panel need and obstructed and south-facing area of ourroof. If our roof is pitched, the panels are at the mercy of the angle of our roof and may not be as effective as they could be. On a flat roof, the panels can be turned and angled toward the south-facing sun.

Find a spot that is not shaded. And because the panels we install on our home could be there for 25 years or more, keep in mind any trees around it that could shadow the panels in the future.

Technically, the panels do not need to be located solely on the roof. Any sunny location within 1000 feet of our home works as well. However, its roof is only suitable and empty space and enough to put solar panel.

Again, remodeling costs for residential area aren’t cheap. Thus, our idea about solar power is only to be an energy backup during current shortage or blackout. The aim of this solution is for safety. When black out happen, stored electrical energy that generated from solar power can be extracted to light up emergencylamps which used to illuminate the pathway, and staircases.

This flat consist of ten houses and five floors. For every floors consist of 5 lamps for only half of the flat building. That means, a building has at least 60 lamps used to illuminate the path ways. Here, we consider the electricity generated can beused to cover the electricity for about 2 hours during black out time. So here is the simple calculation of solar power needed andthe cost required:

A building needs at least 60 Lamps, Solar panel 20W= RM 240 x 6units

Page 7: Green Technology- Purposed Renovation of Existing Building to Green Building

EMM 3204 GREEN TECHNOLOGY GROUP NAME: THERMOS

A lamp require 36 Watt/ hour to operate = RM 1440

For 2 hours, 4320 Watt is required Solar Inverter 2000W= RM 299 x 3units

= RM 897

Peak sunny hour = 5 Hours / day (From 10amtill 3pm)

120W x 5hours x 7days = 4200 W/ week

Capacity of solar inverter = 6000W

The owner of the building only needs to spend of his RM 2337or to bear with non-stop of complains from the settlers. At leasthe or she can stop himself from fallen on the ladder during current shortage time. Well this is only plan that useful for only two hours. But it depends on the owner either he or she wantto increase the duration of the emergency lamps or not by adding some important part of this photovoltaic systems.

We assume that the efficiency of this solar panel is 95 percent with the inclination of 15 degree. So, it can receive almost complete peak sun time during day time for 5 hours in order to store energy.

Sanitary and Drainage

Sanitary is important in order to keep our environment beautiful and clean. Drainage also quite important so that duringraining day, it can do its job to flow the water away into the stream and to avoid any flood. Well managed sanitary and drainagealso can bring happiness to the residential area. It starts firstwith us.

As the problems we concerned about this place as what has been written in previous report are about drain blockage and rubbish all over the place. So, we are pleased to introduce some solutions regarding this matters. Hopefully, it can practically solve this problem in this residential area.

RM 1440

+RM 897

Total= RM2337

Page 8: Green Technology- Purposed Renovation of Existing Building to Green Building

EMM 3204 GREEN TECHNOLOGY GROUP NAME: THERMOS

The drain is in a good condition, but the problem is it blocked with rubbishes and leaves. Since the drain does not has any covers so rubbishes easily can fall into the drain and block the drainage. As a solution here, we need the drain covers at least. The covers should be strong enough in case if people stepson it, and it will not break easily. However, we cannot using thecovers made up from steel since there are metal thieves around this flat area, so use of strong plastic or fiberglass covers along with pin in order to tighten them up will be a good thing.

About the sanitary, we must introduce recycle bin machine with reward. Every time people around there wants to throw their trashes for examples pesticides, drinking can, and bottle they will thinking to get rewarded from these items by placing them inthe rewarding machine for every recyclable items.

Day Lighting

In our previous report, the problem for this issue is, the light cannot enter houses which are located at the ground floor. Indeed, during day time, even though the sun rises above on our head, the ground floor houses only receive small quantity of amount of light. This can be review from our simple test by reading a book inside a house of settler. We had faced some difficulties to read the words inside the book because of poor illuminations.

Well, people love natural light. Subconsciously, we seek outsunlit places and enjoy spending time in natural light. Beyond fulfilling this desire, however, there are some tangible benefitsto adding natural daylighting into our home.

Studies has proven that daylighting speeds up recovery fromillness. Also, kids will have better concentration while studyingunder natural daylight, and it reduces eyestrain. Thus, here we are providing some options and suggestion to improve our problem site about their day lighting. There are four of them which are:

Skylights

Page 9: Green Technology- Purposed Renovation of Existing Building to Green Building

EMM 3204 GREEN TECHNOLOGY GROUP NAME: THERMOS

Skylight are rooftop windows. They bring in twice the light of a traditional window of the same size. Skylight eliminate the need for electric lighting during the day. To reduce the heat gain from too much sun, install skylights on the north side of the roof. Double-glazed skylight have two layers of glass to help insulate the skylight. Choose operable skylights to capture passing breezes. However for the ground floor houses, they can’t use this system because they have no roof at all, so they can apply this system to their rear house side. But it will only giveless than half the value of actual skylight. Although the value of illumination is less than before, they can acquire maximum value of breezes during night time. This will keep their house cold with natural fan.

