Securing the future of the diverse and beautiful wildlife of this unique part of Africa requires a mult-faceted approach encompassing all members of the human community of Laikipia, as well as all other species. This ranges from

community outreach, engagement and education, to anti-poaching activities and habitat management. The projects outlined below represent individual elements of the comprehensive approach that Segera and the Zeitz Foundation adopt to ensure that wildlife is able to thrive not only on Segera but also throughout Laikipia County. Some of these projects also provide an opportunity to give a loved one a truly unique present in the form of an animal they love becoming their namesake!

4Cs ProjectsThe Zeitz Foundation and Segera

Both Segera itself and Laikpia in general are faced with many pressing needs if conservation and habitat

management are to continue to improve and the livelihoods of all our neighbours are to be improved. Segera, as a Long Run Destination, implements a holistic approach to achieving sustainable management of the ecosystem in which we are situated: what we call the ‘4C’s’ approach to sustainable ecosystems management. This ensures that all initiatives or projects that are undertaken by the Zeitz Foundation throughout Laikipia and on Segera itself encompass the 4C’s - Community, Conservation, Culture and Commerce. You are already a part of the solution to the problems that people face in this area simply by visiting Segera, but if you would like to consider doing more, the following list indicates some of the projects that we are involved in and how and why you can support these.

We encourage you, in addition to your Safari on Segera, to take the time to visit a local

village and see for yourself how beautiful, interesting and difficult life in Laikipia really is. We have no doubt that you will be touched by the experience and hopefully compelled to help in some way. The Zeitz Foundation has an excellent track record of maximizing the good from donations, put in financial terms the return on donors investment is huge.

If you do want to help please ask your host at Segera Retreat to put you in touch with the Zeitz Foundation for details of the projects that are listed below, or even better, take a tour of some of our completed projects in the nearby area with Zeitz Foundation staff. It can start now by simply making a cash or credit card donation when you check out. You will receive a receipt from the Foundation and we will send you periodic progress updates with photos of your project from start to completion. When you come back you can meet the people you are helping and see for yourself the difference your contribution has made.

ENDANGERED SPECIES CONSERVATION PROJECTS:

Cheetahs and African wild dogs are icons of Africa’s remaining

wilderness. Both species range across vast areas. Because few protected areas are big enough to contain them, the survival of these two increasingly threatened species depends upon sharing the landscape with people. Working with local communities in the rangelands of Laikipia, we use research to find ways for cheetahs and wild dogs to coexist with people, and share our findings with all sectors of society through participatory theatre, leading to behavioural changes and improved range management practices to enhance wild dog and

cheetah conservation. The Zeitz Foundation and Segera are collaborating in this project with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL).1. For a donation of US$

4,000, you can support the purchase and collaring of wild dogs to assist in tracking and monitoring for better habitat management and conservation.

2. For a donation of US$ 25,000, you can support the essential community outreach

Monkeys, which are endangered in Kenya. For the last two years, the Zeitz Foundation and members of the Segera Ranger Force have monitored one troop located on the western boundary of the ranch and near to the retreat on a daily basis. Their role is to provide security for the troop, monitor their movement, home range, and the

interaction between individuals and keep count on mortality and births. There is currently one operational team and it is now planned to raise the money for a second team required to monitor the second group.

The Zeitz Foundation, Segera and Mpala Wildlife Research Centre plan to collaborate on this elephant conservation project. The Uaso Ecosystem, with Segera at its heart, is a vast (~40,000 km2) and diverse landscape across which roam more than 6,000 elephants,

representing Kenya’s second largest elephant population. The population has been increasing steadily over the past two decades but is now threatened with a surge in illegal killing not witnessed since the 1980s. In the past 2 years, elephant deaths due to poaching have exceeded the sum of the previous decade. Clearly, we have a crisis on our hands. The aim of this project is to ensure research provides better information on elephant movements and ensure that this information is shared with local communities to raise awareness of the value of elephants and how to mitigate human/wildlife conflict

Elephant Conservation

1. For a donation of US$ 10,000 you can ensure that radio collaring equipment is purchased to enable the tracking of one herd of elephant and provide an ‘early warning system’ for communities and authorities about poachers in the vicinity of this herd.

