The Mighty Mamallas gathered together on
July 5 to welcome the very rst batch of
PGDM students. The esteemed personality
to be the Guest of Honour was Dr K Rosaiah,
Governor of Tamil Nadu. As a tradion, the
ceremony began with an invocaon song,
this me presented by students from villages
of Karma Yoga, our Leadership Experienal
Project. The song Thamizh Thai Vazhthu
sung in Tamil by the small kids mesmerized
all. Following this, Uncle Bala presented to
our honourable guest, Dr. K Rosaiah, the Ponnadai. Dr. Rosaiah lauded the eorts of Uncle Bala and his
vision of pung Chennai on the internaonal management educaon map, which eventually led to the
seng up of the Great Lakes Instute of Management. Present among the special guests were Mr.
Shantanu Prakash, founder of Educomp Soluons and Mr. Mohan Lakhamraju, Director Great Lakes.

It was yet another day at campus, but there was
something really special about it. Something which
had brought all hands to work together, all minds to
ponder on planning and execuon and all prepara-
ons to make it gargantuan as it was so exceponal
to all of us. Yes, it was the Great Lakes Founders Dayand an accolade to the -Man behind the Show-, our
very own Uncle Balas 75th
birthday. That day, we
were enlightened with signicant insights into his life and achievements and got to know
how the place where we are now came into being and its journey through excellence. This
called for a grand celebraon, so we were all game to Make it Large.
Uncle Bala blew the candles over his giant 75th
birthday cake
and the theatre roared with applause and ecstasy. We couldnot think of a present that could match up to the calibre of the
dignied man so we decided to extend to him the atude of
support and our hands reaching out to the world to accomplish
his vision in the form of gra. We were also proud to launch
our ocial magazine Gravity current issue: Technology for
Inclusive innovaon on this auspicious occasion. The inspiring
words from Uncle Bala encouraged us to feel at home and give in our best to the instute.
The Mighty Mamallas had set the stage on re
with a series of performances songs, dances,
poems, music and a skit. It was a magnicent
start with a ash mob performance followed by
some impressive Bollywood dance performanc-
es. And that was not all, no celebraon can go on
without our band of boys PAAST and this me
they were Rolling in the Deep with the enre
auditorium tuning in to their every beat.

And the list goes on with exuberant pieces of talent impending turn by turn. Most mirthful
of all was the skit Meaningful Cinema which le all of us rolling into our seats. It was a
blend of mockery of Bollywood stars and scenes and a sare on management educaon,
but was hearelt with the theme Forget all the logics, just laugh your heart out. It was
super fun and we made it the most happening day ll now. No wonder they say The more
the merrier. We were all spellbound with a sense of accomplishment and content in our
hearts to Make it Large.

AlCom organised the Bangalore Alumni meet on the 14th
of July at Vaayu Sky Lounge on
Brigade road, Bangalore. For the Alumni, it was the perfect place and me to unwind aer
a busy work week and catch up with fellow batch mates and the network of other Great
Lakers from Pioneers to Spartans. It was a lively evening with a crowd of over 90 Great
Lakers, interacng and enjoying under Hawaiian-style shacks and tents and simply enjoying
the stunning views of the starlit skies above and the gliering streets below.
Members from AlCom 2013 interacted with the alumni, brieng them about the latest in-
stute happenings like the new hostel coming up for the PGDM students to the various
events organised in campus. The evening proceeded in the back drop of light music and
loads of cheers and sounds from Great Lakers.