Sun Tunnel

A sun tunnel (like the one shown in Figure #) uses a small dome skylight on the roof and another on the ceiling of a room. A flexible tube, similar to a clothes-dryer vent, connects both domes. Also called a “sun tube”, “sun pipe”, or “solar tube”, light bounces around the inside of tis tube, creating a bright skylight inside. Sun tunnels are inexpensive and easy to install, and they are perfect for existing homes or houses with tall atticspaces.

Mirror

Because a mirror reflects light, well-placed mirrors can be used to reflect the light, doubling the amount of ambient light in a room. We can use bulbs of half the normal wattage, or half the number of fixtures, with no loss in light level. The potential energy saving is enormous.

The typical mirror is a sheet of flat plate glass coated with aluminum or silver on one side. The opposite side is a highly reflective surface. Because the coating is on the backside, it’s protected from scratching and will typically last a very long time.

Page 10: Green Technology- Purposed Renovation of Existing Building to Green Building

EMM 3204 GREEN TECHNOLOGY GROUP NAME: THERMOS

Nowadays, the modern mirror uses less than 3 percent lead contentin the paint coating. In fact, lead-free mirrors are now commonlyavailable. Because glass itself it a natural material, mirrors are inherently green material.

Mirrored glass cannot be recycled, but if protected, it can last many years with minimal maintenance. It does not release chemicals, and glass is one of the most commonly recycled material in the world.

Light Shelves

This option has its own principle. By using natural light, we canreduce the need for electricity. In practice, however, bringing daylight deep into a home can be challenging. Enter light shelves. Light shelves are horizontal fins located above eye level at the windows to bunch the light back up onto the ceiling. This diffuses the light and brings it deeper into the building. Well-placed light shelves also act as a shading device and reduceglare.

In order to work effectively, both the light shelf and the ceiling need to be white or at least a light hue. We may be thinking if mirrors reflect light so well, why not top the light shelf with a mirror surface? Unfortunately, reflecting direct sunlight into a building can create enough heat ti burn the ceiling. For example, we go back during our kid time. Remember asa kid when we would use a magnifying glass to burn leaves or maybe paper or other else? A mirror also can potentially create the same heat. That is why we need to be more careful when using horizontal mirrors that would reflect large amounts of direct sunlight.

Assumptions made for Daylighting

• It has 3 part at the building that can improve daylighting– Rooftop– Balcony– Window

Page 11: Green Technology- Purposed Renovation of Existing Building to Green Building

EMM 3204 GREEN TECHNOLOGY GROUP NAME: THERMOS

• The roof is change from old type “A type” with solar panel and hydroponic plant. It can make daylighting go through in the middle of the building.

• A 45 degree roof at the edge of the building is to prevent from the sunlight at the evening and to make rain water go to water drainage easier.

• A steel fence at the balcony is change with glass. This willimprove the daylighting for the lower floor to get sunlight. It will prevent from heat absorb to the building otherwise use steel.

• The number of window is increase at the building. So the house gets more daylighting and better ventilation.

Selected Values and Calculations Daylighting

• Typical recommended minimum daylight factors for rooms with side lighting only

– Living room (minimum area 8 m² is 1%– Bedroom (minimum area 6 m² is 0.5%– Kitchen (minimum area 5 m² is 2%

• The selected values are

Rooms Size (m²) Percentage (%)

Living Room 14 1.8

Bedrooms 15 1.2

Kitchen 12 4.2

• Calculation of the natural illuminance at the reference point inside a building by applying the following formula

– D = (Ei / Eo) x 100)• Where D = Daylight Factor• Ei = Illuminance at reference point in building• Eo = Illuminance at the reference point if the

room was unobstructed• Ei = (D x Eo) / 100• Ei = ( 4.2 x 5000) / 100 = 210 lux

Target Output to be Achieve

• The value shows 210 lux. It is equally to half of the house.• The building can make 60% energy saving.• The resident just use lights at night.

