Nights decreased slightly by -1% although spend increased by +10%. These findings suggest slightly shorter but more expensive trips taking place in January 2012, helped by a positive month for business trips which tend to be short but high in spend. • In volume and value terms, GB trips in January were at the highest level reported in the past 6 years: Jan 2012 (6.3m) compared to 2011 (6.0m), 2010 (5.4m), 2009 (5.6m), 2008 (6.1m), 2007 (5.8m). HEADLINE ANALYSIS: • January represented a fairly positive start to 2012 for GB tourism with trips increasing by +5% compared to January 2011. Nights
decreased slightly by -1% although spend increased by +10%. These findings suggest slightly shorter but more expensive trips
taking place in January 2012, helped by a positive month for business trips which tend to be short but high in spend.
• In volume and value terms, GB trips in January were at the highest level reported in the past 6 years: Jan 2012 (6.3m) compared to
2011 (6.0m), 2010 (5.4m), 2009 (5.6m), 2008 (6.1m), 2007 (5.8m). Please note that the latest 2012 results are provisional and subject to minor changes in subsequent months due to the inclusion of trip-takers returning from late trips. Pre-2012 results are based on full-year data so will not change.

HISTORIC PRICES HEADLINE ANALYSIS: • Holiday trips, nights and spend during the month reported increases on January 2011 of +15%, +21% and +28%,
respectively.
• As a result, GB holiday trips reported a very strong Jan 2012 (1.9m) when compared to previous years: 2011 (1.7m), 2010
(1.6m), 2009 (1.7m), 2008 (1.6m), 2007 (1.5m).

HISTORIC PRICES HEADLINE ANALYSIS: • Unlike holiday tourism, January 2012 saw decreases on the equivalent month in 2011 with trips, nights and spend decreasing by -
7%, -3% and -4%, respectively.
• Consequently, VFR trips in Britain in January 2012 (2.7m) were slightly lower than those reported in 2011 (2.9m) but at a higher
level than previous years with the exception of 2008: 2010 (2.5m), 2009 (2.6m), 2008 (2.8m) and 2007 (2.6m).

HISTORIC PRICES HEADLINE ANALYSIS: • Business trips in January have seen increases on 2011 in trips (+12%), nights (+19%) and spend (+8%)
• With the exception of 2007 and 2008 (1.5m, respectively) business trips in GB during January 2012 (1.4m) reported a strong
month when compared to 2009 and 2010 (1.1m, respectively) and 2011 (1.3m).