Its always interesng to hear from stalwarts of the college and get an insight into their lives aer Great
Lakes. We were fortunate to get the insights of two such successful Great Lakers for this issue. Read on!
Im not so keen on spending me reiterang the thoughts
and feelings going through and experienced by everyone who
has passed out of Great Lakes. While I share the same emo-
ons, and possibly more, passing out of Great Lakes meantmuch more to me. It was the end of the educaon related
expectaons of my parents and I would never have to hear,
Would you please stop wasng me and do your home-
work? from either of them.
I was always interested in music right from an early age. The
inecon point with regard to my musical ambions came in
2001 when I went for my rst big show of Bryan Adams.
Looking at the crowd, the energy and everything else that
came along with the show, I knew I needed to be on stage. I
enrolled for guitar classes the following week, and the mad-
ness hasnt stopped since then.
It thankfully connued at Great Lakes when I met fellow rock enthusiast and vocalist Tejas Bhat, with
whom I set o to start the Straight Fs. We were joined by fellow enthusiasts - Rohit Das (music wizard
and drummer), Sumit Singh (lead guitarist) and Parag Barhate (bass). Thanks to them and the people who
did not chase us o stage, the madness sll connues. Im sure if you ask a lot of my batch mates what
their inial impressions were about me, the rst thing they would tell you is that they saw this tubby fel-
low lugging his guitar around and refusing to part with it even during the outbound training.
The big advantage of compleng my post-graduaon was that I was free to pursue my ambions as a gui-
tarist without any interrupons from exams. And thats what I have been up to. Since I passed out in 2010,
Ive been working 5 (and somemes 6) days a week at the oce and then spending the enre weekend
praccing with the band. Weve had quite a few shows at various venues over the last 2 years. The most
interesng one was when we played at an event organized by an NGO and performed on the plaorm of
the Malleswaram Railway Staon in Bangalore. We had the debut show of the most recent avatar of the
band The 18th
Cross Experiment, at Alliance Franaise this June as part of their annual music fesval -

The big take away from Great Lakes that has helped in ensuring I dont have to give up on either is the ex-
perience of one year of having to balance assignments and so many other things along with band pracce
of the Straight Fs , that at mes would start at 2 AM and go up to 4 AM. Im also fortunate to have
known my batch mate and good friend, Soumyo, from Great Lakes. Som as we call him is the lead guitar-
ist in the band we currently play in. He introduced me to the music school I go to. As long as I can keep
playing on stage, I dont see myself stopping. And thats the grand plan for now just play more and more
shows. Someday, we could be up there with the likes of other top Indian bands like Parikrama, Swarathma,
and Galeej Gurus and hopefully we can graduate to playing at bigger venues like Hard Rock Caf and the
Kingsher October fest this year. Keeping my ngers crossed! Id like to end with a quote by Pete Towns-
hend, guitarist and songwriter for the rock group The Who, The day you open your mind to music, youre
halfway to opening your mind to life.

And from another talented maestro Soumyo Kan Mitra, from the Patriots, 2010 batch, shares with us his
experience at Great Lakes and his love for what binds us all together, MUSIC!
I have had a keen interest in rock music since high
school. During those days I had built a decent collec-
on of album tapes of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, U2 and
other rock and roll arsts which I would listen to over
and over again on my Walkman. I also was lucky to
watch many of the greatest rock legends perform live
in concert in Bangalore and aer every show I woulddream of being a lead guitarist playing a killer solo on
stagewhile the crowd cheered as I played each note.
Prior to Great Lakes, lifes goals were mostly focused
towards career and following a hobby was considered
secondary. I wanted to pursue an MBA from a premier
business school and managed to enter Great Lakes in
the Patriots batch (class of 2010). At B-school, I saw
ve of my fellow batch mates scramble together and
create the rst avatarof the college rock band which
they named The Straight Fs. Although not a part ofthe band, I spent quite some me with them while
they jammed between assignments and classes and I really enjoyed watching them trying to make the band
work through all the madness of B-School.
Watching them perform on stage, the same classic songs which I listened to so many mes, made me devel-
op the urge to play the guitar and be a part of a band.
It was only aer a few months into my post MBA job that I bought a new acousc guitar and enrolled for
classes. I chose an instute that not only taught the guitar but also helped its students develop the style of
guitar playing consistent with rock and roll. I asked my good friend and fellow rock enthusiast Nikhilesh
who incidentally is one of the founding members of the Straight Fs if he would like to join the classes andhe readily agreed. Our interest to form a rock band was taken into consideraon by the school and in the
mid of 2011, we played our rst gig as a band. That was the rst me I played the guitar on stage and the
experience was surreal. From that moment on I knew I was hooked onto it and there has been no looking
back.
We have done quite a few shows over the past year, including one at a railway staon for a fund raiser or-
ganized by an NGO. Recently as the band The 18th
Cross Experiment, we did a half an hour show at a mu-
sic fest organized by Alliance Franaise, which was the biggest stage show for us yet in terms of the audi-
ence size. We do hope that bigger gigs will come our way as me progresses. Till now, we have been a cover
band but we have started to develop our own composions and are preparing to play one at our next show.

Although my music journey began during the past two years while I was working, I nd it easier to pursue
it aer my educaon. I now feel that I have a more regular lifestyle and that my career path has already
been chosen, leaving me free to follow my hobbies duringmy spare me. I have to admit that taking a
hobby seriously along with work is not an easy proposion. In order to accelerate my guitar learning, I
would spend three to four hours every day praccing scales and licks on the guitar. Being a late sleeper, I
would nd it comfortable to start my pracce post dinner ll about 2 am. I would then get my 7 hours of
sleep, get up at 9 am and reach oce by 10 am.
Another reason why working and pursuing a hobby is beer is because the pressure of a steady income
source is migated. Although it might be dicult to try to do both together, it is not impossible. That there
are so many people out there who seriously pursue their hobby while managing to do well at work is tes-
mony to this fact. Also, geng the habit of doing mulple things together is important, which was the best
lesson I learnt at Great Lakes. During the one year as a Patriot, I learnt how to have fun and work a lot
while always being under tremendous pressure.
I have been fortunate enough to nd a great guitar teacher and a music school that has been so crucial in
developing the band and geng us gigs. Also, knowing people like Nikhilesh and my other band members
has been a huge support since they are all very enthusiasc about music in spite of having hecc work
schedules. Id like to conclude bysaying that me is not a limitaon, it is an opportunity. If one can nurture
a keen interest to pursue something they like, thenone would automacally start looking at the availabil-
ity of me instead of its shortage.

And heres another inspiring chronicle about Sijo Kuruvilla from the Champions, 2009 batch.
On the road less travelled
"Here's to the crazy ones, the mists, the rebels, the troublemakers,
the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things dier-
ently - they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with
them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore
them because they change things... They push the human race for-ward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see geni-
us, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can
change the world, are the ones who do", said Steve Jobs in 1997
when he was trying to revive the fortune of Apple with a new punch
line for his ad campaign, Think Dierent. Thanks to that Think
Dierent approach Steve gied to the world the iconic iPod, iPh-
one, iPad and lled Apples coer with more than what the US Gov-
ernment has at this point in me.
And, thinking dierent is what Sijo Kuruvilla George, the CEO of Startup Village, a public private enter-prise, and an alumnus of Great Lakes of the Champions batch has been doing. The entrepreneur zeal in him
hits one like a bolt from the blue right at the Home Page of his website startupvillage.in with a daring
quote of Lebanese American author Nassim Nicholas Taleb, who once said, The Three Most Harmful Ad-
dicons are HEROIN, CAROBHYDRATES AND A MONTHLY SALARY.
Sijo indeed had plenty of opportunies to get addicted to monthly salary as he had brief snts at Brish
Oxygen and Infosys and also oered consultancies to some of most reputed organizaons like Deloie and
PricewaterhouseCoopers to name a few. However, his quest for that one big idea, thats innovave, and so
enterprising that not only whets his own entrepreneurial appete, but also provides a plaorm to young
people across the country to unleash their entrepreneurial potenal. It culminated in the seng up Startup
Village. Its already o to a ying start when Infosys co-founder and one of the mentors of this new enty,
Kris Gopalakrishnan, inaugurated the rst Startup Village in April this year in Kerala. Sijo truly lives up to
what Uncle Bala says, Passion with compassion. As a CEO, he isnt in the mad race for prots but wants to
give back to the country by nurturing 1000 new startups in the upcoming decade. Cumulavely, this would
translate to over 25,000 in employment, over 100 crores in investments and over 2000 crores in revenues.
This indeed is a noble iniave.
7/30/2019 Great Connect August 2012

So what is this Startup Village really all about? It is Indias
largest incubaon aempt ll date with a mission to create a
1000 startups over the next 10 years and start the search for a
billion dollar campus startup, explains Sijo.
Can that billion-dollar start up you are looking for come from
Great Lakes?Denitely. Given the world-class faculty, top
quality of students who get in here aer a rigorous selecon process, and the exposure that one gets at
Great Lakes, it surely can come up with that one big idea, says Sijo, but for that to happen someone
should make a start, Great Lakes has already produced many entrepreneurs. I wouldnt be surprised if thebillion-dollar start up is from Great Lakes.
Quong Steve Jobs, Sijo emphasizes Dont sele for less, whatever you are thinking, think big, and think
dierent. Times are changing. There is no dearth of opportunies. Possibilies are endless today. Figure out
what you are passionate about, and just follow on your passion. Apple and HP, of course, legends now for
the way they were born in garages, but lile did we know that an IT startup Innoz, ranked among the top
10 IT emerging companies in the country, was started by 4 college dropouts. This is where passion plays a
role.
The entrepreneur in Sijo took roots during his Engineering days in
2007, when he started MobME with ve of his friends. Currently it
has an annual turnover of Rs.25 crore and has 100 employeesspread over various locaons.
Though its been three years since he completed my Leadership,
Inuence, and Power elecve at Great Lakes, I disnctly remem-
ber Sijo, says Professor Venkat R. Krishnan, director, Yale-Great Lakes Centre for Management Research,
because he stood out from the rest very obviously. There was clear evidence that he would venture out on
the road less travelled. I am condent that his innovave spirit will take him to even greater heights.
He was lateral thinker. He used to think out of the box. I am really very happy for him, says Dr. Rakesh P
Singh, Professor of Macroeconomics, whom Sijo fondly remembers as Rocky Sir.
Recalling his me in Great Lakes where he graduated in 2009, Sijo says, Even though I was already an en-
trepreneur, I am grateful to Great Lakes for opportunity to interact with diverse and experienced talentpool in my batch, coupled with a world class faculty. The exposure and quality of learning being provided by
Great lakes is unparalleled in the country.
Given an opportunity I will surely like to visit the new Great Lakes campus in Mahabalipuram. Who knows,
my alma mater may provide me the billion-dollar start up idea that my Startup Village has been searching
for, Sijo concluded.

Other happenings on campus
The Mighty Mamallas were fortunate to be graced with
the presence of Mr. K. Murali, Senior Vice President
Technology at Fullerton Financial Holdings who obliged
to lecture us on Market Trends in BFSI and IT.
Mr. Murali is the Senior Vice President Technology at
Fullerton Financial Holdings and comes with a wealth of
experience. Prior to this, he contributed as IT SoluonsHead at Dunia Finance, as VP - Asset Plaorms at Ci-
bank Regional Oce London, as VICE PRESIDENT-
EMEA Regional Technology Oce at Cigroup, as VP Ci
EMEA - UK at Cibank, VP at Cibank N.A, Singapore,
and Consultant- IT Soluons Group at IFLEX SOLUTIONS LIMITED. Having nished his educa-
on from Loyola College Chennai, Mr. Murali feels he has so far been lucky to have worked
closely with exceponal teams across emerging markets in building Banking and Financial
Services Soluons.
Mr. Murali started his speech with Customer Sasfacon and the importance of pung cus-tomers rst. According to him, customers demand quicker improvements to services they
nd unacceptable, while technological change presents both new opportunies to adaptable
organisaons on an almost daily basis, and threats to the very survival of the poorly pre-
pared. To succeed in such a demanding environment one has to maintain the very best cus-
tomer service techniques that have served well in the past, and one must embrace the latest
techniques to movate and encourage sta to be alwaysPung Customers First. He
brought out the needs of every customer and categorised them into essenally being unbi-
ased service, convenience, making life simple and a personal touch and explained how just
by following some basic thumb rule we can win this game.
Slowly he moved towards Innovaon and linked it to be one of the weapons helping a rm to
increase customer sasfacon and gain loyal customers. With situaon rapidly changing
with me, the rules of doing a business which held true in the past are almost obsolete now.
The advent of IT and technology has changed the way the world responds to everything. Cus-
tomers' needs, their wants are geng more complex with every passing day. In such dynam-
ic environment, its only Innovaon that can help one to stay ahead in the race and win it
eventually: Innovate or Die: Customers are going to move on.

