Green Buildings and Solar Systems Overview
• Why Green Buildings?• Federal Programs• State Programs• City Green Building Initiatives• Steps residents can take to reduce energy
used in their home• Photovoltaic system permit process
4
Why Green?
• The level of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere is increasing and causing global warming
• Global warming is causing environmental effects including an increase in sea level
• Too rapid an increase in sea level can cause tremendous damage to infrastructure in coastal areas
5
6
We can make a difference
• Reduction in CO2 production can delay sea level rise and give us more time to respond and relocate as needed
• Use of renewable and sustainable resources protects the environment

California Solar Initiative
A California Public Utilities Commission 10-year, $2.9-billion program
The goal is to increase the amount of installed solar capacity on rooftops in the state by 3,000 megawatts by 2017.

California Energy Code
DBI is required to enforce• DBI enforces this code through plan
review by the Mechanical Plan Review Section, and by the field inspection process
• New construction and renovations are required to be highly energy-efficient
12
California Energy Code Requirements
• Electric resistance space heating and electric resistance water heating are prohibited
13
California Energy Code Requirements
• Furnaces, heat pumps and air conditioners are required to be energy efficient types
14
California Energy Code Requirements
• Window area is regulated and residential windows are required to be energy efficient
15
California Energy Code Requirements
• All new replaced or modified residential light fixtures shall be “high efficacy” type with exceptions.