Dampness and Mould Issues

In our study area, as has been mentioned before there are water leakages at the top of the building and around the rear side which cause very bad dampness issues. The moisture will be mostly created from things such as bathing, cooking, cleaning, washing, drying, etc. When we were passing through these areas, bad smell can be inhaled. Besides, along these places also, blackmould can be spotted on walls. This this is called mildew. We have performed some test in order to know either this black spot is mildew by apply some bleach onto the affected area with cloth by help from a residence. Indeed, the dark colour fades after a few minutes and this tells that, this black spot is mildew, if not, the patch is probably just dirt.

Mould is a kind of fungus that develops from airborne spores. It usually grows in damp, warm conditions without much airflow, humid condition, and lack ventilation which is householdbathrooms and loft spaces often suffer from mould, but sometimes mould on walls can be due to plumbing leaks. Badly insulated heating pipes can also cause a build-up of moisture behind the walls. Furthermore, mould can cause allergic reactions and poor health, so if we gave an extensive problem with mould on walls, it may be best to seek expert help.

Page 13: Green Technology- Purposed Renovation of Existing Building to Green Building

EMM 3204 GREEN TECHNOLOGY GROUP NAME: THERMOS

Now it is time for the solution for these matters. An inexpensive and natural alternative to commercial mould and mildew removers is vinegar which can be diluted with water. This solution will remove mould and mildew with ease. For area particular badly affected with mould, vinegar can even be used undiluted. Buy empty spray bottle to fill with the vinegar solution and spray it on as we would a commercial cleaner. Proceed in exactly the same way as described before. As a reminder here, never mix vinegar and bleach together, because as doing so, it will produces a potentially fatal gas.

Mould and mildew will not simply give up to keep spreading and breading. Once we have dealt with a mildew infestation on ourwalls, the next step is to stop it recurring. If we have used a special product, such as anti-microbial spray to clean mould off the walls, this can help prevent the spores from settling again. We could also cover the area with anti-mildew paint, which can bepurchased from hardware shops or any hypermarkets.

For more long-term mould prevention, consider installing an electric humidifier in badly affected areas. We could also look into upgrading our home insulation if this is found to be a problem. It loves so much to get rid of mould is to cut out the damp conditions. It is pleased for us to suggest more a few suggestions on how to cut out the damp conditions.

First, keep bathrooms, kitchen, and other humid spaces well-ventilated and as dry as possible. Second, spread out shower curtains and towels to dry. Third, tackle leaks as soon as they are discovered to prevent moisture seeping into cavities and under floors. Last but not least, never leave wet materials retained in the same place for a long period. In case mould and mildew on walls does return, don’t be panic because it is a common issue and we are now well-armed with advice on how to dealwith it as has been mentioned before.

Landscaping

Page 14: Green Technology- Purposed Renovation of Existing Building to Green Building

EMM 3204 GREEN TECHNOLOGY GROUP NAME: THERMOS

As we went to the top of the building, we clearly can see the scenery and atmosphere around the building. The KTM and REL stations on the right side and, PLUS highway on the left side. Noise, dust and smoke are main pollution to this area. They are also contribute to unhappy life which will disturb you from your calm rest, disturb you from night doze and child study time. Thissituations also not good for baby because baby has low immunity system thus it can gives baby a certain disease for example, runny nose. Besides, lack of cloth lines also such a bad view given as residences love to dry their clothes anywhere they like by making their own clothe lines. This matter gives adverse viewsof scenery around the flat along with it faded building paint.

We concern about this area residence, and we concern about baby sleeping time so we have come out with a few solution regarding matters. First, plant more trees. Trees are green living things, produces beneficial gases for us to inhale. Trees give multiple of reasons and benefices to their surroundings. Planting a row pf large shrubs or trees can help to reduce noise and also air pollution. As noise travels in wave form which five to ten decibles randomly around the atmosphere and will collide with trees, thus these trees will be acting as an obstacle to tackle and reduces noise. Main sources of noise around this residence are from vehicles and trains. Furthermore, the added benefits of the wind sound helps to drown out obnoxious sound. Let say during day time, birds also will have chances to take a break on the top of the trees and starts tweeting in order to relief their fatigue. Baby must be so calm to listen to this typeof songs and same goes to other people.

When we have plant trees, the side outcome from this is insects and pets. A little amount of insects are so good for our environment but if they are exceed, it will becoming so irritating. Thus steps to control this matter are introduced. Basically people will use synthetic pesticides to counter this problem. Although pesticides are effective at killing weeds and insects, they are also killing people.

Page 15: Green Technology- Purposed Renovation of Existing Building to Green Building

EMM 3204 GREEN TECHNOLOGY GROUP NAME: THERMOS

We try to avoid the usage of harmful chemicals. Natural alternatives such as garlic, hot papper, and use dishwater are all healthy and effective methods to deal with insects. Simply spray a watery mixture of one of these over the trees or plants. Integrated pest management (IPM) is an effective environmentally friendly way to dealt with insects, rodents, and other pests without using chemical pesticides. To rid of pests, IPM uses natural predators (insects eating other insects) of the pest to balance the food chain of the insects.

