BlueJays win regional track meetClass 5A meet in Yukon this weekend

Guthrie seniors Blake Belcher and Walker Cross in action at Edmond Santa Fe last weekend as they both qualified for this weekend’s state meet in Yukon. Belcher qualified in the shot put. Cross ran a qualifying race for the 4 x 800 meter relay team as well as qualifying in the 1600 meter and 3200 meter races.

The Guthrie BlueJays track team won the Ed-mond Santa Fe Regional Saturday with 162 points, easily outdistancing sec-ond place Ardmore, whom scored 120.5 points. The Lady BlueJays finished in fourth place with 74 points, as altus won the team title with 186 points.

The ‘Jays will be led by a senior group of Walker Cross, Jonathan Ogan and Zack Brown in this year’s meet. All three have prior meet experience and have qualified for two events each this year.

Cross won the 1600 meter race and placed third

in the 3200 meter race to qualify for the Yukon meet. Ogan won the 3200 meter race and finished second to Cross in the 1600 meter event to earn a return trip to the big meet. They will have help in the 3200 race as sophomore Brandon Greenlee has also qualified for the BlueJays.

Brown will return to the state meet in 2012 with a regional title in the discus and a second place finish in the shot put. Brown will get some point help from senior Blake Belcher, who qualified with a third place finish in the shot put.

In other field events,

Guthrie will be sending senior Elias Kellogg and sophomore Landon Solo-rio in the pole vaults as the two teammates went 1-2 in the Edmond meet this past weekend. Kellogg went 13’0” to claim first place. Freshman Winn Hughes is going to state after a first place finish in the long jump. Guthrie teammate Kelyn Hinds also qualified.

The BlueJays quali-fied all three relay teams, the 4 x100, the 4 x400 and the 4 x 800 meter teams. The 4 x100 team will con-sist of Cabron Smith, JT McFadden, Calvin Parker and Hughes. The 4 x 400

team that qualified includes Adam Noriega,Parker, Hinds and Hughes. The 4 x800 team includes Hunter Sallee, Noriega, Taylor Self and Cross.

In the sprint races, Parker will have to hold down the fort in the 100 meter race as he was the

only qualifier in any of the races.

On the girl’s side of the ledger, junior Susie Unger will be very busy young lady this weekend as the Guthrie junior runs in the 100 meter run, the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles as well as the

4 x 100 meter relay team. Kyra Macedo will join Un-ger in the 300 meter race, as well as the 4 x 100 meter relay team.

Lauren Toney in the 1600 meter race and Ashley Watkins in the pole vault are the other two qualifiers for the Lady BlueJays.