2. For a donation of US$ 1000, you can ensure 12 performances of the community theatre outreach that performs to raise awareness and appreciation of these iconic species throughout Laikipia and contribute to the conservation of their habitat.

Elephant naming rights will be available to supporters.

Lion Conservation

Zeitz Foundation and Segera are collaborating with

Mpala Wildlife Research Centre on lion conservation throughout Laikipia. Our research aims to measure the impact of lions on endangered Grevy’s zebras and other declining ungulates in Laikipia, and to produce a teaching curriculum that engages school children in the dynamics of predator/prey relationships. Our research will improve our understanding of wildlife

trends, help manage competing needs of predators, prey, pastoralists and ecotourism, and encourage positive attitudes toward lions and other predators among Kenyan children.

1. A donation of US$ 5,000 will secure the collaring and tracking of one lion pride.

2. A donation of US$ 2,000 will ensure the production of teaching materials for local schools to enable

successful outreach and awareness raising.

3. For a donation of US$ 1000, you can ensure 12 performances of the community theatre outreach that performs to raise awareness and appreciation of these iconic species throughout Laikipia and contribute to the conservation of their habitat.

Naming rights to individual lions will be available.

The answer is that whilst outreach and education are vital components, with rhino horn currently valued at twice that of gold, additional measures to ensure wildlife security have to be adopted to compliment this. Laikipia, like the rest of Africa, has seen a recent upsurge in commercial

poaching, particularly of elephant and rhino. This is driving these and other endangered species to the verge of extinction. A variety of measures are required to combat this increasing threat to the survival of wildlife. As described in the projects below, these range from enhanced security training and patrols to improved communications abilities, accompanied by the necessary equipment to ensure these are effective. But these efforts bear a hefty price tag and it is only with assistance from others that they can be achieved.

WILDLIFE SECURITY:How do you protect something more valuable than gold?

Segera Anti Poaching Personnel

Here on Segera itself, we need to increase our security capacity to not only provide strong law enforcement

within the Ranch but also to be able to act in support of government agencies and neighbouring communities in our immediate vicinity. This requires hiring additional personal and providing appropriate training and equipment.

$2,500 pays for 1 fully equipped person for 12 months.$10,000 pays for 1 x 4 fully equipped security team for a year. $1,500 pays for basic training for one person. $600 provides for the ‘refresher’ training that 1 scout has to undergo each year.

Laikipia Central and West has re-cently been the target of poach-ing gangs after elephant for their

Ivory. This aircraft would be used to carry out daily aerial patrols of wild-life rangeland in West and Central Laikipia. Patrols and reporting will be closely integrated with the Ke-nya Wildlife Service through their new Anti Poaching Team based on the neighbouring Laikipia National Park and the Ol Pejeta Rapid Re-action Team. Patrols would moni-tor the movement of elephant con-centrations across the area and would include the aerial tracking of predators with collars that may have strayed into communal land where there may be conflict. The presence of such an aircraft alone would act as a significant deterant to would be poachers.

US$ 110,000 will purchase a PA 18 Piper Cub aircraft for Surveillance work.US$ 5250 will fund 25 Hours of sur-veillance flying in a PA 18 Aircraft

Naming rights for the aircraft will be available.

Radio Communications: Wildlife Monitoring and Security.

This will provide a vital communication link between ranches, private and communal, within Laikipia. Good communication will facilitate

the rapid reaction to poaching and general security issues. Once again, the fact that security teams from different areas can communicate and work as a single cohesive entity is a deterrent in itself. The Segera radio control room will act as the reporting and coordinating base.

US$ 22,000 is required to purchase a 150 foot Lattice Mast, 1 X Motorolla Repeater, Wind Generator, Solar Panels, Battery Bank and Repeater Room to ensure that effective communications are established.

Security Patrol Aircraft for Laikipia:

While Segera and it’s neighbouring c o m m e r c i a l

ranches are a core sanctuary for wildlife and vital to maintaining wildlife migration corridors, our neighbouring communities are also regularly visited by wildlife. Many of these communities have a dream of one day benefiting from tourism and other wildlife related benefits and to this end their dream starts with ensuring that wildlife is

valued and secure on their lands. Segera and our neighbouring communities are planning to create 4 Community Scout Units, with three personnel by mid-2016.