It will becoming easy for the residence to pick their clothes up if in raining day if only their clothes is near to their houses. So our solution is to apply portable hanger inside the house at free area (Refer to the appendix). Basically this free area is used as a store, so why not we make it as our place to dry our clothes. However, the humid is maybe increase due to wet clothes. Thus, we also suggest that a small packet of silicate gel could be placed around in the safer place in order to absorb and prevent high surrounding moisture.

Some 40,000 years ago, people covered their walls with earlycave paintings drawn with natural pigments of red ochre and charcoal. Although we still decorate our walls, paint has evolvedinto the ubiquitous finish for all our interiors. Paint poses some potential health concerns because it consists of pigment held together with a binding agent. These building agents containVOCs (volatile organic compounds), which are released into the air.

Originally, the pigments in paint contained high amount of lead, a toxic and persistent chemical linked to damage to the nervous system of children. Kids touch every-thing around the house. Even tiny amounts of lead paint dust can be picked up by small fingers, and then ingested when they put their fingers to their mouth. Thus, paints used to apply on building should have low amount of lead or not at all. Besides, we are preferred whitepaint because it can reflect a huge amount of the sun heat.

Management of Waste

Page 16: Green Technology- Purposed Renovation of Existing Building to Green Building

EMM 3204 GREEN TECHNOLOGY GROUP NAME: THERMOS

In a residential it is crucial if there’s no any good systemof waste management. It is because waste management will determine and reflect about the behavior, moral, and discipline of the residence itself. Good waste management must come from thepeople at this flat first because the source of waste is from them. Whenever they manage the waste from household very well, then it will be easier for the residential waste pick up service to come and pick up the trashes and other wastes.

As in our report before, we have mentioned about how the people in this place dealt with their waste. There are wastage hole for every floor and the wastage is been thrown through this hole. When it hits the ground, it will be scattered around.

We are concern very much about our problem place that have been selected. So, we have come out with a few idea on how to deal with this problem. First of all, we’ve introduced wastage-sliding. The aim of this sliding is to navigate the thrown wastage to suitable collecting tank. This sliding is connected tothe wastage hole. Whenever wastage is thrown through this hole, it will sliding and moves to the suitable place. Before being thrown, people must read the label first either the wastage contains plastic, can, bottle, paper or kitchen waste. So that, wastage bag will arrive at the fixed place for proper waste management.

Second, The Municipalities also must pay attention to pick up this waste frequently so that the tank is not overload with wastage. When it is overload, it will billow out and will encourage the breeding of pests for example rats and cockroaches.Last but not least, recycle bin also can be introduced for the occupant on the first floor since the sliding is not too effective to slides down their wastage down to the wastage tank. However, this recycle bins must be labeled systematically so thatpeople will not get confused to place their wastage to the suitable place especially between recyclable items and household trash.

Harvesting Rainwater

Page 17: Green Technology- Purposed Renovation of Existing Building to Green Building

EMM 3204 GREEN TECHNOLOGY GROUP NAME: THERMOS

Nature provides a source of clean water that does not acquire any energy or effort. We can collect rainwater and put itto use. A typical home or residential allows the rainwater to flow into gutters and drains, where it’s sent to the storm sewer.

According to Malaysia Metrology Department, averagely this state receive 464.00 mm of rainfall per year as what has been recorded. Collecting this abundance of rainwater is known as rainwater harvesting. As rain falls on the roof, it’s channeled into tanks (Refer the Appendix B). From there, it can be used throughout the home.

Harvesting the rain from a roof where the rain will collect in gutters that channel the water into downspouts and then into some sort of storage vessel or water tank. Then the water will befiltered by some sort of filter at the water tank. After that, the filtered water will flow to underground tank where the water can be stored more. There is a pump in the underground tank whichused to pump clean water back to the structure for daily uses.

However, residential rainwater systems aren’t cheap. The current low cost of water means we will be waiting a long time for the saving to pay for the installation cost for a home. But as the demand for water increases, prices will increase. Installing a rainwater system now will make sense in the long run.

There are a lot of benefits of rainwater collection. Those are easy to maintain, free source of water, can be used as a mainsource of water or as a backup source to wells and municipal water, it can solve the drainage problems on your property while providing you with free water, and the system can be easily retrofitted to an existing structure or built during new buildingconstruction. But, the main point is, it promotes self-sufficiency and helps to conserve water.

