Boys and Girls
Flint Northern became the first Flint-area school to capture a
state team tennis championship when it won the Class A-B crown in
1930. Northern was led by its coach Louis Nickels and its state
doubles championship team, of Herman Struck and Roscoe “Buck”
Burgess.

Lapeer played in the Class A regional at Southfield Lathrup in
1973. 3 In 1977 the MHSAA changed the tournament format to that of
a team tournament with the top two teams plus the winner and
runner-up at No.1 singles in each regional advancing to the state
finals. 4 The MHSAA changed the rules allowing all teams that score
16 points at the regional to advance to the state tournament. The
minimum qualification went up to 18 points in 2001.

Mashiska Washington was inserted into Carman-Ainsworth’s lineup for
just the regional tournament. He did not play in any regular season
matches. At the start of the 1989-90 school year, the rules were
change to state that a player must play in a certain amount of
regular season matches in order to participate in the regional
tournament. 8 At the conclusion of the 1996-97 school year, the
MHSAA discarded the Class format in favor of a divisional format. 9
Powers Catholic played in the Class B regional from 1971 to 1983
and from 1991 to 1997. It played in the Class A regional from 1984
to 1990. 10 Holly played in the Class B regional from 1963 to 1979
and from 1981 to 1982. It played in the Class A regional in 1980

*Denotes that Sue Schupack took over Carman-Ainsworth’s team at
8 a.m. on May 8, 2003 (the day of the Big Nine tournament) when
Cavaliers athletic director Bob Root suspended then-coach Doug
Carey for the remainder of the season. Carey was suspended for a
series of behavioral problems that showed a lack of responsibility
in directing the team. He was officially removed from his coaching
position in June of 2003. 11 The Big Nine Conference dropped its
two-thirds/one-third system in favor of a 50/50 system. In the
two-thirds/one-third system, the conference dual meets counted
two-thirds and the conference tournament counted one-third towards
determing the overall league champion. With the 50/50 system, the
duals and conference tournament each count 50 percent towards the
overall championship.
Ray Giguere led Carman High and Carman-Ainsworth to five Big
Nine Conference championships in a six-year span from 1982-87. It
is the most titles won by a non-Grand Blanc coach.

Notes: 1. Grand Blanc won an amazing 151 of the 258 (58.5
percent) of the
flight championships awarded during the school’s 37 seasons in
the league. The Big Nine crowned a singles and doubles champion
from 1973-74 before going to a seven-flight system – four singles
and three doubles – from 1975-2000. The No. 4 doubles flight was
added in 2001. The Big Nine ended its 40-year run after the 2011-12
school year.
2. There were four sweeps in Big Nine history. Grand Blanc won
both
flights – singles and doubles – in 1974, all seven flights in
1979 and all eight flights in 2008. Flushing won all eight flights
in 2011.
3. Grand Blanc is the only Big Nine team to win at least one
flight
championship every year.
4. Flushing swept all eight flights at the final Big Nine
Conference tournament in 2011. The Raiders also won all six of
their Big Nine duals by 8-0 scores, giving the program a 64-0
record in league matches.

Biggest dual meet in Big Nine Conference boys tennis history
April 22, 1980
Flushing 4, Grand Blanc 3
At Flushing
Under the guidance of the legendary Art Vince and a gangly
left-hander named Curtis Wright (pictured below), Flushing downed
Grand Blanc, 4-3, to become the first Big Nine Conference team to
beat the Bobcats. The historic victory was clinched when Wright
beat Grand Blanc’s Tom Johnson, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 1 singles.
The Raiders’ triumph ended Grand Blanc’s string of consecutive
Big Nine dual-meet victories at 66. Later on that season, Flushing
would become the first Big Nine team, other than Grand Blanc, to
win the overall conference title.