$1,655 funds will fund one community scout for 1 year with his/her equipment and training. $5,000 will fund a complete team of three Community Scouts for 1 year with equipment and training.

Page 7: Greater Segera 4Cs Projects - ZeitzFoundation Projects Brochure.pdf · 4Cs Projects The Zeitz Foundation and Segera B oth Segera itself and Laikpia in general are faced with many

The answer will largely depend on who and where you are and how you make your living! If you’re a visitor to Segera,

its definitely ‘oh my’, if you live in the vicinity it may be ‘oh no’. Segera is home to a large number of predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs and hyena – both spotted and striped. But the range of all these predators is vast, extending well beyond the boundaries of Segera. These animals are able to coexist with the commercial ranching aspect of Segera through best practice ranching, whereby the onus on the protection of the livestock is upon the management of the ranch and where the safety of visitors and staff can be assured.

The situation is however different for our community neighbours, many of whom earn their living from livestock. For these people, predators are a menace, with frequent life-threatening conflicts occurring between livestock, humans and predators.

Segera and the Zeitz Foundation aim to create a mobile team which will operate both on Segera and amongst neighbouring communities to monitor predator movement and predation incidents both on wildlife and livestock and train local people on means to

Protecting the big cats: Lions, Cheetahs and leopards, ‘oh my’ or ‘oh no’?

reduce this conflict. In addition to monitoring predators on and off Segera, the team would be involved in elephant and Grevy zebra Identification and setting up detailed photo databases of all animals resident or transient across the Ranch.

The single largest threat to wildlife throughout Africa is loss of and degrading natural habitat, particularly range, forests and water sources. This holds true throughout Laikipia. Both on and off Segera, we have plans to reverse existing degradation and restore habitat to its

natural state, thus allowing the full complement of indigenous bio-diversity to thrive.

HABITAT MANAGEMENT:

Water is Life!A

ll creatures great and small, from elephants, migrant birds to bats rely on water for their survival. Segera is

geographically positioned at the center of the Laikipia ecosystem and lies at the heart of wildlife migration corridors. Historically this movement of wildlife was maintained by good pasture and adequate water supplied by the Uaso Nyiro, Kisergaie, Segera, Sugeroi and Muthara Rivers. More recently, however growth of the human population and the unchecked extraction of water from these rivers and those of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountain Ranges has resulted in three of the four becoming seasonal and in very dry years even the mighty Uaso Nyiro dries up. Wildlife needs grazing, water and

security; the pasture is already on the range and with improved management, is getting better annually. Our challenge on Segera is to now address the issue of depleted water sources.

Segera plans to build a series of rock and concrete weirs down the Segera and Kisergaie River Valleys that will catch water during the rains and provide for wildlife throughout the dry season. In the north of the ranch the plan is to build more earth dams that can sustainably harvest and store rainfall.

A donation of $45,000 will ensure the construction of one dam or weir.

Decades of over-grazing, tree cutting for charcoal

production and periods of drought have resulted in severe deforestation and

Reforestation – The Wangari Maathai woodlots:

degradation of the Segera environment and its surrounds. Tree planting contributes to reversing this negative development. The Zeitz Foundation has established the Waangari Maathai forest in honour of the late conservationist and Nobel Prize winner to ensure reafforestation both on and off Segera. 1. For a donation of US$

1,000, one thousand indigenous trees can be planted and

nurtured, leading to a survival rate of approx. 600 trees.

2. A donation of US$ 2,000 enables the establishment of a community tree nursery, providing not just a constant supply of thousands of seedlings for re-afforestation but also a small-scale commercial enterprise providing local employment.

Bursary Scheme:

The Zeitz Foundation’s bursary scheme assists bright students from poor families in

Laikipia to grow into resourceful and socially active adults. The selection process is undertaken in a transparent manner and is based upon need and performance. Bursary recipients must be in their final year of primary education and have a high record of academic performance. Bursaries are offered to an equal number of boys and girls. Whilst bursaries for one year are accepted, sponsors are encouraged to support their student for the four years of secondary education to ensure that they are able to complete their education. The Zeitz Foundation and student provide regular annual reports to the sponsors on the progress the child is making.

