The Buildings of the World

• The following slide shows some of the world’s greatest buildings.

• The students of the 5th grade class worked hard researching, typing, and editing these reports and slides.

• We hope you enjoy them.

Great Buildings and Monuments There are many constructions and

monuments around the world.

One of them is the Parthenon and another is the Great Wall of China.

One building in India is the Taj Mahal.

Stonehenge was built to tell time

The Great Pyramid of Khufu was built as a tomb for the Pharaoh of Egypt.

Three United States buildings are the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and the U.S capital.

At one point the Eiffel Tower was one of the tallest buildings in the world.

Brooklyn Bridge

• The architects were John Augustus Roebling and his son Washington Augustus Roebling.

• The Brooklyn Bridge started on January 3, 1887.

• The day it was completed was May 24, 1883.

The Statueof Liberty

Built from 1884 to 1886.

Frederic- Auguste Bartholdi and Alexandre Gustave Eiffel were architects of the building.

A monumental statue and observation tower.

Located in Liberty Island, New York, U.S.

She was built to show how France and America both believed in freedom and opportunity.

The United States Capitol Building

• Started in September• Destroyed in 1814 during

the war of 1812• Finished in the year 1830• Took 37 long years• Used as a hospital for

injured soldiers• Cost $412,000• Architect is William

Thornton• Congress works inside• Designed by George

Washington

The Houses of Parliament

• Started in 1097 and finished in 1265.

• Used for the British Commons.• Rebuilt in the early 1800’s.• The style is perpendicular

gothic. • The second architect was Sir

Charles Barry. • Has been occupied since the

time of the Saxons.• Hit 14 times by bombs during

WWII.

The Great Wall of China

• Was built between the 5th century B.C. and 16th century A.D.

• Built for protection against intruders.

• Architects are unknown today.

• Over 3 million Chinese died.

The Great PyramidThe Great Pyramid was built 2600BC.

It was completed in 2480BC.

he Architect for the Pyramid is unknown.

There are many other pyramids in Egypt.

One of them is called Abu Rawash.

When the Pharaoh died they built a tomb for him.

They built a pyramid to put the tomb in.

It was known as the Great Pyramid of Khufu.

Stonehenge

• Unknown who built it.• Took 1000 years to

build it.• Created to tell time.• Its stones have been

stolen.• Was begun in 2800

B.C.• Completely finished in

1800 B.C.

Empire State Building• built in 1930 • completed in 1931• located in New York

City• 1,250 ft. tall• was the tallest

building in the world• deco building• built for jobs

The Munich Olympics

• It is 36 years old• Looks like a tent• Built in 1972• A lot of sports are

played there like golf, track, and swimming

Parthenon

• The Parthenon is an ancient Greek temple.

• The construction of the Parthenon took 15 years from 447 B.C to 432 B.C.

• The Parthenon have been around for a few of thousands of years.

• It was built to be a place to talk to there gods.

• It was caught in a fiery explosion in the 1600s.

• The Parthenon is surrounded by columns and inside there are 2 rooms.

• The Parthenon still is around today.

The Taj Mahal

• The building the Taj Mahal started in 1630 and it was finished 23 years later in 1653.

• It was used for a tomb for Emperor Shah Jahan and his queen, Mumtaz Mahal.

• It is located on the banks of the Yamuma River in Agra, India.

The Horyu-Ji temple

• The temple is over 1300 years old.

• It is the oldest wooden structure in Japan

• It takes more than 15 minutes on foot to get to the other side

• In the year 2,010 it will celebrate its 1,300 anniversary

Notre Dame du Haut• It was built by Le Corbusier in

1950.

• Located in Ronchamp, France.

• Completed as a church in 1954.

• Style of building is Expressionist Modern.

• Characteristics include scattered windows, many round curves, and slanted walls.

• Thousands of visitors come on feast days.

• It was dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