Green roof

Page 18: Green Technology- Purposed Renovation of Existing Building to Green Building

A green roof is not a roof with green-colored shingles. It is a supplemental roofing system made up of plant material that is applied over a conventional roof. Think of the green roof as an extension of the existing roof.

A green roof is not a roof with green-colored shingles. It is a supplemental roofing system made up of plant material that is applied over a conventional roof. So, we think of the green roof as an extension of the existing roof.

A green roof is really just an assembly of materials. From top to bottom, the basic parts are as follow:

Plants: It would not be a green roof without plants. The key to understanding a green roof is to think of it as a natural habit. Selecting appropriate plants to our climate by choosing native, noninvasive, drought tolerant plants. Fire is a serious concern with green roofs, so we want to select plants that can withstand the hot, dry environment on a rooftop.

Wind erosion blanket: To prevent the wind from blowing the dirt away a thin wind erosion blanket is placed on the top of the dirt. The blanket is typically made of a material that dessolves after the plants take root.

Planting media: to support the plants, our green roof needs tohave some sort of soil. A green roof typically includes anywhere from 2 to 6 inches of soil for a basic roof, up to several feet of soil for tall plants, shrubs, and trees. The soil type and mixture will array based on the types of plants we selected.

Filter fabric: a biodegradable fabric such as jute is used to filter the water running down the roof.

Drainage/retention layer: in order to prevent the water from sitting on the roof membrane, a drainage layer is used to allow the free flow of water to a drain. This is usually some type of egg-crate or filter fabric.

Insulation: Although insulation is not really a required part of a green roof, it makes sense to add insulation to improve the energy efficiency of the building. Rigid insulation boards are typically used. In combination with the soil, a green roof provides an incredibly high amount of insulation.

Root barrier: Because plant roots can penetrate this roof membrane, a green roof should have a separate roof barrier for protection. Typically made of some sort of plastic or foil, the root barrier must be correctly installed to avoid leaks.

Roof membrane: The most important component of any roof system is the waterproof membrane that keeps water out of the building. Several different types of roof membranes can be used with green roofs, including a typical liquid-applied asphalt roofor sheet membrane types of roofing. Select a membrane with a 20-year life and warranty.

Prepare roof surface: The green roof should be installed on a clean, dry, and even roof surface.

Rock deck: Almost any type of roof deck, steel, concrete, wood, can be used for a green roof, as long as it can support theweight. Low-slope roofs are most appropriate for green roofs, through there needs to be some slope to allow water to drain.

A green roof also has its own pros and cons. It offers numerous benefits as the following:

Insulation: Because of their earthen mass, a green roof adds a lot of insulation to the roof, which saves our money on our energy bills.

Environmental factors: The plants on the roof can be used to filter and clean water, while automatically absorbing pollution and giving off oxygen for us to breath.

Protection: Because a green roof sits over our roof membrane, it protects the roof from damage.

Appearance: A roof is typically the least attractive part of any building, but a green roof is a beautiful replacement.

Cool temperature: Plants keep our roof cool, reducing the ambient temperature around a building

Potential concerns and drawbacks including the following:

Uncertainty about long term performance: Green roof are still considered a new technology. It is too new to have a track record. The biggest concern with any roof is leaking. Because a green roof adds an additional layer of protection, we can at least expect a longer life from the conventional roof.

Difficulty of repairs: Although a green roof covers andprotect the conventional roof below, finding leaks and fixing repairs is much more difficult. We have to remove the vegetation, soil, and drainage in order to inspect the roof for leak. Modulargrid system make this process much easier because they can be removed in pieces.

Conclusion

Remodeling a house is easier rather than to remodeling residential area. This is because it will costing a huge amount of money. Actually, there are still a lot of ways that can be used to remodeling either residential area or a house. But it depends on how people wanted their house or building to be.

Green approach for green building is the best way to save money and resources. Although it would costly during first time, trust me, we will get the payback in one year at least. Furthermore, it also environmentally friendly. This is how we want to contribute to reduce the global climax and save polar bears.

The way people construct their building is about to change radically. It has to. The majority of modern-day buildings waste energy, water, and resources beyond comprehension. It’s not our

fault, really. Most architects and builders are completely unaware of the impact building have on people’s health and the environment.

Green building is a way of looking at building that allow people to be more captions, and responsible with energy and natural resources. Going green is usually the most logical and economical choice, whether we’re building or remodeling our home our building. In the near future, all building will be green building, whether by preference or regulation. It is inevitable.

Last but not least, because green building is a mystery to most people, various rumors, misconceptions, and misperceptions swirl around it. We’ve probably heard a range of odd and funny comments about green building isn’t it?