For US$ 660 per year, you can provide a child with education (inclusive of food, accommodation and tuition) that will ensure they have real opportunities in life and are able to contribute to their community.

COMMUNITY, CULTURE AND COMMERCE:

Internationally renowned footballer Samuel Eto’, and patron of the Laikipia and Beyond Unity Cup (LUC), has committed

to founding the Samuel Eto’o Laikipia Unity Football Academy and school as a result of his involvement in the LUC. The model school is based on a unique architectural design, developed by PITCH_Africa, for a high yield rainwater harvesting school and community center arranged around a 1,500-seat sport stadium and 1-million litre water reservoir. The Academy will consequently

The Academy and secondary school will also incorporate an Environmental Education and Outreach Center and will serve as a Headquarters for the Laikipia Unity League/LUC and the hub for environmental outreach activities

Additional financing of US$ 121,000 is sought to complete this development. This is broken down as follows:

1. A donation of US$ 25,000 would enable an upgrade of the existing boys dormitory to accommodate 120 boys (from existing 60).

2. A donation of US$ 26,000 would secure construction of ablution blocks for students and staff.

3. A donation of US$ 44,000 would ensure that professional quality ‘artificial turf’ surface is incorporated into the Eto’o Academy Stadium.

Naming rights will be given to all buildings for which sponsorship is provided

For a donation of US$ 1,000 per year, you can provide a special bursary to send one talented young Laikipian footballer to the Samuel Eto’o Academy, ensuring their future is bright. Sponsors are encouraged to provide a bursary for the four years the child will attend the Academy.

Laikipia Unity Programme 4Cs support:T

he Laikipia Unity Programme (LUP) is an integrated and region-wide program to cultivate peace and improve standards

of living – particularly for women and youth - and promote environmentally sustainable livelihoods across Laikipia County. The LUP introduces and rapidly scales-up sustainable water, energy and conservation agriculture methodologies and technologies using the powerful and unifying medium of football as a catalyst. The LUP, the patron of which is footballer Samuel Eto’o – address’s livelihood and environmental issues affecting the Laikipia community through the foundation’s 4Cs philosophy of Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce which focuses on biodiversity conservation, community development, cultural stewardship and social entrepreneurship.

1. For a donation of US$ 1,000, you can support the LUP through the purchase of soccer equipment, including 100 footballs and a set of goal posts.

2. For a donation of US$ 10,000, you can sponsor one of the 8 LUP zones and its conservation, cultural and community development for a one year period. This means you will be funding a variety of different projects that improve the livelihoods and enhance environmental management in your zone. These projects include: establishment of indigenous tree nurseries and tree planting, conservation agriculture, rainwater harvesting, water and sanitation, village ‘clean-up’ campaigns, solar lighting and low energy cookers to mention just a few.

Domestic water supply through sustainable rain-water harvesting:

The population of Laikipia is growing rapidly, and current water usage trends are

socially, environmentally and economically unsustainable. To emerge from poverty, the region needs access to good quality water in sufficient quantity and purity and with adequate and equitable distribution systems. The Zeitz Foundation pioneers, promotes and demonstrates appropriate rainwater harvesting, purification and storage technologies. Several of the new approaches developed and introduced locally have been recognised and received awards globally.

For a donation of US$ 1,000, you can help us install an underground water tank and rainwater harvesting system to meet the annual domestic water needs of 10 households (approx. 80 people) and help address community health issues – approximately 80% of illness in Laikipia results from polluted water sources - brought about by water scarcity and pollution. This also ensures that families are able to establish a domestic gardens for vegetable production, which also improves standards of nutrition.

Page 12: Greater Segera 4Cs Projects - ZeitzFoundation Projects Brochure.pdf · 4Cs Projects The Zeitz Foundation and Segera B oth Segera itself and Laikpia in general are faced with many

Conservation Agriculture:

Through the introduction of Conservation Agriculture, the Zeitz Foundation improves the agricultural productivity

of communities throughout Laikipia in the sustainable utilization of natural resources of land and water in these farming systems. Conservation Agriculture requires zero tillage, reduces moisture and fertility loss in soils, and requires zero inputs of artificial pesticides and fertilizers. The Zeitz Foundation has already established 4 training plots for this unique farming system around Greater Segera and based on the success of these plots, plans to introduce a further ten throughout Laikipia to provide additional training to thousands in the County.

