Future energy challengesTomorrow’s Smart Grid challenges are

the interaction between three factors.

1. Increased production of renewable

energy on the supply grid

Withincreasedproductionfromwindand

solarplants,etc.,thedeliveryofenergytothe

gridwillfluctuatemuchmore.Whenitiswindy,

alotofwindenergywillbeproduced;whenit

iscloudy,lesssolarenergywillbeproduced,

etc.Inordertoavoidperiodsofcongestion/

failureintheenergysupply,itwillbenecessary

tocreateabalancewithlargecapitalexpen-

dituretocreatealargerandmorerobust

powergridasaresult.

ThisissimpleinDenmark,asourenergygrid

isveryrobust,butinmanyothercountries

thiswillpresentachallenge,andthereforeat-

tentionisdirectedtoDenmarktofindsystem

solutions.

2. Consumer behaviour

Privatehomes,businesses,officesandpublicinstitutionsareallconsumersofenergy.

Theirconsumptionpatternsovertheyears,months,weeks,daysandhoursarebasedon

decadesofsecureaccesstoalltheenergytheyneed.Therefore,theconsumptionpattern

isnotalignedwiththefutureproductionpatternforrenewableenergy,e.g.washingclothes

atnightorensuringthatanentireresidentialareacanchargeitselectriccarsatthe

sametime.Securityofsupplyisvital.Norarethepricestructureandenergytaxesaligned

tothis“newworld”,sotherearenoincentiveswithintheprivatesectortochangebe-

haviour.Furthermore,knowledgeofprivateconsumptionpatternsislimited,asremote

metershaveonlybecomewidespreadinrecentyears.Actualdataprocessingisnotwide-

spreadandsoitisnotpossibletosurveyconsumptioningreaterdetail,e.g.whichproducts

usewhatandwhen.

3. Prosumers – the new consumers

Therenewableenergymarketisrapidlydeveloping.Newproductsfor

energyproductionfromthewind,sun,ground,fuelcells,etc.appear

everyday,andefficiencyisimprovingfromyeartoyear.

Severaloftheproductscanbemounteddirectlyinthehomeofthe

consumer,forexamplesolarcellsonroofs.Thismeansthataprivate

personorbusinessisnotonlyaconsumer,butalsoanenergyproducer

–a“prosumer”.Thispresentsanumberofchallengestoenergysecu-

rityandbalance,astheenergywillnowbeflowinginbothdirections

withinthegrid.

Finally,roll-outofelectriccarsisalsoexpectedtocreatehugechallen-

gestoenergysecurityandefficiency,astheprocessofchargingsuch

carsputsasignificantburdenonthegrid.Workisbeingcarriedout

worldwidetocreatesolutionstomeetthesechallenges,includinglocal

energystorageoptionstocontributetotheenergybalance,aswellas

solutionsinwhichelectricity,heating,cooling,hydrogenandgasare

combinedintotalintelligentenergystoragesystems.

It’sallaboutcreatingabalancebetweenproduction,consump-tionandstorage,sothatrene-

wableenergycanbeexploitedinthebestpossibleway.

Green Tech House

Athree-storeybuildingvisiblefromtheE45motorway.Theofficebuildingcontains

anumberofofficepremises,from20-personcompaniestoone-manbusinesses.

Itisalsopossibletorentindividualdesksinanopen,modernofficeenvironment.

GreenTechHousecanhouse200workplaces,andcurrently60%ofthebuilding

isreservedbycompaniesandpublicinstitutionsworkingwithinthefieldofenergy.

Inaddition,thereareanumberofsharedfunctionsavailable,e.g.reception,canteen,

meetingandprojectrooms.

Green Tech Lab

Here,entrepreneurs,companiesandeducationalinstitutionsareofferedfacilities

suchasworkshops,laboratoriesandtrainingfacilities.Anotherimportantareain

GreenTechLabisthetechroom.Thiscollectsallthetechnologyanddatafromthe

EnergyPark.ThetechroomisalsoconnectedtodatatoandfromGreenTechHouse,

aswellastheVeljeNorthindustrialarea.GreenTechLabisthecentralhubwithin

development,researchandteachingforallpartnersassociatedwithGreenTechCenter.

Thisparkisaplaygroundfortesting,demonstrationandcommer-

cialisationofenergy-producingandenergy-savingsolutions.An

energyparkwithplatformscustomisedforthevariousdemandsof

energyproducers(wind,sun,ground,fuelcells,etc.)