Speaking about China He commented that China is among the biggest market for online
trading: 70% economic acvity happens in the Beijing-Shanghai-Guangdong belt; 50% of the
Chinese populaon are internet users. Online shopping has reached all new heights in China
with companies like taobao.com which oer innovave consumer protecon plans like 7 day
money back oer, seller guarantee, and 30-day warranty.
According to him, in the inevitable comparisons between the worlds two largest countries
and two fastest-growing economies, India usually ends up on the losing end. Indias econom-
ic growth has consistently trailed Chinas, andIndia hasnt eradicated poverty as quickly as
China, even when adjusng for the fact that India started its pro-growth reforms a dozen
years aer China. That has led to apotenally dangerous level of frustraon among Indias
poor.India has struggled to compete with China in large-scale, export-oriented manufactur-
ing but doesnt aract as much foreign investment as China. The fractured government in
India acts more slowly than Chinas to implement policy or build much-needed infrastructure.
So to emerge as a winner India has to think dierently and rely more on Innovaon.

And whats been happening with Karma Yoga?Im sure youve all been waing for an update on our great instuons USP, Karma Yoga. Well, the Karma
Yoga gang was busy during the week of the Venus Transit across the Sun.
The world was a huge ball then, the universe a might harmony of ellipses, everything moved mysteriously,
incalculable distances through the ether. We used to feel the awe of the distant stars upon us. All that led to
was the eighty-eight naval guns, ersatz, and the night air-raids over cies. A magnicent spectacle. Aer the

We had all heard that the posion of stars and planets change aer joining MBA College. Lile did we know
that they would change so fast.
On 6th
June 2012, we witnessed the transit of Venus. The transit
of Venus occurs when the planet passes directly between the
earth and the Sun so that when seen from the earth, the planet
appears to pass across the disk of the Sun. Simply put, a small
dot would be seen on the face of the sun. Historically this is the
7th such event since the invenon of the telescope, the rst wasrecorded in 1631 and the last in 2004. Venus Transit occurs in
periodic gaps of a set of years, that is, aer 2012 it will be occur
aer 105.5 years in the year 2117, then aer 8 years in 2125,
again aer 121.5 years in 2248, and again aer 8 years in 2256
and so on. This fact makes the Transit a one in lifeme oppor-
tunity for us lucky earthlings.
An Astronomy Workshop was organized at Thirukkazhukkundram
by Tamil Nadu Science Forum (TNSF) on 27th
May 2012 and about
40 of us got the opportunity to aend it. It was amazing to know
that how such a rare phenomenon could be witnessed using simple
apparatus. Equipped with all the requisite knowledge to set up a
simple apparatus to view the event, Karma Yogis from Great Lakes
were eager to have this event organized in all the nearby 20 villag-
es. The below experience is about the event organized in the vil-
lage Echankaranai by Namita Joshi and her team of 18 enthusiasts.

Prior to the event we had educated the school children, the
teachers and the youth of the village about the event using
posters and word of mouth. On D-day we arranged the set
up in the village school which happened to be the heart of
the village. The head master and school teachers were al-
ready awaing us. While one group amongst us headed to-
wards the classroom to explain the phenomenon with the
help of posters and You- Tube sessions the other was already
busy seng up the apparatus in the open. Eager studentswere viewing the video and the enre set up as if they were about to see some magic. Finally the apparatus
was set and now it was THE REAL me. The sun was projected on
the chart paper and the dark spot was almost on the edge as Ve-
nus was about to complete its transit. Not only the kids but we
all gasped with awe, the magnicent sun that had for some me
lost its might before the small but the then mighty Venus. We
bid adieu to our friend Venus for it now would be our morning
friend for the rest of our lives and next 105 years of its life. Prior
to this event Venus was an evening star.
I am not sure whether in the days to come we will be able to bring out the Einstein from the kids but I am
sure that TOGETER WE CAN AND WE WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE in smaller domains that can make a dier-
ence to at least a few lives.