For a donation of US$ 3,000, you can help the Zeitz Foundation establish a new

conservation agriculture training plot and provide 3 training sessions for a group of 30 local farmers, usually women. This ensures that households are able to establish their own conservation agriculture enterprises and generate sustainable incomes for themselves whilst using the natural resource base sustainably.

New Waterbank School buildings at Ireri Primary School:

The Waterbank School buildings, designed by PITCH-Africa, is a multiple award wining, alternative, low cost, school

design for poor regions in need of water. The pilot of this design was introduced for the first time at the Uaso Nyiro school by the Zeitz Foundation in 2012. The unique 600m2 roof design can harvest more than 350,000 litres of rainwater annually, which means that the 700 plus students who attend the Uaso Nyiro school receive 5 litres of clean water a day year round.

The Waterbank School buildings also help the community by dramatically reducing illnesses and malnutrition (up to 80% of disease here is caused by water borne pollutants) and ensures that schools achieve greater gender equality as the girls in the community no longer have to spend hours

every day collecting water, time which can be dedicated to their school work instead. The Waterbank School buildings is built from local materials with local labour for the same cost as a conventional linear school, and also provides protected gardens for growing fresh vegetables and a community workshop and courtyard theater for school community gatherings and environmental theater.

For a donation of US$ 48,000, you can provide the funding that would enable the construction of a second Waterbank School which is desperately needed at Ireri Primary School.

Exclusive naming rights will be assured.

Water filters:C

eramic Water Filtration is an open source locally produced water filtration system developed originally in Nicaragua.

These filters can remove 99% of all known bacteria from water, providing clean and healthy water for domestic consumption. Currently 80% of all illness in Laikipia is caused by water borne pollutants.

This project assists families at Greater Segera and throughout Laikipia gain access to clean water through the demonstration and distribution of these water filters.

For a donation of US$500 you can ensure 15 families (120 people) have access to clean water through the provision of ceramic water filters.

Much of the work of the Zeitz Foundation’s relating to

community development has focused on the promotion of alternative income generating opportunities for our immediate neighbours in the vicinity of Segera. By transforming the age-old tradition of beading and handicraft into a financially viable enterprise, the SATUBO Beading Group (which stands for and symbolises the unity of its members from different

ethnic groups, SAmburu TUrkana and BOrana) is empowering women and improving lives. SATUBO fully incorporates the 4C’s philosophy of sustainability by promoting Conservation through the creation of an alternative source of income that limits the dependence on livestock and reduces overgrazing. This benefits the entire Community by empowering women and sustains an important part of the local Culture by preserving their beading and traditional designs and promoting local Commerce by offering women the opportunity to obtain an independent income and financial freedom.

By purchasing beading products from SATUBO, you are directly supporting the preservation of local Culture while at the same time empowering these women by providing the market to enable them to ensure that this becomes a commercially sustainable enterprise.

Founded in 2008 by business entrepreneur Jochen Zeitz, Director and Chairman of the Sustainability Committee at Kering, the Zeitz Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization headquartered on Segera in Kenya and with representation in the US, Germany and the UK.

The Zeitz Foundation promotes an innovative approach to sustainable ecosystem management which aims to achieve sustainability through a balance of conservation, community, culture and commerce (the 4Cs). Our aim is to encourage action today for a better tomorrow. Our vision is of an ecosphere – our planet and all of its life-sustaining regions – maintained in the healthiest possible state, with the major contribution to that health coming from people making sustainable choices.

Your being here at Segera helps sustain employment for a community that has few formal employment opportunities. The staff at Segera are the few fortunate ones from our community who have employment, however there are thousands who are not … they too need assistance to climb out of poverty. By supporting our projects you can assist them whilst at the same time ensuring the survival of our unique species and environment. We encourage you to visit our website and/or follow us on facebook for details of our projects and achievements and we are always happy to get feedback from you. Please contact us through:
