    Dear student!

    Environmental sustainability is a core issue or the University o Oslo. Transition to a greenersociety requires all o us to contribute regardless o whether youre student, university leader,

    researcher, administrator or technical sta.

    People are creatures o habit. At the same time, we have a great capacity or innovation and

    taking action when necessary. There is no better time than the beginning o a new semester to

    make small changes that will contribute toward a more sustainable liestyle.

    UiO has already achieved much with respect to environmental issues. However, there is alwaysroom or improvement and throughout this booklet you will read about ways that you can help

    us become even more sustainable. You will also get tips or your own green choices.

    The world needs universities to help understand and solve sustainability challenges. Actions

    and choices we make both as individuals and at the university level can have a signicant

    impact on society as a whole. You, as one student, can impact and be a part o the solutions our

    society needs in order to become more sustainable.

    Green UiO was established in 2010 as UiO environmental sustainability initiative. We are

    to coordinate and build synergy between environmental sustainability research, education

    and operations at the university through collaborative activities.

    vironmental issues! Alternatively, establish a

    Avoid printing documents that can be read on

    screen. This contributes to saving trees!

    Take some elective sustainability-related courses to learn more about sustainability.

    Hold the University Board, Technical Department and SiO responsible or a more sustainable

    and eco-riendly university through direct contact, social media and by writing articles or

    the student newspaper.

    I want you to experience UiO as an environmentally riendly university. In the

    coming years, UiO will take even greater responsibility in order to meet the worldsenvironmental and climatic challenges. Sustainability is the core o the universities

    ounding ideas, and there has to be a clear correspondence between our local and

    global engagement. You are the uture; please help us on our path towards a more

    sustainable university!

    What has UiO achieved so ar?

    Switched rom a petroleum-based to a remote heatingsystem, 100 % renewable energy source or electricity

    and LED outdoor lighting.

    In line with the national agenda, UiO is an internationally

    leading institution on many sustainability-related research

    areas.

    Successully calculated UiO climate gas emissions or year

    2010.

    Provided 68 reports on the energy eciency measures o buildings on campus.

    The Faculty o Educational Sciences has been awarded as the greenest aculty on campus

    with environmental certication.

    UiO is leading the work o incorporating sustainability issues on the agenda among 43

    universities in European capitals through the network UNICA Green Academic Footprint.

    Set eco-riendly criteria or organizing events.

    Signed a number o International Declarations or Sustainability in Higher Education.

    How Can UiO improve?

    Implement energy saving measures and recycling across campus.

    Improve biking acilities on campus by constructing consecutive bike paths

    and bringing City Bike racks to campus.

    Phase out ossil uels used or heating.

    Facilitate the process o taking environmental courses across the aculties.

    Improve Tele/videoconerence arrangements in order to reduce travelling.

    Enhance environmental standards or buildings and procurement, and reusing items.

    Enhance collaboration with local communities, the city and NGOs.

    Increase the number o sustainability-related books at UiO libraries.

    on leading a more eco-riendly liestyle.

    Over 1m birds and sea creatures die each year rom entanglement or consumption o plastic.

    Up to 95 % o electricity can be wasted when you leave the charger in the outlet ater the cell

    phone is ully charged.

    Compared with tap water, plastic bottled water consumes 1500 times more energy.

    About 25 %o the ood produced in Norway ends up in garbage bins.

    I want a more sustainable liestyle!

    What can I do? Walk, bike or use public transport.

    Get a reusable cup or your coee and bring your

    water bottle along.

    Avoid products with unnecessary plastic wrap-

    ping; a lunch box rom home is the most envi-

    ronmentally riendly choice.

    Reduce your meat consumption. Meat contrib-

    utes to about 18 % o greenhouse gas emissions.

    Talk to your riends about green alternatives. Social

    media can be ecient communication channels.

    the Green Guide to Oslos list o organic restaurants, green apps and second-hand stores(www.gronnguide.no).

    Theres only one corner o the universe you can be certain o improving, and

    thats your own sel. So you have to begin there, not outside, not on other people.

    The student parliament is a major driving orce or concrete environmental eorts,

    such as the establishment o Green UiO. As a signicant societal actor, UiO should pave

    the way in the ght against the biggest challenge o our time: the climate crisis.

    Consumer Tips good or the wallet,

    good or well-being and good or the environment!

    Check the ridge: letover dinners are underestimated.

    Make a shopping list: impulsive purchases are oten expensive and unsustainable.

    Ask or organic products! This increases the demand.

    Remember to bring a shopping bag or backpack.

    Go or durable products instead o low quality ones.

    Birthday presents: How about an invitation or dinner, a concert or a homemade card? Visit second hand stores and fea markets. Create your own style!

    Borrow what you dont need to own and plan or swapping events with riends.

    Give away clothes and things you dont need to Fretex, UFF or fea markets.

    Plan dinners with riends.

    Have more vegetables but less meat.