Here,aproduct,e.g.awindturbine,aninverteroranoptimisation

unitinasinglesystemlinkedtothenationalgrid,canbeinstal-

ledquicklyandcheaply.Theprojectfunctioncanbedemonstrated

quicklyinacomprehensivesolutionwherecustomers,investorsand

otherscanseetheeffectofoneormoreproductsinasinglesystem.

Aninfrastructureforelectricity,heat,gas,hydrogenandcommuni-

cationmakesiteasytotestanddemonstratesolutionsthathavean

effectbyworkingacrosstraditionalformsofenergy(e.g.storageof

excesselectricityinhydrogenorheat).

Acontrolroomgathersandprocessesallthisdatasouserscan

getrapidresultsfromtheirproductsinthebiggerpictureeasilyand

cheaply.Partnersonlypayforuseofthefacilities,astheinfrastruc-

tureanddatacapture/measurement/processinginthesystemhas

alreadybeenpaidfor.

testsandcertifications.

Smart Grid Focus

Buildingan“intelligent”electricitysystem–asmartgrid–islikedoingapuzzle,wheresome

ofthepiecesareeithermissingordonotfit.ItisintendedthatSmartGridwillprovidean-

swerstotomorrow’ssolutionsinvolvingrenewableenergyfromsourcessuchaswindpo-

werandsolarcells,asareplacementforfossilfuelssuchascoal,oilandnaturalgas.

Europeantransmissionanddistributioncompanieshaveproducedavisionarystrategyto

enabletheEuropeanelectricitysystemtoaccommodatethelargeamountsofrenewable

energyagreedbyEUMemberStatesintheClimateandEnergyPackagefrom2007.By

2018,approx.EUR2billion(nearlyDKK15billion)willhavebeeninvested.

Thiswillcreatehugedemandforintelligentsolutionsandproducts,andDanishcompanies

areinafavourablepositionwithregardtothismarket.TheresearchteamattheUniver-

sityofSouthernDenmarkisanaturalpartnerforclosecooperationwithbusinessesand

otherfor-profitinstitutionsatGreenTechCenterforanalysingtheopportunitiesthatmay

provideanswerstothechallengesahead.

The switch to a fossil-free society

is probably the biggest challenge

facing Danish society in recent times

and will require the development

Anintelligentsystemthatlinksuptheelectricity

GridwillalsoincreasethedigitalisationofDanish

households.Therewillbemoremetering,control

andcommunicationelectronicsinhomes,whichwill

provideconsumerswithanoverviewoftheir

consumptionandtheabilitytoachieveautomated

andintelligentelectricityconsumption.

Green Tech Center’s vision

GridtestfacilitytodemonstrateSmartGridfunc-

tionality.Withthedemonstrationfacilitiesinvolvedin

GreenTechPark,aplatformhasbeencreatedwhere

research,education,testingandconsumeranalyses

necessaryforthedevelopmentoffutureSmart

• Controlandconnectivityoptionsforelectricity,heatandcoldstorageinandoutsidetheofficebuildingandtheelectriccarstands.

• Therooflevelhasbeenpreparedforinstallationofvariousenergyandenvironmentalsolutionsfortestinganddemonstrationandcanbevisitedviaelevatorandstairs(thefifthfacadeofthebuilding).

ThebuildinghasbeenintegratedintothesurroundingfacilitiesfromGreen

TechPark,sotestsanddemonstrationscanbecombinedacrossthecentre.

Workshop om informationsmodel til formidling af data

mellem aktørerne i et fremtidigt dansk smart grid

Energinet.dk og Dansk Energi har nedsat en arbejdsgruppe, som skal udarbejde en konsolideret anbefaling til en informationsmodel for det danske elsystem. Arbejdsgruppen er etableret på baggrund af en anbefaling fra smart grid netværket, som har været nedsat under Klima-, Energi- og Bygningsministeriet. Elsystemet med såvel tekniske som kommercielle aktører har brug for en fælles informationsmodel, hvorved data nemt kan formidles mellem aktørerne. Der skal sikres, at der ikke opstår kunstige barrierer mellem elsystemets aktører, ved at der bliver installeret udstyr som fx ikke overholder internationale standarder. Vi ønsker derfor at invitere din virksomhed til en workshop om dette emne
